and if you're here, aren't you one of those people?

Then you should probably either keep it to yourself, or just... not even venture into the hypothetical fandom, ever. Because people will pervert what you love. It's a law of nature. And a damn sexy one, at that.

Hey, maybe you'll luck out!

Maybe your book will suck, no one will read it, and you won't have any icky, shitty, or hideous fanfandom for it.

Publish your damn book and get over yourself.

Most books don't have big fandoms, though, unless they become super-famous.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Very very VERY few books get even a little fanart drawn for them, let alone "really popular". Even books that make the bestsellers lists rarely get ongoing, active fandoms. Even YA series.

So I wouldn't go counting your chickens just yet. I know it's kind of disappointing, it's so fun to think about hypothetical fandoms. :(

I don't feel like f!s represents the majority of any fanbase (could be wrong but that's just my opinion). If anything f!s serves as a "cross-section" of representatives of fandom and I don't think something like that should deter you from publishing a book.

And, sadly, aside from Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games (which the first two crossover into movie territory) how many book secrets do you see in comparison to anime, video game, and television series?

[identity profile] berseker.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everything gets a fandom.

That said, I don't get it... I would feel so happy if people cared enough about my stuff to have ships and theories and all. They say the authors shouldn't read the fics, but I totally would :)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Whenever I see a statement like this (Not always secrets, I've seen plenty of people state that openly as well), I think "Yeah...well, sorry to disappoint you, but your series probably won't ever get that big. Keep dreaming."

I wouldn't worry, OP. I doubt that you'll even get published, let alone a fandom. Books don't get fandoms, not like tv/anime/movies/whathaveyou do.

God, I hope I read this book so I can slash the ever-loving-fuck out of your characters in insanely twisted ways.

Of course, your assurances that it might be "popular" suggests it's probably dime-store trash anyway, so I probably won't...

Really depends on what genre you're writing, I think. Fantasy/supernatural books tend to get more active fandoms, but even those depend on how popular the book is. Unless you're writing a series that becomes insanely popular, I don't think you have to be concerned.

(Not related, but seriously captcha, I don't have a phi on my keyboard. What the hell is with these things?)

[identity profile] evilcheshirecat.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's part of my drive for finishing my book! I want a fandom. Even if it isn't popular, I get a kick out of thinking what everyone would do with it!

If I ever got popular enough to earn a fandom, I would be doing exactly as Zoidberg is

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you may as well not get it published, because in the case it does get famous, there will probably be badfic and stupid art about it. ;)

If fanfic has the power to meaningfully diminish the characters you say you've worked so hard on, your novel has more problems than the marginal possibility that someone might write porn about it.

I'm sorry, but there is a big chance your book is not going to be popular. Chances are it won't have a fandom. So I wouldn't worry too much about that. If it still bothers you, then I suggest you don't publish it.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? That's your number one worry? Then, my dear, you're in for a boatload of reality check, unless you already have an agent and a publisher lined up.

Here are the steps for your novel to get to what you fear most (if you're a first time writer - which you sound like - and don't have an aunt who's a well known agent/publisher):

Manuscript finished -> the gist sent as a query letter to agents -> query read by the agent (or the agent's secretary if the agent is a notable one) -> agent contacting you asking for the first 1/2/5 chapters -> agent contacting you again asking for the whole manuscript -> you and agent meeting and signing a contract -> agent shopping around for publisher -> publisher accepting manuscript, meeting with you and agent, signing contract -> book being published -> publisher able to negotiate shelf space for book at major book stores -> decent # of books being purchased and read by interested public -> people recommending the book through word of mouth and/or book getting popular through marketing -> fandom formation -> fandom getting big enough to merit bad fiction and cheesy porn.

Trust me, if you get to the point where people start to take your story apart you'd actually have so much success under your belt that you probably wouldn't care.

It doesn't matter whether anyone writes one drabble's worth of fanfic about your work, OP. As soon as someone other than you reads a single chapter out of your manuscript - and dozens of people will, your agent, your copy editor, your story editor, your typesetter, etc. - then your characters will be in someone else's head doing things that you never imagined them doing. You see, literary characters don't exist on the page; they exist in the imagination of the reader. And once they're there, they're made up of that dirty, filthy reader's thoughts and emotions and impulses, not yours. You no longer have any control over what they do and say once they're there; all you get is that one shot, on the page, to get as much of your concept of them across as you can.

After that, it's like an adult child leaving home - you just trust that you brought them up right and hope for the best, because there's no telling what they'll run into in a dozen other brains. And, like adult offspring, if you think they're not going to fuck out there, then you need to adjust your expectations.
