I think the OP was saying they didn't like the implication that men were the default model, which is why they choose to believe Aziraphale and Crowley are making an effort to be male.

I think the wording may cause people to misinterpret it, though.

Truly you are prescient, baby Draco.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you want to get technical, the default model is female. Male sex organs don't develop without prenatal exposure to androgens, even if the Y chromosome is present.

themoreyouknow.jpg

(Really, they were probably presenting as male because of male privilege.)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I was just coming over here to post pretty much exactly this same comment, almost verbatim. So thanks for saving me the trouble. Nerd highfive!

Good Omens does take place in a geocentric universe, so science might be a bit out of place in the reasoning!

Damn, I never thought of it that way before. I guess I'll share your headcanon, OP. :(

[identity profile] nota-lone.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
You worded this very confusingly. I can't tell if you think male should or shouldn't be the default.

In society, I think male is the default. Biologically, female is the default. Hence the profusion of nipples where unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people are having problems with this? I thought it was totally obvious that they think male should NOT be the default, but is considered so by society/the authors.

I never thought about this like that. Mostly because Crowley says at one point -when he thinks he has been shot by one of the managers- that he has to go through the infernal bureaucracy (heh) to get a new body, so I assumed that both -Angles and Demons- are bodyless unless they work on earth. Hell, doesn't Hastur or Ligur even mentioned that they are worried Crowley might became corrupted, because he had a body for 6000 years now?

[identity profile] unifilar.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Lol I feel like that's a really tiny detail compared to the overall messages that book has to offer? A lot of that book can't be taken seriously, too, so I guess I don't see why the OP is really into that ONE detail and taking it so seriously.

Psst...Good Omens doesn't dictate gender roles or perceptions in society.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
No, but Good Omens was written by two men who might be subconsciously buying into the societal assumption that being male is the human default, and women are the Other.

If what you're saying is that you think they're making an effort to be male instead the 'default' then I agree with you OP.

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're making an effort to at least appear male. Whether they actually have the parts or are built like Ken dolls under those fancy suits and tartan sweaters remains to be seen.

+1

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Popping in to say I agree with you...though I will take it further and say I'm uncomfortable thinking EITHER gender is the 'default'. I just assumed they both happened to have been assigned male-shaped bodies the last time they were incorporated, but that underneath they'd be ken dolls.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
This is a bad secret and you should feel bad

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Why? It seems pretty obvious the OP was unhappy with the idea that the "default" setting would be male.

JFC does no one teach reading comprehension in schools these days?

If they wanted to appear inconspicuous in human society they had to at least outwardly appear to be one or the other. Nothing says they hadn't switched it up a few times before. I just assumed they both happened to be portraying as male at that point and that "sexless" referred to a lack of the actual organs, which angels/demons don't need.

[identity profile] oxymoronic3.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I figured it was because both of them had been on Earth for a very long time it's way more convenient to be male in terms of the respect you're given and the opportunities that lend themselves to them. Of course, they're magic so they don't necessarily need that, but it probably made things easier.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 05:41 am (UTC)(link)

But when they are raising Warlock aren't one of them at least once female?

Don't have the book at hand so can't look it up.

Also, don't really know what I want to say with this argument (if it even is a argument) just thought I should throw it out there...

but this had nothing to do with whether they were male or female; this comes just after saying people assumed that aziraphale was gay. so in context, this is just saying that angels were devoid of sexuality - it really had no bearing at all on whether he was a man or a woman.

[identity profile] peeperoonie.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely it's more likely that taking on a male appearance, especially earlier in human history, made it easier for them to work within human society without running into the various and sundry roadblocks that a female appearance would have had them run into. Not male =/= default, but male = less hassle.
