Curses, reality!!

I know that feel OP, but it's best to just roll with it.

This.

Actually, a dislocated shoulder can be re-set fairly easily. I've dislocated mine twice and both times the MD just sort of shoved it back in there. You might need surgery for the surrounding tendons and ligaments so that it won't happen again, but popping the shoulder back in isn't all that difficult.

I know nothing about medicine and such, but dislocated limbs in fiction have always made me wonder. Like, it seems super far-fetched to me that you could actually just ram you shoulder against a wall and be a-okay. :?

Have you seen the website Polite Dissent? http://www.politedissent.com/

It examines House, Monster (manga), and various Western comic books for medical accuracy -- since I only really ever followed Monster, I enjoy the comic-based entries since the panels are scanned in for those.

At least as far as dislocated shoulders go, it really depends on the exact situation. As a kid, my sister used to dislocate her shoulder all the time. After about the third hospital trip, the doctor showed my mom how to pop it back in place. It was always the same shoulder, so we were told that manual relocation was an acceptable option.

I agree with you! I hate when the hero is beaten in his/her head and nothing happens, when they get shot and they just put a belt around their wounded arm or leg and keep fighting. It makes no sense, because I don't need movies to be realistic in other ways, but cartoon violence in serious movies makes me want to stop watching.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
This bothers me too even if I don't much at all about the subject. I really wish I knew where to research more about injuries and how they heal so I could write or draw them somewhat accurately. Outside of some used medical and anatomy books my sister let's me borrow, I have no clue where to find reliable online resources on this :(

Oh well. I'll still go on liking Berserk and most other action manga because damn they're intense, even if they're over the top and unrealistic.

If fiction were realistic then 99% of action stories would be a lot less interesting, because 99% of protagonists would be a lot more dead.

So. :T

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's true. A gunshot would be at least 2D6 DMG. While your average high-level protagonist might be able to shrug that off, a 1st level NPC? Only has one hit die to start with. And HP only regenerates at 1 HP an hour if it's been bandaged properly. That would take at least eight hours of sleep to heal.

Augh this. I can suspend my disbelief only so far before glaring medical inaccuracies throw me completely out of a story. That and when a show seems just completely clueless about how anything related to healthcare works, but maybe that's a separate issue. I tried watching Grey's Anatomy exactly once for about 5 minutes before I had to either change the channel or bust an aneurysm shouting at the TV.

[identity profile] getharion.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you remind me of my dad. He's a nurse, and whenever I watch a show with him that contains any sort of medical thing, he starts picking out every possible mistake they make in regards to health care.

...it gets especially funny/mortifying when it's a reality show.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I share this frustration, OP. especially with vague doctorspeak ("there's, uh, something wrong with your heart") and the way every sick or injured character will inevitably become pale and fatigued and cough a lot, no matter what the illness.

on the other hand, inaccurate depictions of mental hospitals are so prevalent that they make me lol. TV mental hospitals are like TV dorms. they're huge, well-lit, private and you can basically get away with anything.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm weird, it's only people walking off shoulder injuries (like a gunshot wound) that bother me. I can suspend belief for everything else like Lois Lane's 356th concussion

I agree, it's stupid and possibly even dangerous the way TV and movies make people think that serious injuries can just be walked off.

That said, you probably shouldn't "clenth" your fists.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
You can literally say this about any subject or field of study ever represented in fiction.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you don't watching The Glades. I've been watching it with my dad and there have been so many issues, although not necessarily medical. Really simple things, like the fact that St Petersburg is a lot more than "70 miles" from the Everglades. :/

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
While I don't mind this for a specific show, I just wish there are also fictional shows that have a more accurate portrait just so that there are more suspense on if they'd make it.

Not a fan of medical reality shows though. Too crass. Way too crass.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I have to give it due credit, for being a ridiculous, cartoony sitcom, Scrubs was actually surprisingly realistic when it came to the medical stuff.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-06-07 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way whenever a character talks "tech speak" or is "hacking" and it makes absolutely no sense. But I understand why it's done. Watching someone actually hack or talk technical would be BORING for people who don't understand it. It's also to speed up the process because you won't keep an audience if you dedicate 10 minutes of computer tech explanations. Same thing goes for fictional medical injuries.

But I agree, it is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much. I wouldn't mind it all that bad, except that it seems like all my fandoms will go on and on about the psychology or historical problems, while throwing off medical bloopers with 'meh, who cares?'

(Anonymous) 2011-06-07 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it depends, really. With action movies and the like, I go in with different expectations. Watching characters get beat up and go on long after they'd have DIED in real life is half the fun, IMO.

I don't really watch medical drama shows much, but I can generally ignore the inaccuracies because not being a professional, I don't usually catch them.

I do get blindsided at times, though. [AN OLD MENTALIST SPOILER] Like in Mentalist that detective whatshisname getting shot by the secretary who worked for Red John, and later dying in the hospital? I'm still completely baffled by that. I mean, he was in the hospital, awake and alert, and he died of... the after-effects of blood loss? What? What the fuck? What the fucking fuck? Dying on scene, fine. Dying on the way to the hospital, sure. Dying from infection in the hospital, okay. Dying from blood loss at the hospital, when you're out of surgery, awake, not bleeding...? >:(
