lol not related to CCS, and not quite as bad, but I just started a rewatch of SailorMoon/first time watching the entire subbed anime (I've read the manga), and in the original anime Mamoru is in college while the inner senshi are, of course, 14. so I'm spending a bunch of episodes going WTF MAMORU YOU'RE AN ADULT WHY ARE YOU DATING A 14 YEAR OLD?? BACK OFF CREEPER. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?? and when it's Rei it's not even justified by some kind of "deep down they know they're soulmates from a past life!" logic.

I had the exact same problem, anon. I actually thought their relationship was really sweet and adorable back when I read it the first time, and then...well, I got older and realized how fucked up that'd be (and how fucked up it'd make a kid).

And you know, I could almost let it squeak by if he wasn't her teacher. That's the ickiest part.

Oh god, the SAME thing happened to me.

My sister and I were cleaning out some old shit and we found our CCS manga in a box in the basement, so naturally we opened them up and began pointing out our favorite scenes. Then we got into a big discussion about the Rika/Terada thing and how sweet we thought it was when we were younger, and then we acted out this big Chris Hansen scene. I'm now 24, she's 21.

But yeah. That shit is Pedobear Approved.

This always makes me kind of sad... I read CCS when I was 10 so I thought their relationship was really sweet. Now that I'm much older it skeeves me out. A part of me is sad that I can't appreciate everything about CCS like I could when I was younger, but obviously I would be alarmed if I saw nothing wrong with their relationship.

I was always freaked out by that one scene in the final volume of the Cardcaptor Sakura manga where Sakura finds Rika alone in the park.
After Sakura leaves, Terada Sensei emerges from behind a fucking tree asking Rika "is she gone?".
Holy shit dude, you're actively hiding your relationship with your 10 year old student?
You know, because it's a crime and you shouldn't be doing it? Yeah...messed up.

Hahaha I feel terrible that it doesn't bother me. Maybe cause it's CLAMP and...well y'know CLAMP. I still think it's sweet and oddly innocent. If it was real life it would be gross and wrong, but it's not. It's shiny CCSland and somehow that makes it work for me.

as creepy as their relationship would be if it was real (seriously. no one should ever even begin to think about that shit), i don't think clamp meant for anyone to read into it beyond a fantasy context. they are known for their "love transcends all" theme, and this includes gender and age- in many cases it's taboo and/or tragic. love may transcend all, but it doesn't always conquer all or end happily. since it's fictional, it didn't "bother" me like it would have otherwise.

I always thought the relationship was supposed to be a purely escapist fantasy designed to appeal to the target audience of young Japanese schoolgirls. What young student HASN'T had a fantasy about kissing or marrying a teacher?
However, when you look back on these crushes, in retrospect, they will feel foolish, pervy, embarrasing, or amoral. Ugh.

There's a scene toward the end of the manga that squicked me out, where Rika meets him on a secret date. WTF were CLAMP thinking?? This manga was being read by young impressionable schoolgirls, and it's telling them it's OK to go meet your teacher for SECRET DATES because he totally just wants to go on picnics and hikes and stuff.
