I don't see the harm in it not existing at all then.

[identity profile] edmondia.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The books are amaaaaaaaaazing but not sure if want. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol are you a writer for the show or something? OP wasn't even really that rude, it's not like they called all the people who like the show mindless idiots. There are far more judemental secrets on here, I don't know why this is the one to get you so pissed

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. I will start respecting the sanctity of male bromance in media, just as soon as media starts believing that men and women can in fact be friends without inevitably pining for each other.

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The issue is why are you even watching the show, you have no desire to follow a person's set personality and characteristics if you want them to hump someone they wouldn't be attracted to. It's just new faces on the same two cocks.

I don't read it at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. Most beautiful summon ever.

[identity profile] chibifier.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Concerning that Not!Secret... I've actually read a fic in which Hermione convinced Snape to grow a little facial hair because she had seen Robin Hood and thought that way he would look like the Sherriff of Nottingham, the thought of which she found sexy...

[identity profile] emchelle.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Where were you earlier this week when I watched the entire pilot for "Once Upon a Time"? :-P

In truth, I was talking more about shows that are pretty not-stupid but personally a little boring, I'd like to check them out because people do have a lot of love for them, and yeah...a hot guy would make probably make things a lot more palatable.

I didn't say it was the most solid logic.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Here is the deal.

Name a few mainstream shows where the "Guys love lesbians!" trope is shown at least once. Even in family-friendly shows.

Now, can you name ONE where it's shown that women might like gay man action?

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in the same boat. In fact, OotP came out only a month and a half after my mother's death and I was very much the angry teen trying to cope. I picked fights with my dad relentlessly and acted like I hated him--and in a way, I did at that time.

Harry's actions were sensible to me and I never hated him for his attitude. Those who do, the vast majority of fans it seems, don't understand and what's even worse, they don't care to. Yes, Harry wasn't being the nicest, and his depression are not excuses or justifications for his treatment of his friends, but it's understandable and forgivable.

JK did a really wonderful job depicting trauma in a way most people tend to write off.

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's not so much a thing. Slash goggles refer to an inability or unwillingness to look at any close male friendship without assuming they're also lovers.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, I hate this animation style so much. Everything looks off and nobody moves right and things don't seem to have any weight when they're being held by the characters and and and...

It is so deeply in the uncanny valley I just can't deal.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a lovely secret :)

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I shame for the fame :U

I don't subscribe to either party tbh (fappers/REPRESENTATION AHOY), but the I SWEAR HE'S GAY IN CANON folks are just like.. 8| brain damaged.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
...since we're discussing Layton fandom already

...where is the fandom actually located? D:' Is there some internet forums or...? I've seen the LJ comm but it's hardly active ;__;

[identity profile] estellasharina.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't that into N'Sync back when they were the Big Thing - I'm born in the latter half of '88, so I didn't really listen to music until the very late 90's, and most of my favourite boybands were in what I usually think of as the second wave of boybands, formed in the early 00's (my absolute favourite for years was Blue). I love them now, though. :p

(I never really grew out of the boyband phase; listening to such music is one of my guilty pleasures, even if most of my peers think it's crappy music and something all of us ought to have left behind in 2002 :D)

OP HERE.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. Most of my friends like Supernatural so I get bombarded with it whenever I talk to them and whenever I am online. I want to like the show because what it's about is really cool (and because I could relate to my friends and immerse myself in a big, lively fandom) but I just can't get into it for some reason. And yes, every single person I have met who likes Supernatural (and it's a lot) are very attracted to one or both of them. That's why it feels like a big part of the show's ~allure~ is the "cute/hot guys".

[identity profile] elsewhere7.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think that was Quickclaw. Rhonda, the niece, is somewhere else in the game.

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...You mean that doesn't happen in real life?

:C

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Few words. Terse. Suggestive rather than descriptive.

On one side, the OP is right, the reader has to bring a lot of his or her own imagination to the experience. Some people enjoy this, because it makes the fic more interactive and because it covers a lot of ground in few words, it can be emotionally quite powerful.

However, sometimes a reader just doesn't want to work for their fic. They just want to sit back, read and have the story unfold vividly in front of their eyes. And there's nothing at all wrong with that.

And just as you can go so wordy that the story gets lost in the hunks of ponderous exposition, you can also go so barebones and sketchy that it becomes confusing and unsatisfying. I remember reading a story where I got to the end of it and I didn't know which characters were interacting or what precisely they were up to. That's not just minimalist, that's fail.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
A sign of a well written character is that anyone can relate to them.

And let's be honest, male character's tend to be written better than female character's. Because with female character a lot of times there's this emphasis on them being female, rather than just letting them be a person [that other people can relate to].

[identity profile] linndechir.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I think I do see your point. But for me attraction is also linked a lot to personality, so if a character in an otherwise not very interesting show is absolutely badass and fascinating and even attractive without necessarily being conventionally hot, that's enough for me. But I do have trouble with shows that may have interesting plots but absolutely no captivating characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Intended to be shortened" doesn't make it correct. Or even comprehensible.

You specifically said "you can't do that." Unless you're planning to fly around the world and personally smash the computer of every slash shipper on earth, yes we can. So no, it doesn't make sense.

Most of the time, I care about the characters' personalities. And yes, personality and sexuality are completely separate. Sexuality can even "change" for people over time, but I think that's a concept too advanced for someone like you. But sometimes, yes, all I want are hot people to fap to, and there's nothing wrong with that. I kinda pity you for thinking there is.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So, just listen to the music and don't watch the videos. I've only seen one full Lady Gaga video, and I actively sought it out (fwiw, it was "Bad Romance").
