I just read that whole thread and, uh. You do realize that slash isn't ALL ABOUT SEX OMG, right? just like het? or femslash? there's a lot of porn, granted, because it's fanfic, but most times it's just romantic relationships.

Also: if they are presented as straight in the show you cannot just assume OH THEY'RE BI TOO. No.

Well, yeah, you can. Because usually they're not portrayed as straight, they're portrayed as having an interest in the opposite sex. That means they can be either straight or bi, within canon. If it's never stated either way, both interpretations are valid.

Another question: do you also object to non-canon shipping? say, one character has a relationship with another character within the context of a show or book or movie, whatever. Do you think that shipping them with another character, whom canonically they never were shown as attracted to and/or interested in having a relationship with, is also 'OOC nonsense'? or do you just apply that judgement to sexuality?

Engh. You can make an argument that most forms of media can negatively impact social norms and behavior -- I'm not sure why sexual entertainment must always be singled out first. Personally I'm much more concerned about normalizing violence.

Nope, I heard that at mass every week for the first 16 years of my life that I was forced to attend. Just studying the Bible doesn't give you anywhere near an accurate picture of religion's attitude toward sex, because a lot of what's in the book (which is already misogynistic as hell) gets warped even moreso once it's filtered through a sermon.

I watch her videos once to see what it's all about and then that's it. They have little to do with her song and the weird factor isn't my cup of tea. I think the only video that I did enjoy was Paparazzi, but that was pretty toned down (compared to her others) and felt more like a story. I'm really not that big a fan of music videos anyways. Most of them are shit.

I think most of her music is catchy. I mean, it's club music, so I don't expect a whole lot from it either. Her voice is nice when it's not completely processed (I love her accapella versions). I do think she's a talented woman, but she's also incredibly over-rated.

Well this could've been serious but instead people went all outraged and stuff and most didn't really present any reason to justify taking straight chars and making them gay. Like I said, you're just wanting two actors' faces attached to dicks rubbing if that's the case and all you want for your porn so........ why are you bothering bruhs??

and of course it matters how could you think otherwise!!!!! it's not like none of us will ever see the face of whoever we're arguing here or anything..

I agree with all you've said, although I'm not sure how "minimalist" we're talking here, or what fics the OP has encountered that they're complaining about. As I've grown as a writer, I've found that less is often more, but I agree that it's not good to write so few words that you confuse your audience. On the other hand, I don't believe in "not making the reader work for their fic". I'm a person who reads between the lines and doesn't appreciate spoon-feeding, so I expect other people to as well. It's fine if others don't like that, but that's how I roll.

But part of being a writer is finding the balance between too much information and too little, and a lot of fanfic writers don't have enough experience to know how to do that.

There's a difference between shipping a pairing and writing/reading porn of it, though.

To preface: yes, plenty of people are in fandom solely for the porn, plenty of people only like to picture two characters they find hot in a romantic/sexual situation, and people are allowed to ship whatever kind of pairings they want for whatever reasons.

But "shipping" only really means liking a pairing - whether you like the pairing as it is in canon, or vaguely think the idea of it would be nice, or like it in G-rated romance fic, or find it hot and want porn of it - whatever.

And if the only pairings you ever like are m/m, whether in canon or in fic or whatever, in all your fandoms...well, I can't pretend that isn't kind of weird to me. It's your own prerogative and I try not to judge, but it still seems odd.

It's not really any different from someone who only ever likes male characters, with no/little exception. Sure, you can argue "strong" female characters are harder to come by than strong male characters. Sure, you may relate better to male characters than female ones most of the time for whatever reason. Sure, you have the right to like whatever the hell you want.

But when men, men, men is all you like or ever care about in any book/TV show/movie/whatever, I can see why that would raise some eyebrows (especially if you claim to be a huge feminist who likes strong female characters, and all that).

Oh well I heard something different at my church so...

I do have some issues with how Catholics have taken things and think they aren't quite right. The whole BC thing? Errr yeah might've missed the mark there.

But, Catholicism =/= the other denominations of Christianity by a long shot. P sure most of them just take the "don't have sex before marriage your virginity is a special thing to give to your spouse" standpoint which is more accurate.
