I take a problem with (only) shipping m/m when ALL OF YOUR PAIRINGS INVOLVE STRAIGHT MEN.

To me that just seems like you don't care a bit about the characters as you clearly have no interest in their canon identities, and yes, if they are presented as straight in the show you cannot just assume OH THEY'RE BI TOO. No.

Of course I take the same issue with f/f if the characters are straight. You can't just change their sexualities so you have something to fap to. Go find a show where the chars ARE homosexual/bi so you're not writing OOC nonsense.

1. There are not many shows with canonical queer characters, and they tend to just be the token gay guy/lesbian in a cast of straight people.

2. Very few characters who are 'presented as straight' actually have their sexuality explored in any detail. Unless they are queer, characters do not tend to have their sexuality directly stated in canon, because straight is assumed to be the default, so all characters are straight until proven otherwise.

3. Sexuality is fluid. Even if a character is only shown dating people of the opposite sex in canon, that doesn't mean they will never ever ever fall for someone of the same sex.

4. Shipping someone with a person of the same sex is not automatically OOC. I'm a gay women, I am occasionally attracted to men, and my personality does not become wildly different on the odd occasions I think 'oh hey, he's hot ^_^'.

5. I like non-canonical f/f and m/m pairings because I'm queer and the lack of queer representation in the media pisses me off and because I like to read about queer people, not because I want something to fap to.

1. There's a fair few on ABC (Family), Fox (lol Glee which supports the gay agenda in favor of bashing everything and one else), and that Degrassi or whatever. But all my shows have only straight chars so I can see that complaint!

2. Yeah but I'm talking about characters with explicit references to girlfriends/wives/that chick from last night I met in a bar oh dude she was so whack when I woke up. And the like. Where it's pretty much a given they are straight. If it's never stated one way or another well alright, fair game.

3. I think otherwise but I doubt we will agree on this point. I think they would never fall for someone outside their stated sexuality (unless it's for sweeps ratings bonuses LOL THIRTEEN lol House).

4. Well I'm straight and girls do nothing for me so eh, I think if it's a significant part of their character (their attitude towards the other gender) it can go OOC.

5. You seem to be one of the few so I can respect you want representation - most just seem to be all TWO DICKS SO HOT LOLZ and that's just.. come on 8|

What kind of shallow idiot watches a show just because it has gay (or straight) characters in it? If you write slash, you write it because you already like those particular characters, which leads to wanting porn of them. I don't get what's so hard about this.

I just read that whole thread and, uh. You do realize that slash isn't ALL ABOUT SEX OMG, right? just like het? or femslash? there's a lot of porn, granted, because it's fanfic, but most times it's just romantic relationships.

Well, yeah, you can. Because usually they're not portrayed as straight, they're portrayed as having an interest in the opposite sex. That means they can be either straight or bi, within canon. If it's never stated either way, both interpretations are valid.

Another question: do you also object to non-canon shipping? say, one character has a relationship with another character within the context of a show or book or movie, whatever. Do you think that shipping them with another character, whom canonically they never were shown as attracted to and/or interested in having a relationship with, is also 'OOC nonsense'? or do you just apply that judgement to sexuality?

OH GOD NO, NOT ~DEFILING THE STRAIGHT CHARACTERS. Cos straight isn't the default, media isn't homophobic, and sexuality is TOTALLY SET AND FLUID and if you ever end up hooking up with one single person of the opposite sex it means you are STRAIGHT FOREVERS and that will never, ever change, and it is totally impossible to fall for someone of the same sex. Ever.

(Trufax: I am someone who used to only be interested in guys. I am kind of completely in love / wanna spend my whole life / etc. with a girl. DID I TAKE MYSELF OUT OF CHARACTER?! I NEED TO KNOW THIS. OMG. AM I OOC?!)

Also, serious lulz at the idea that anyone only writes m/m or f/f involving characters "shown to be straight" (read: "not explicitly defined within the show/movie/book canon to not be straight because, shockgasp, media in general tends to be really homophobic and straight is the default") because they wanna fap to it. Dude(tte), I don't even write porn. I don't read it. I don't look at it or watch it. I enjoy relationships and dynamics and, yes, romance between characters who are not paired together in the canon! Some of them may even have had canonical romantic interests that imply they are straight/bi/pan/etc.! I really could not give one single fuck.

There really aren't all that many shows with homosexual/bi characters though. Sure, there are plenty, and some are interesting. Generally I am extremely bored by shows with a ~theme~ of homosexuality, if you will. If all femslash was Willow/Tara and whoever the characters of The L Word are, I think I'd shoot myself. I mean no offense to people who enjoy those shows/characters, but I'm just not interested.

Actually, there are very, very few shows and movies in which it is either explicitly stated or implied that a character is only heterosexual, if they're depicted in a heterosexual relationship. Considering the statistical presence of gay and bisexual people in the real general population, if you took all the fictional characters there are, subtract the percentage of ones presented as canon gay or bi, there are still a lot more NOT accounted for of what's left.

Go revel in your canon. Oh, and don't tell people downthread that you don't care what they write, because you clearly do, or you wouldn't have offered up your opinion, unsolicited, on this secret. :-)
