I have read a few fics which briefly or peripherally referred to this. Usually it's treated as though the character has a passing resemblance to the actor. This seems like a reasonable way to deal with it to me. I think it's kind of interesting to think about, from a pseudo-philosophical standpoint. In my opinion, because the character isn't the actor and visa versa, there is no reason whatsoever that they would exist in a universe without the other media their actors participate in. The character is an idea and thus exists totally independently of whomever plays them.

It's more interesting to me to think about fiction universes in which magic isn't hidden to the public, because they wouldn't have experienced any of the books and movies and tv shows with magic in them that we watch the same way, though they could have still existed. What would something like HP be viewed as in a society that thought of magic as mainstream?

For serious! I never would have DREAMED that two big-name people like that would care enough about Tintin to make such a big-budget movie about it.

That's Quickclaw down there, not Rhonda! Rhonda was lost somewhere else on the map.

Didn't you ever watch the cartoon? Jeeeeez!!! 9.9

Good description here, I thoroughly approve.

I find mixing it up works really well too. A fair amount of fics use minimalism to build to an end-line reveal, which if done well, can be wonderful. When I go minimalist, I tend towards using first person to disguise the identity of the narrator until the end. But if it's done poorly, you can end up with some serious crash-and-burns.

Isn't Sophie from HMC a late teenager in both the Miyazaki film and the original book?

By your logic anyone who hits the legal definition of adulthood in their country/world is automatically a mature, rational, emotionally capable person. He's still a teenager at seventeen, and I wasn't specific about age. He's a teenager from book three through book seven. Even when he's seventeen he is still a teenager. Are you telling me that every single person who is eighteen (in America), for example, is a mature, responsible adult, emotionally capable of handling a situation like the one Harry is faced with? Because I know plenty of adults who can barely handle their own lives, let alone the weight of the world.

Just because someone is legally classified as an adult, does not mean they are fully capable.

And you say "in the beginning", but in the beginning he is eleven. He was a child. Just because you come face to face with the person who killed your parents doesn't mean you are emotionally or rationally capable of thinking through and planning study sessions. The library was a place for studying for school, and when necessary breaking rules. He didn't know until the fifth book that it was completely up to him, and that was at the end. He has limited resources over summer and by the sixth book, he is learning what he can from Dumbledore. He wouldn't have found anything real on Horcruxes in the libraries of Hogwarts anyhow.

Your applying mature logic not only to a child but to an abused, neglected child. Yes, he is special, he is the hero, but that doesn't mean he's perfect. He's flawed, he makes mistakes. As a child, he was not expected to be the face of the war, and then by the time Voldemort does return, you have other complications like the lies being spread about Voldemort's return. Harry assumes it is more important for the truth to be revealed than for him to be on forefront of battle. Yes, he does tend to put himself out there in the midst of it, but he doesn't consciously plan to always be in the midst of it.

I think he did care enough. He did a lot to prepare, but he was still a child. A young child who could not possibly know everything that was going to happen. In GoF he practises his spells for a tournament that he had no idea had anything to do with Voldemort; in PoA he takes the initiative to learn the Patronus Charm which is advanced magic; in OotP through Hermione's help he teaches other students how to defend themselves. There is a lot of initiative on Harry's part, more than would be expected of any child at his age. Not everyone is going to respond the same to the things Harry experienced. Maybe someone else, like Hermione, would have looked up spells to practise but Harry isn't her. He's Harry. The actions one person might take are not the actions he might take.

Also, I don't think you understand what I mean by "action". I don't mean 'practise spells', which goes along with being studios in his world. I mean jumping into the fray without thought. I mean something present, that gets results fast. Instant action. He's good at DAtD but Harry isn't a patient person on the whole and looking up spells to practise would get boring.

For instance, even thought the TriWizard Tournement was a big deal and he was the youngest, Harry's initiative only stretched so far. I understand that as the person everything relies on, taking more initiative would have been smart, but that's not Harry. I'm not saying his actions were completely intelligent. They weren't thought out and that is the point. It's a character flaw of his that we see consistently which is attributed to his youth.

I know!! That's what I want to yell at people...if you're a fan of Tintin, SEE THE MOVIE! You may not like the animation style, but if this movie gets enough support that might mean we'll be seeing more Tintin-related things in the future. If the movie flops, Hollywood will assume no one gives a shit about him anymore. ): Which isn't true!

I can relate. My best friend loves Supernatural. It's her favourite show and she watches it religiously. We used to share all our shows and talk about them all the time, but I just can't get into SPN. I really would like to and on the outside it looks like something that would be right up my alley. There's just something about it that doesn't click with me. I don't find the characters that attractive, but then there are plenty of other shows I like where I feel the same way (like Doctor Who). For me, it's probably the writing and storylines. Maybe it's gotten better, but I can't be arsed to sit through that many seasons to find out. I just tell my friend that I can't get into it and hope she stops insisting how "good" it is.

I JUST NEED MORE RUNAWAYS ;___;

I'm not about to say that I've never read anything written in a minimalist style that I didn't enjoy, but on the whole, I agree with the OP. I don't think that minimalist writing versus 'normal' writing or whatever we're going to call it is about spoon-feeding or not spoon-feeding. A writer can go into a lot of complex detail without going easy on their readers. I don't like minimalism because I think it's almost totally impossible to do well enough to be good, and because most of the time, it seems to me like someone trying to come across a arty, pretentious and hipster and ending up somewhere in the land of wtf-did-i-just-read. The most successful pieces of writing I've read in the fic world and out of it briefly into minimalism when the time calls for it and not a moment sooner or later.

Or, you know, it was originally a book. So the characters wouldn't look like the actors in their universe so the movies can exist just fine. The only movies that wouldn't exist in their universe are the Harry Potter movies.

Sock Puppet. Honest Review. Go.

James is awesome. He's brilliantly talented, funny, and gorgeous in a way that's very different from your typical Hollywood stud.

Also, his MacBeth? A revelation. If you haven't seen it, I heartily recommend it.

Excellent choice in celeb crushes, anon!

[identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm usually very open to changes being made in adaptations, but so many of these were weird unnecessary changes. I still remember my best friend and I being "Why is her hair brown? It's red! 'Would you call it ginger,' he said!"

The animation was beautiful, but the story itself was a big old mess.

Yeah, I prefer tuna fin. Some people prefer dolphin's, or shark's. It's all okay, anon.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think many films almost depend on the audience's "hetero goggles" (i.e. assumption that the male lead and female lead will become a couple). Otherwise the romance in films (that aren't specifically about two people falling in love) would be much better plotted.

This is how I feel about Gaga. I understand that the gimmicks and outrageousness were a way of creating a career - she's a good singer with good music but so are thousands of others, and when she was recording under her real name she wasn't really successful. The freak show was a way of setting herself apart and creating an identity, and it worked. She's a big star now.

But she used to not take it seriously, at least that's my impression. She was having fun with it but didn't buy into her own hype. She does now. She's fallen down that rabbit hole completely and now she just looks ridiculous.

And since I'm talking about Gaga, I find it incredibly hypocritical of her to sing "Born that Way" with all of her body modifications.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's also a good point.

I infer that Op is probably a huge fan of Sartre.

*FACEPALMS* HOW DOES I SPELL?

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, seems to be what you're saying. But thanks for the troll comment, it really helped me cement my view of you as an idiotic, homophobic troll, which has lessened my upset at your ridiculous remarks some.

I make an exception for them. Be still my shipper heart!
