Sybil had a lot of potential as a character, but this series her character has been completely wasted in the stupid Sybil/Branson story line.

My ideal would be for Sybil and Branson to break up and Sybil can go travel the world on her own, and then meet someone who actually gives two fucks about her. (Instead of the laughable version of "love" Branson's got going.)

SPOILERS LAST EPISODE

I don't understand her. She wants to do more with her life, she says she's bored because she can't work and all that stuff. But she doesn't tell her parents that she wants to go to university, or help cousin Isabel or explore Africa or things like that. She wants to get married. What does getting married has to do with living a more useful life? Have Branson and her agreed that she's going to work? Doing what? I mean, I don't get why marrying Branson equals "I want my life to have a purpose".

Yeah, I'm not really involved in any of the romantic relationships on this show - most of the meaty "getting to know each other before falling in love" bits tend to happen off-screen. Sybil herself doesn't even seem all that into Branson, and I'd much rather see her as a woman's activist than in a somewhat lukewarm love story.

Remember when she turned up in front of her family wearing a pair of culottes? And then the episode ended and it never came up again? What happened to that story, because that's the one I kept tuning in for.

YES. That was the moment I decided I loved Sybil and we haven't seen nearly enough of THAT Sybil this season, if AT ALL. Sybil does not need a boring affair with the help to be interesting! It's just making her UNinteresting!

^this. All of this. As I read on tumblr earlier today, all Downton seems to do (especially this season, but it's always been there, really) is dangle interesting storylines in front of your face and then throw them away forever to focus on its "will they/won't day" romances. Annoying.

I had hopes for them (especially Sybil) actually because there was potential? But ugh I don't buy her attraction to him (never did, at least this in series) and he's such a Nice Guy and it's just gross and boring. Just give their screentime to Mary or something at least Michelle Dockery can act and make Mary's storyline compelling.

Although this series in general has been kind of a hot mess...

Michelle Dockery is AMAZING. She conveys so much with a simple inflection or expression.

Jessica Brown-Findlay is really not a good actress. I think the audience was supposed to feel like Sybil was conflicted, but that did NOT come across on screen.

You know I do like a love story that defies classes and customs, but I used to like them better when he was an Irish Socialist and she was an Activist and I thought they were going to be epic together and try to change the world politically. Now they're just boring. Plus if Mary can refuse to marry this or that person why can't Sybil just tell her family she wants to marry the chauffeur? I honestly don't see the difference between those two sisters' circumstances, and why Mary is so against it when she seems so progressive everywhere else.

Now excuse me while I go mourn William. I had a marathon tonight, saw half of season 1 and all of season 2 that's come out. And I loved William. :(

Well, I love Sybil/Branston, or I did until they decided the formula for their storyline was to take the same scene and play it over and over again once a week, rinse, lather, repeat.

But you know what? I still like them more than Lady Mary and Matthew, who I could not give a fuck about. I get that loads of people love them and are invested and what have you and I'm pleased for them, but I cannot fathom why anyone would care about that whiny entitled bitch and that boring-as-all-good-fuck milquetoast. He went to fight in the trenches and he's STILL BORING.

Um, rant over. Just wanted to say, you are not alone in having an unpopular opinion about Downton Abbey and things just got a bit out of hand.
