Oh, ew. That never even occurred to me until this secret. I think I like your headcanon better.

I honestly don't mind about the incest thing. They're lions. That's just how it works LOL.

It could happen. It's Disney, so why not?

Fandom for the most part seems incest tolerant these days anyway. From what I gather most people just either ignore it or freak out about it, and everyone assumes someone with the latter reaction just hasn't been in fandom long enough.

If I recall right, brothers will often share a pride.

(So maybe Scar fathered everything else huhuhuhuu.)

um they're fucking lions so the concept of incest doesn't really exist to them so i don't see what the big deal is anyway

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I was more bothered by how the movie made it clear (or at least heavily implied) that lions were monogamous and Simba was Mufasa's one and only cub. Er, that's not how lions are. But the incest thing never occurred to me. Hmmm.

I always sort of thought Nala's father was Scar, but only in the biological sense-- he wouldn't actually view her as "his" daughter, or might not have actually been aware he was the one who fathered her. I think the only reason I came to this conclusion is that Simba and Nala being cousins seems less squicky than half-siblings. The theory in this secret is a lot cuter though. Even if incest occurs among lions in reality, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it doesn't really work for a Disney movie.

Oh blech I can't believe this idea never occurred to me. I'm a total perv. I'm grossed out now. I guess I draw the line at overthinking anthropomorphic lion drama.

Good to know where the line is.

Because I'm a horrible person, my headcanon is that Nala's Da died, and Nala and her Mum moved to Mufasa's pride because Mufasa is chill like that. ;_;

Though, given that Nala and Simba are betrothed (yes? Or I'm I hallucinating), one could make the argument that in Disney! The Lion King land, Nala is the daughter of a far off Pride, and she's moved with her mother to the Pride Lands to meet her fiance so they can become friends before marriage and I am way over thinking this. >_>

Plus this is far to much like The Swan Princess... O_o

As Nala and Sarafina are the only ones in the pride without red eyes, I always assumed something terrible happened to Sarafina's old pride and she was found in the Pride Lands, heavily pregnant, so they took her in. And then her and Sarabi became really great friends.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, animal kingdom rules should never be applied to cartoons. It messes a lot of things up. I remember when I was a kid I used to watch a cartoon about honey bees. I couldn't help shake the feeling that everything that happened in the story was incest since all bees are essentially the queen's offspring.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm probably going to get shit for this but I have to wonder how hard somebody is looking for incest to get squicked by if this bothers them...Nala and Simba apparently weren't raised to think of each other as brother and sister and there isn't a risk of mutation, so, what's the problem? IDK, it's like most conversations about incest make me wonder if people are against incest for the very logical reasons that exist to disapprove of it or because they just have shallow knee-jerk responses to the taboo of it.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's how we all think until told otherwise. It's like finding out that Santa Claus is your parents.

Actual animal behavior shouldn't be applied to Disney, and especially not to the Lion King. I mean, none of the animals act in a realistic fashion, which is pretty obvious from the opening scene when all of the animals that are prey to lions bow to Simba and Mufasa. And it's implied that Simba would learn from Mufasa until Mufasa died and Simba took over... when in real life, of course, Simba would either kill or drive off Mufasa or Mufasa would kick him out to go find his own pride.

Also, you know, hyenas obeying evil lions (HAHA what), meerkats and warthogs being friends and raising a lion cub... come on, now.

I do think it's interesting for fandom exploration, but you definitely can't really claim it's canon for the movie itself.

Although I did just rewatch the film the other night and found it interesting that Nala was referred to by Zazu as Simba's "betrothed". What would be the rules for getting betrothed in Lion King-world, aside from your parents apparently make the decision for you when you're very young? I think what other people commented about Nala looking like she comes from another pride might have some merit, and perhaps the tradition includes choosing a young female cub (and her mother) from another pride to expand theirs under the inevitable reign of the king's son. Or something. Not sure how it would happen with a female cub, except that with Kiara apparently what happened is she just brought Kovu into Simba's pride to be his son-in-law (which means the girl cubs don't go through the betrothal tradition? Only the boys? ...Why am I thinking so hard about this.) But then again, that was a case of the two prides entirely merging (and also realistically inaccurate as no way would Simba allow another adult male into HIS pride, were this real life).

I always assumed Nala and her Mom lived near by or whatever. I never assumed Mufasa was father to all the cubs like in real life. o_o

[identity profile] insertsparkles.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lion King is a movie about lions (and other animals) that can sing and speak. It will never stop baffling me when people try and apply real life lion logic to this movie.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, the lions in The Lion King are already so far removed from what a real lion pride is like that I think it's completely okay to further personify them and make up whatever fluffy headcanon you want. They've already crossed the line from reality to fantasy, no question.

OT

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Why all the Lion King secrets lately? I kind of like it, except that it keeps making me want to rewatch the movie.

Let us not forget also that this is basically Disney's take on Hamlet.

You remember Hamlet, right? We should all just be glad that Nala didn't kill herself.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Don't most male lions roam around "stag" and prideless? Either as young studs who grew out of their pride/aren't yet old enough to challenge one in his prime or too old and now chased away by another adult male? Meaning, the females and the cubs live in prides and the male just kinda wander around mating randomly?

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lawl. What about Lion King 2? Do you believe them when they say that Kovu was hand-picked by Scar, but not his son? Or are you willing to concede that this was a lie they thought of after they realized their characters were second cousins or whatever the term is? ... Or do you have no opinion due to lack of interest in that movie? XD

Far as I'm concerned, yes, Simba and Nala were pretty much guaranteed to be half-siblings. But that's... kinda normal for lions, isn't it? As long as they're lions, I don't mind if they ARE LIONS.
