Superhero comics are like any other genre - they have a range of quality and depth.

So the superhero genre isn't your thing, which is cool. BUT you do realize there are more to comic books then just superheroes right?

Don't dismiss all comics just because you can't see past your own nose.

a) You're judging something without reading it, so your opinion counts for squat.

b) You're wrong about comics not containing depth and variety.

c) Some comics have kid-friendly versions, which are significantly different from the psychologically complex storylines enjoyed by teen and adult fans.

Comics aren't only about superheroes. I don't understand why you're being so dismissive when you acknowledge that there are good comics that are online for free.

Also, I'm curious: was 'fanties' an honest typo or some odd way of shortening 'fantasies'?

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The level of depth depends on the writer.

Not all comics are superhero comics. See: Alias and Fables.

It's fine that you don't like comics, but you sound like an ass. Still, I will admit, you're right on the names. Batman and Superman sound awfully silly.

What's wrong with things just being fun? There are superhero comics out there with depth, but there is also a lot of cheesy stuff out there, and if people enjoy it I don't see the problem. There is tacky, mindless material in all types of media.

Also, seconding that idea that not all comic books are superhero comics, though you mention liking web comics so you might already know that, and aren't including things like indie comics, graphic novels, or manga in "comic books".

Whoops, clicked the wrong button.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think comics (and by extension movies based on comics) are about the dumbest thing in the world, but that's just my opinion based on my personal preferences. I don't think it's fair to judge others for liking something just because you don't see what they see in it. Lighten up, OP.

Your reasoning for disliking superheroes makes it seem like you wouldn't like any fantasy and/or sci-fi stories, be they in comic book, film, tv, book or any other medium. If you dislike superhero characters because they have something 'other' about them, then I'm guessing you dislike aliens, vampires, witches, werewolves, and any other characters from a setting other than present day Earth. In which case, why focus your secret on superheroes, rather than fantasy and sci-fi as a whole?

Actually, I'm not sure why I'm even asking hypothetical questions here, because you have to be a troll. While there's nothing wrong with disliking a particular medium, declaring that medium a waste of paper and money simply because you don't like it is jaw-droppingly arrogant. I wouldn't declare a film or book I disliked a waste of time or money or ink or paper, especially if it was something popular enough to endure decades of publication, meaning there are plenty of people who do like it.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I really hope you don't consider anything like Gilgamesh, or the Greek and Roman myths worthwhile literature than either, because really, what's so interesting about a bunch of superpowered gods running about... oh, wait...

Sooo... what about the people who read worthy things (in your eyes) AND comic books?

People find depth in almost everything - that's because any piece of writing will have bits and pieces that can be delved deeper into, turned on its head, torn apart until nothing is left but years of meta. Even more in comics, because things are so constantly changing.

/way too srs a response for what may be a troll

My Mum never liked comics.

I tried really hard to get her to read Maus, which I think she would have enjoyed, but, as she put it, first she has to look a the panel and see what's going on, and then she has to read the text, by which time she's forgotten what's happening in the panel, so then she looks at the panel again, by which time she'd forgotten what the text was. Rinse and repeat for each panel. When her eyesight went bad it only made things worse.

She had always said she didn't have the patience for them, which I thought was dismissive and unfairly dismissing an entire medium based on gods knew what lame reasons. Once she explained that it actually was difficult for her to connect the pictures to the text in a coherent manner, then her "I don't have the patience" made more sense.

So I consider my Mum to have had a legitimate reason for not enjoying comics of any kind in any form.

But I'm afraid that when you generalize to say ALL comics are like this or like that, or that none of them do this or that thing, then never mind me whining about comics being an art form; I think you're simply dismissing an entire medium because one or two genres within it don't appeal. Because it certainly sounds as though the subtext of your secret is is that you don't like the super-hero genre.

Let me ask you a question: What do you think of super-hero movies? They've been around forever and there's been a tonne in the past, oh, ten years or so, of really quite a consistently high quality. So I'm curious, do you have the same reactions to these movies as you do towards the comics? Because if you find that the movie versions of these characters are engaging and have emotional depth but the comics do not, then I would suggest you take a look at some different genres in comics. And if you do have the same reactions to the movies as to the comics, then I figure it's safe to say that you simply don't enjoy super-heroes.

But please don't dismiss an entire medium based on your perceptions of one genre.
