lol oh.....

...But isn't that relationship liked because it's fucked up but written better?

Even then, Edward is manipulative and abusive. That it's glorified and made to seem like it's okay is bad.

[identity profile] thesaneminority.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
If it was written by someone with more talent, then Edward's abusive behavior and Bella's unhealthy dependence on him might actually be portrayed as bad things. (Actually, I like to think that a better writer would have ended the series at New Moon, with Bella either ending up with a non-wolf Jacob or, better yet, learning that she can in fact live a fulfilling life without Edward.)

I also didn't like Angel/Buffy, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I can't stand Angel unless Buffy's not around.

I guess it *could* have been the next Angel and Buffy if it was written better...But that's a huge if. When Buffy thought Angel was dead, she didn't try to kill herself. She grieved for a while, and then she moved on with the business of kicking ass and being a BIG DAMN HERO. As a matter of fact, Buffy sacrificed Angel to save the world because it was the right thing to do (he was the one who was trying to end the world). Bella is the anti-Buffy, they are NOTHING alike.

People tend to hate it because it's written like shit

There was a secret a lot like this not too long ago. Huh. How interesting.

In any case, yeah, the problem is this relationship is portrayed as a romantic ideal. I did like how in the first movie, Edward was portrayed as being rather unstable. Made me think if he was the antagonist in the series, it would have been far more interesting.

Edward and Bella's relationship had a lot of problems, but worse than any of the problems was the fact that their actions were almost always presented as justified or understandable because they were in perfect true love. If Bella or Edward had come to realize that killing themselves because they couldn't be together wasn't a great idea, a lot of problems could have been avoided...instead we're given "Well, if the most perfect person in the world loved you and then left you, wouldn't you curl into a little ball and refuse to see the light of day again?" I know those aren't Meyer's exact words, but the general idea was that he's so wonderful that Bella's actions after he left were understandable. It all just stems from bad writing.

I think a lot of the concepts in Twilight had the potential to be good had they been in the hands of a capable writer. One in particular that I liked was the idea that the vampire was frozen at the time of his turning and thus spoke like they were from a different time. I thought it was a neat idea, but sadly none of the vampires actually spoke in old timey lingo...they just occasionally used big or odd words (Edward saying, "Bella, you're so obtuse!" comes to mind...). There's more things that I thought could have been really good had they been written well, and it shows that Stephenie Meyer is at least creative and good at coming up with interesting ideas for stories and characters.

Except sparkling vampires. There's no way that idea could be any better no matter who was writing it.

Lol no.

It could've never been the next Angel/Buffy because Bella isn't a feminist character by any stretch of imagination. Not only that, but there's the whole aspect of Angel/Buffy being an equal relationship -- Buffy is a slayer who can (and does) kick Angel's ass when she needs to. Bella is a walking bait, a free snack to munch on for every vampire that sees her. She needs others to define her existence, her self-worth. She's a fucking parasite. Angel's a force of nature. Edward's a century old virgin who suffered from a middle age crisis and solved it by attending a high school.

So, bitch, please, DO NOT EVEN.

Ehhhh, look, no matter who wrote these stories, a person who completely falls apart because the guy she's been dating for a couple of months at most leaves her is not going to come out looking like a healthy person. I give some leeway to some of the other squickier relationship aspects because I don't think Stephenie Meyer really realizes how certain things came across, but Bella's dependence on him and the fact that she never learns better is just disturbing to me, and not romantic in the least.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen much of Buffy growing up (I was 14 when it premiered) but from what I remember that relationship didn't work? I think that if it were in the hands of a better author she'd be consistent with the character development (like initially Bella couldn't stand the sight of blood but in the last book, oh wait I forgot I like blood) and the like.

Also, if Bella stood up for herself maybe Edward would respect her more and they could have an actual conversation and get to know one another. But no, he doesn't and won't.

Granted, the movie does it better at showing that they have a decent relationship (they stay up talking, laughing, bonding), so I give the first movie credit for that.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight is terrible because the shitty relationship between Edward and Bella is supposed to be a representation of "troo luv". If the series had actually acknowledged how fucked up their relationship is it MIGHT have been interesting. The Nostalgia Critic said "In another time, Bella could have been a great Shakespeare villain." I agree with him. As for Buffy and Angel, I don't remember much, but their relationship didn't work out in the end, and Bella and Edward's definitely shouldn't have either.

Yes if Twilight had been written by someone with more talent (and less delusion) then the story would've admitted how fucked up their relationship was (like Buffy/Angel did) and it would've been a study of where such a messed up relationship would lead as opposed to presenting it as OMG TRU WUV!!!

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if someone rewrote them till they were entirely new characters, then they'd be okay for each other.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I didn't like Buffy/Angel either, so that comparison means nothing to me.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
If the characters, plot, and lore were completely rewritten? Sure.

No, it is as bad as people make it out to be. I mean, seriously, how could a relationship where a guy forbids you to see friends he dislikes, dismantles your car to prevent you from going places, disregard all of your opinions because he feels it's in your "best interest", and even goes as far as to blackmail you into marrying him not a bad relationship?

I don't get the Buffy/Angel and Bella/Edward comparison at all, to be honest. Could someone please explain that to me? 'Cause I'm not seeing it.

Reposted for typos.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
..Actually, I hate their relationship because after she meets him, she stops participating in extracurricular activities that don't have to do with him, immediately loses interest in having other friends, and is willing to give up her career, future, friends, and family to be with him. I hate their relationship because her boyfriend is a dead guy who starts watching her sleep after they've known each other for three weeks, slashes her tires to prevent her from going to meet her male friends, and threatens to kill any men who are attracted to her in a sexual way - and this is propagandized as appropriate, sexy, cute, romantic, and the ideal relationship if you're really in love with your spouse.

It has nothing to do with her writing style and everything to do with her portrayal of their relationship as safe, normal, and romantic.

[identity profile] lydzi.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I don't understand how people can like Angel/Buffy either.... but I guess I have a problem with the all concept of vampires and love etc.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
deja vu on the whole fucking E/B and B/A argument. Shitty writing or not, they were both approached really differently.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about being the next Buffy/Angel as I don't see any similarities aside from the fact it's a vampire/human relationship. I do agree that it could've been better if it was written better and by that I mean not from Bella's viewpoint. The whole reason it's seen as ideal and romanticizing is because the reader sees everything through her eyes. She's a naive lovesick teen girl, so of course she thinks this relationship she has with a sexy vampire boy is ideal. I would've liked more than just her viewpoint.

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who didn't really care for Buffy, I must say this: LOL NO. There is no basis for comparison here. You fail to win cool points, OP.
