...Traitors to homosexuality? That's new. Every other part of this secret is the same vitrol that we've heard before, but that's new. You get a point for originality.

There should be a "Painfully Obvious" section on the failbar.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
They also include every country that has ever legalized homosexuality, fought for it, demanded it, and worked hard to ensure that homosexuals get fair rights. Let's see, homosexual acts are legal in Canada, the U.S., China (Hong Kong, People's Republic, and Republic of), Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, the U.K., Belgium, France, Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Switzerland, Belarus, Russia, and Ukarine. These are all key players in Hetalia.

WWII contained many horrific acts on all sides, but it's over. Hetalia doesn't glorify that; it just uses the war as a starting point. Most of the recent work has nothing to do with WWII, and the arguments that you and others spout indicates a complete lack of familiarity with canon.

It's been said before and it's being said again - the characters are merely stereotyped personifications and are not symbolic of any political movement. They're there for jokes about the relationships between countries and general odd historical and cultural facts. Where there have been allusions to serious events, it's been strongly hinted that the countries don't necessarily agree with all dictatorships and politics they've been subject to. At points they've seemed incredibly uncomfortable with it. So no, the characters of Hetalia don't immediately hate gay people because of their history.

Secondly, any history of oppression renders a country homophobic forever? Many of the countries featured in Hetalia have also made positive contributions towards gay rights and equality - Denmark, Sweden and the rest of Scandanavia, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and, yes, Germany too. Hell, there's been plenty of strong hinting that certainly Germany and Sweden are attracted to men. Frankly the argument that the presence of a history of oppression means the /characters/ are fixed in their homophobic views makes no damn sense.

I think the most important thing that people miss is that these characters do not represent any politics at all. If they did, they would be impossible to sympathise with. Instead, they're meant to be taken as they are - strange bickering characters caught up in the odd situations history throws at them. Being honest, Hetalia made me uncomfortable until I realised that - as it is now, the comic is mostly silly, innocent and random jokes poked towards countries. If enjoying that sort of humour makes me some kind of 'traitor' then I'll strongly disagree ... but mostly I'm reeeeally hoping you're a troll.

So I see Hetalia added an Australia. How does the ?manga?anime? work people? Can I grab just Australia's stories, or should I just read from the point onwards where Australia joins?

I'm just curious about Australia!person, but who knows. Maybe I'll like this show/manga/I'm really not sure what it is.

Are you COMPLETELY BRAINDEAD.

It is a CHILDREN'S. FUCKING. SHOW.

You and everyone else who rage against Hetalia pretty much pile into the 'same stupid fuck who actually knows nothing but RAAAAGES anyway'

It's a children's show. It covers history but it does it in a way that is kid friendly. For fuck's sake.

All countries have, at one point or another, persecuted sexual minorities. Liking said countries, in a fictional context or not, doesn't make one a traitor.

I hate Hetalia but this shit is seriously getting old. Can't we get a secret about the show or the comic itself being crap outside of the endless "IT'S SOOOO OFFENSIVE" secrets for a change?

How much do you guys want to bet "traitor to homosexuality" is going to become the new "OMG NO GAY GUYS ACT LIKE THIS BECAUSE I AM THE AUTHORITY ON ALL HOMOSEXUALS EVER"?

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, while I've seen the Oppression Olympics play out countless times on the internet, this has got to be the first time I've ever witnessed an event in the Genocide Olympics.

Which was objectively worse, the murder of millions of Native Americans through biological warfare, the state-enforced starvation of millions of Chinese, or the execution of millions of Jews?

TELL ME, INTERNET! Who wins?! And can I not wear the symbols of second and third place, or does the winner take all and the emblems of all other states that sponsored genocide throughout history are A-OK?

Okay, so I'm not sure how to tackle this secret. On the one hand, I don't like Hetalia at all. Have never had an interest in it aside from the winter Olympics and wanted to see if there were any cute pictures of Canada, but stopped after only an hour of browsing. The show's humour does not appeal to me (from what I've seen of it), and I know i'd be the type to get offended by it.

However, saying that someone is being a TRAITOR to homosexuality for watching it is just... weird is the only word that comes to mind. If a person, man or woman, gay or straight, wants to enjoy a series and not give a shit about how dumb it is or how it glosses over history, that's their business. They don't have to be an activist over everything because they want to be a person instead of being a certain gender or sexual minority. Saying a homosexual must hate the show as much as you because they're a homosexual is treating them differently based on something that shouldn't matter, and that, dear anon, is being just as bad as how you think the show is.
