Number 14 should have a trigger warning for abortion.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh lord.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
ia tbh

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Is abortion a trigger? I'm just asking because I haven't seen it before. I thought triggers meant things that would set off a certain, dangerous or self-harming behavior.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be, yeah.

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I admit to using the TW a bit lightly. A more accurate term would just be "warning". On the other hand, that is how TW has come to be used in fandom. People use it to warn for all sorts of content.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
By which she means increasingly dumb things.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. You should definitely warn in case some emo teen sees something that could trigger their oh-so-important impulses to self-harm but it's ridiculous to warn for a topic many find sensitive. /fuckingsarcasm

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sensitive because they've gone through an abortion or because they are pro-life?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Abortion is a sensitive subject for a lot of people and for a number of reasons both the procedure and the discussion thereof can bring back really bad memories. That's generally what a trigger is; I think instead of assuming people who are triggered by this kind of talk are just overreacting pro-lifers, we should take triggers seriously and respect the people who are affected by them. Your comment is really dismissive.

What?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that was uncalled for.

It makes no sense to try and shelter people (like me) who are against abortion from the fact that it exists... and then turn around and imply that people who struggle with self-harm are just being special snowflakes and need to suck it up. >.>

I agree that it makes sense to warn for abortion since for some, it could trigger some, for people who were forced into one or something. However, that doesn't make other trigger warnings less valid.

that is how TW has come to be used in fandom. People use it to warn for all sorts of content.

And that's part of the problem. It gives more ammo to the people who don't take triggers seriously, when people doing the actual warning confuse "trigger" with "things people are uncomfortable discussing."

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
What part of "abortion can be an actual trigger" are you dismissive assholes not getting?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything CAN be a trigger to specific people. Is abortion a commonly triggering thing?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a very sensitive and deeply personal issue that a lot of people get extremely passionate about on both sides of the debate, so I'd say putting a trigger warning on it would be justified.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
But does it actually, seriously trigger you into PTSD flashbacks? If it doesn't, then you're just watering down the idea of trigger warnings until they get harder and harder to take seriously.

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, I already said upthread that I should have said "regular warning" instead of TW. That was my fault. I agree that the concept of TW has been watered down in fandom, but it's still a good idea to warn for content. I don't think that, say, talking about drug use is triggering for anyone, bit I still think it's something that should be warned for. I wouldn't use a TW though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Yes, that was my issue with your first comment.

But... if abortion is, as you say, not a common trigger, should it be warned for? How about gore or violence? Why not things like death in general, illness in general, *isms in general, and so forth? Should religion be warned for? They are all sensitive topics.

Warnings for "controversial material" on this comm would mean a warning on everything. :\

DA

I don't think that, say, talking about drug use is triggering for anyone

From what I've heard, it can be, because it can trigger a relapse in some people.

lol now I'm gonna demand a trigger warning for every single potentially upsetting thing.

Dreamwidth is that way *points*

tv tropes, is that way *points different direction*, the warriors for Gr8 Soshal Justish can wander off to whichever of the cotton wool wrapped conformist paradises they want.
