Weird. For all the SJ-talk about cultural appropriation stuff, I've only ever heard this kind of overzealous use of 'fetishization' from people who are either fairly indifferent to social justice or in actively in the "fuck the PC police I can use slurs if I want to" crowd.

I don't know how old you are, but a friend of mine learned ASL at a local high school for the deaf and was asked to help chaperone a few of the dances, etc. Take a class! You'll find opportunities to use it if you're involved in that community.

So many secrets I can relate to.

I just realized something: the second type of person is [livejournal.com profile] theo_harrison in a nut shell. That explains why I can't stand him.

Icon directed not at you. It's directed toward language bullies and mockers. I only speak English, trying to learn Spanish, but inhibited by my memories of language bullies and mockers, esp. my high school French teacher.

My biggest regret from h.s. is not turning her in for her bullying ways. 2nd day of French I, she asked me if I was deaf b/c I wasn't saying the words right and it went down from there.

Adults esp. shouldn't make fun of teenagers trying to learn another language. I admire others who do speak another language and I want to be one of them but I don't know if I ever will....those memories affect me even now since I expect Spanish native speakers to jump down my throat for not saying it. I can't even bring myself to try to speak the language to even my Spanish speaking next door neighbor (I get very anxious, almost panic attack-y thinking about it), who is very nice so far although I don't mind being corrected about my pronunciation, grammar (my Spanish teachers so far are very nice this way although a couple of the native students not so much), whatever as long as it done nicely, ie. not mocking me for it.

I'm feeling a lot like this myself. The RP is over, in my case, and while earlier in it I felt like I was connecting better with the other player, lately there's been virtually nothing, and it makes me sad, because while I don't expect bffs or anything, I thought maybe there'd be at least something more of a friendship there, and I genuinely don't know what changed.

Don't mind me; I'm still having trouble with the concept that anyone born in the '90s is old enough to buy cigarettes.

I don't advocate trusting anyone or anything blindly, particularly in the often-fuzzy mental health area. I'm sorry you got jerked around so much by the field--it's a shitty position to be in, and it sounds frustrating. However, I am sure of my own diagnosis through research of my own as well, and because of the fact I have two living blood relatives on the same spectrum, one of whom is my mother.

The correct diagnosis does give relief though. All I was really saying.

^ This.

Nope. Even true albinos typically have pale eyes, but not red. Depends on the person's genotype and what kind of albinism they exhibit (OCA1-4 vs. OA).

All the people with white hair in that picture have dark skin along with white hair, though. Which is not really consistent with albinism at all. If you're missing enough melanin to turn your hair white, your skin isn't going to look like you just stepped off a tanning bed.

What, they use words like "bitch" on Simpsons now? Glad I stopped watching a few seasons ago.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. People shouldn't feel like they have to hide it because some people use it as an excuse for bad behavior.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Add [livejournal.com profile] blackjackrocket to that list, too.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I've seen drawings of the kids as black, but they never "ghetto'd" them up or anything. I'll take your word on it and not delve any further. :\

Question - do you hear any mention of "I have autism" or another mental disorder as automatically meaning "pay attention to me and treat me special" or does the person actually have to say that for you to get pissed off at them?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. It always baffles me when people say, "Don't use that word! It's sexist!" ...Except the word itself is meant to be offensive no matter which way you use it, so what's the point? So "bitch" isn't acceptable in polite conversation, but "fucker" and "asshole" are? Isn't that like saying, "Don't take a dump on your boss's shoes, but it's okay to do it in their office"?

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, scheduling is lame. But you can do it! I ~believe~ in you!

It says "CURRENTLY RECRUITING JAPANESE GIRLFRIENDS", and seems to be awkwardly approaching a random female Asian pedestrian, sooo...

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
don't know them. deets?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
ITA about the show. I checked out the pilot on Netflix last week expecting a few lulz, and ended up devouring all 10 episodes in a couple of days. Now I'm desperate to see the current episodes but don't have cable, so I'll have to wait. The acting is shockingly good for this type of show, and I'm already attached to the characters.

I'm pretty sure you can delete comments here. But the moment of "how does race factor into this" was kinda amusing.
