I haven't been keeping up with the Simpsons, but

• Feathers woven in to hair is a fad right now. It's true that it's a bit insensitive, but it's not full-out racist.

• The word "bitch" isn't sexist. I know it's a negative connotation with an original definition that vaguely has to do with females (specifically female dogs, which I would like to point out, isn't the same thing as a female human, females of certain species, like dogs and cats, have a tendency to be more territorial and rude to other members of their species than the males, or at least have been observed that way. Calling someone a "dog" has also been an insult, too, it's just not as common)

• I fail to see what the problem with drug use is. It's a thing that actually happens.

• Just because these things are in an episode of the simpsons doesn't mean that it's becoming more like family guy, because the writing styles are still COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, the jokes in family guy are never, never relevant to the plots, which are half-baked anyway. South Park has racist and sexist dialogue, along with drug use, that doesn't mean that south park is <>anything like family guy.

• And it ought to be noted that the actions of the characters do not always reflect upon the feelings of the writers.

On point #2, re; bitch - you should do a little research. Yes, bitch is a sexist word.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You know, it's really weird to me that it is, because while people say it's used to demean strong women, I used it because some people in my life who happened to be women were being verbally abusive, entitled as fuck and generally assholes. It's pretty much my feminine version of "douchebag"; that said, I don't expect everyone to have the same definition for it so I can see why it can be seen as offensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't take offense at it, but I do recognize the inherent misogyny in the history and general use of the word.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you need a feminine version of a name to call people? Do you have a blond-haired version, too?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol, no.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Any time people jump all over someone for using the term "bitch", I think they've totally lost touch in their pursuit of SJ awareness. It's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard of. It's pejorative language, it's MEANT to be pejorative. Just because it began as a sexist term doesn't mean it's something like "cunt". Stupid.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
^ This.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. It always baffles me when people say, "Don't use that word! It's sexist!" ...Except the word itself is meant to be offensive no matter which way you use it, so what's the point? So "bitch" isn't acceptable in polite conversation, but "fucker" and "asshole" are? Isn't that like saying, "Don't take a dump on your boss's shoes, but it's okay to do it in their office"?

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
This. Holy shit. "Cunt" is on a whole other level of offensive, and refers specifically to women. "Bitch" can be used to describe someone (not just women) who's seen as pushy, rude, bossy, flat-out mean or excessively whiny.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not disagreeing that either word is offensive, but I'd actually think of 'cunt' as being more commonly directed at men than women, whereas 'bitch' is exclusively directed either at women or at men who are seen as feminine. I think it might be a regional thing? (I'm in the UK.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I looked into this a while ago, because I was puzzled too.

The connotations the word has in America, mean it is a horribly misogynistic term used against women exclusively. If I were American, I would consider it a misogynistic word. The connotations it has in the UK, it isn't a misogynistic word, just an offensive term to use towards people otherwise covered by "douche" and "dick". "Twat" is very similar, but with less heat, so Americans will also lecture you on how you are horribly misogynistic and "are claiming that the UK is a magical land where sexism doesn't exist" if you use it.

The solution is to object to every single American who uses the word "spaz" online, and point out how offensive and ableist it is. I've never actually tried accusing them of pretending that America is a magical land where there is no prejudice against the disabled, because I'm not that much of a twat even when people are being terribly dense about language and culture not being American everywhere. Even when they try to claim that words are offensive purely because of their denotation in this one case.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My solution? Everyone is a wanker, a tosser, a toerag, or an arsehole. Use 'bloody' beforehand for extra emphasis.

I will confess to using 'twatwallet' occasionally. If one takes the literal meaning of it... well, that's a number of quite odd mental images.

IA, though with one reservation: I do respect and understand girls who say they personally don't like the term bitch -- they might have had negative connotations with the word, a jackass boyfriend or other male figure who called them that to put them down and denigrate them for being female. That would definitely color the term for them and I'd respect their desire to not have to hear it. However, the idea of jumping all over someone for using the term "bitch" is something I hate, although I'm a woman. First of all, people have learned the term "bitch" and use it all the time in both sexist and non-sexist contexts, and if someone says it in a non-sexist way, they probably aren't being sexist themselves. They're just saying what pretty much everyone in the english-speaking world says. Now, that in and of itself isn't a reason, and some people say that we still should educate people not to use the word, but I disagree. I use the term "bitch" quite a lot. I LIKE using it. When I use it, I don't use it in a sexist context -- and since I'm a girl, shouldn't I be the one deciding what a sexist context is? I personally have no problem with people who do use it, pretty much because I use it all the time because of three reasons:

1) You can't call a woman a jerk, a jackass, an asshole, a douchebag, a dick, a prick, a dickhead, or anything else that means the same thing as "bitch" without sounding really stupid. Seriously. "Bitch" is the word that best conveys your meaning when you're faced with a mean-spirited, nasty human being who happens to be female.

2) Personally -- and this is personal, I'm not gonna try to convince any girl who doesn't feel the same -- I love the idea of stealing insults from the people who insult you, the way Americans did with "Yankee". And we kind of did do it. Now, it's no longer just something men say to women, women have totally taken it back and can use it in a gazillion different contexts, including non-negative ones.

3) Phonetically speaking, it's just a fucking awesome word. "Bitch". Just listen to it! An explosive "B" that punctuates a sentence perfectly, a "tch" at the end that conveys anything from shock to humor to disgust so well without the difficulty of a hard consonant, and with both sounds combined with a "i" in the middle, it has so much flexibility that you can adjust your tone and inflection and emphasis to use it as anywhere from a familiar term of endearment to a wonderfully precise, vicious stinger.

In any case, I think that as a girl, I ought to be able to use the word "bitch" if I want to. And I don't mind men using the word "bitch" (in a way that isn't explicitly sexist -- using terms like "I'm gonna fuck that bitch so hard" or "shut your mouth bitch" and stuff is despicable and really offensive to me. I also think using the word "bitch" against men considered weak is pretty offensive too). Other women may feel differently and I respect that, but I'm gonna resent you if you tell me I shouldn't be allowed to say whatever the fuck I want to people of my own gender.

...you can't call a woman a jerk? Is jerk a male word and I did not know that?

I disagree with this except in regards to "douchebag" and "dickhead." Asshole is pretty indicative of mean-spirited, nastiness in general.

and since I'm a girl, shouldn't I be the one deciding what a sexist context is?

But if you use it against women, don't they also have the right to decide what a sexist context is? If they find your use if is sexist, doesn't that matter just as much as you not finding it sexist?

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You're kind of opening up a door, there. If that's true, then men should be able to decide too, since they are always called bitches.

Nobody "jumped all over someone for using the term bitch" - it was simply pointed out that yes, it is a sexist word. And even if that pisses you off, it doesn't change the fact that it's sexist. Nobody is saying you can't use it, people use sexist/racist/ist words all the time. But it doesn't harm anyone to actually acknowledge the inherent sexism and misogyny of the word.

I'm probably missing the point, but:

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, there are people out there who do jump on others for using the term. Luckily, not in this thread, but the internet is full of crazy people some days. So if that other anon was saying that they were tired that it happens sometimes (which is how I read that comment personally), then that's a pretty valid complaint.

But otherwise, you've got a good point.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely happened before - I've seen people dogpiled in certain LJ communities for using words like "stupid" or "crazy". So people certainly get dogpiled for using the word "bitch".

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree. And when people get all up in arms over the word "stupid", because it's being ableist, somehow.

someone on the sherlock rant meme flipped the fuck out because calling someone "nuts" is offensive towards the mentally ill

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's nuts.
