Ugh oh god that is the worst. I had to put up with that from my old housemate sometimes, but he had AWFUL AWFUL taste in music (he would play the same three fucking songs over and over again, like, literally he would come home from work every day and listen to the same song -- Reel to Real's "I Like to Move It" -- I am not making this up) so that made it even worse. Seriously, how someone could listen to the shit that he listened to unironically and then have the gall to make fun of the shit I listened to (which was usually something like The Smiths or Felt or something) is just mind-boggling

Man when I used to/whenever I MMO and go raiding, she is basically my playlist. It was pretty hilarious watching everyone else talk brag what HARDCORE METAL they are listening to RIGHT NOW and welp ok /Anywhere Is /mob-killing zen

I love Enya! One of my biggest pet peeves is people who are snobs about music. Listen to whatever makes you happy and try to ignore your family.

I love Enya. She is awesome. Don't listen to them. You like what you like and that is okay.

I hate when people mock other people's music choices. I have pretty eclectic tastes and will listen to just about anything. However, I have a serious obsession with scores. At least half of my music is made up of scores from tv and movies. And yes, I've gotten mocked quite a few times. I don't care. Anyone who can mock John Williams or Howard Shore or Hans Zimmer is not worth listening to.

I get judged for my taste in music. A lot. When that happens, I've begun judging them right back. My default is "What do you listen to, Coldplay?" since it kind of embodies lackluster music that everybody jizzes themselves over, but do whatever works for you. Apologies to anyone who likes Coldplay.

sometimes when i listen to people like kd lang or seal (two artists who are therapeutic to me) the people around me will poke fun at it (or me, even) but really all that matters is that it is beneficial to YOU. people like enya are very talented and though her music may not be everybody's cup of tea, nobody has any right to push their negativity on you. don't let them get to you.

eta: forgot to add that i get crap for listening to "old people stuff" like frank sinatra, billie holiday, etc too

ENYA ♥

There are no words to describe how amazing this woman's music is. Just. Guh.

I also get made fun of (or complained to) for listening to ambience music/soundscapes, classical music, movie/tv scores/instrumentals, international folk music (celtic music FTW! I absolutely ADORE the sound of bagpipes!), J-pop/rock, children's music, oldies, indie/alternative rock/pop, metal... basically everything I listen to. My friends and family are more interested in stuff like rap, hip-hop, r&b, reggae, etc. I've nothing against those genres, but they're just not for me (I have a handful of songs I do like, though-- just not many).

So yeah. I get teased. A lot. It sucks, but what can you do?

My brother actually throws fits when I listen to my soundscapes at night. Claims he gets "headdaches". Yet I'm not allowed to get annoyed when he listens to his precious hip-hop music 'cause everyone I know is pretty much on board with that.

My ma was friends with her family years ago actually. She's supposed to be sort of a complete bitch.

She's still hella good at what she does though. Can't say it's my bag, but just because I don't want to listen to it doesn't mean it's bad. I think it's just got kind of a cheesy image, so people bash it because everyone else does too.

Oh Enya! She was one of my first loves in music and though I still listen to her songs sometimes it's always on youtube rather than in my audio player (which sends data to my lastfm account) and you just made me wonder if it's some repressed fear about her music 'tainting' my perfect little hip stats

I love Enya, but I have to be in a certain mood to listen to the recordings of hers that I own or else I end up horribly depressed for no real reason.

Unfortunately, I don't know that there's much you can do about this, OP, except letting those people around you who are making jabs at your listening habits that it's hurtful. They might simply be tired of hearing the same songs over and over again; a lot of people begin to hate a song they may have once liked after being overexposed to it. If that's the case, you may try moving to another, more secluded area to listen to it, since you said headphones aren't always an option for you. Best of luck.

If they think Enya is bad music I seriously want to know what they think about popular artists like Justin Bieber and Britney Spears. Seriously, Enya is an incredible artist who actually has an amazing talent without all the hype. You shouldn't feel embarrassed at all about liking her but proud of it.
