Before you get the "lol, nice?" comments: bronies really can be a good community! If you avoid all the wank, it's kind of amazing to see what that fandom does. All of the fanmusic, the charities, the general talent and the help you can get--it's pretty cool. This is coming from someone who isn't as into the fandom as I could be.

I think that can be true of the entire Internet, though. You can find communities dedicated to things that you're already into, that are close together and positive and consist of great people. Negative aspects usually aren't what defines a fandom, or a community. Even if they're sometimes frustratingly hard to find, there are little pockets of amazing scattered everywhere.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The fandom IS very creative, but the "nice?" Um, no. Or let me put it this way:

Equestria Daily, Ponibooru, Ponychan, certain users on Furaffinity. Nope. Not nice at all.

Ugh. I hate Bronies. Makes me feel so bad for liking this show. B/

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
no. it's not nice. it's not nice at all. don't even try, OP. run as far away as you can, as fast as you can. This is seriously the worst fandom I've ever been in. It's full of whiny, entitled manchildren who try oh so hard to mask their misogyny, homophobia and general douchery by mindlessly chanting "LOVE AND TOLERATE" whenever someone calls them on their bullshit.

Do yourself a favor and just DON'T.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
chanting "LOVE AND TOLERATE" whenever someone calls them on their bullshit.

Srsly. Those assholes need to practice what they preach.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

It's actually really disturbing how a lot of Bronies are completely intolerant fuckwaffles who trot out the "LOVE AND TOLERANCE" speeches while they are basically telling minorities to shut up and get back in their closet and just LOVE AND TOLERATE and make way for majority rule.

[identity profile] faeiri.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Wait so what part of the fandom are you guys seeing? I mean, Ponibooru comments are bad, and in various places the Derpy thing was...bad, but apparently I'm the only one here who's met actual decent people who call themselves bronies?

The Brony community is only happy and nice as long as you agree with everything they do and say (or shut up if you have a different opinion). It's actually one of the most toxic sub-fandoms I've ever seen. They will preach tolerance and love, but are actually misogynist as hell, and they will send you rape and death threats if you ever say anything like, "I find your behavior hurtful". And they are so fucking entitled. They will even harass the creator of the show (even though she doesn't even work for it anymore). There's lots of MLP fans that are great, but stay far, far away from bronies.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen plenty of stuff coming out of the Brony fans that it actually turned me totally off the show. Watching a bunch of ableist assholes wave their privilege around over a character was one of the more gross things I've seen in awhile.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for insulting me while trying to "defend" me and others like me. I liked Derpy because she was like me. I have a voice that people pick on and call "retarded." I have eyes that don't look where they're "supposed" to unless I make a direct and concerted effort to do so.

Guess what? I'm also a klutz who means well and tries hard, but messes up frequently enough that others shy away.

At least I know I'm ableist for wanting to have a character I can identify with.

It's just as wanky as any other fandom. If you dislike your current ones, this one won't be any better.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the things I've seen bronies do, not even being a part of the fandom. Especially the entitled BS with Ditzy Doo, I'm seriously wondering if this is a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:46 am (UTC)(link)

I'm the opposite. I really like the show, but I REALLY don't think I'll be participating in the fandom any time soon...

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I used to like this fandom a lot more but lately I've gotten sick of it. I don't like the livejournal pony comm or /mlp/ or much of anything in between. It's all gotten so wanky and hostile.
I think the Penny Arcade forum pony thread is still okay, but at this point I've pretty much written off enjoying ponies with other people on the internet. It's not fun anymore.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like bronies for the most part, at least the ones I see (I stay the fuck away from image boards). Every time someone's been homophobic, there have been at least as many telling them to cut that the fuck out. I don't think they're super ~socially conscious~ at least in the way that LJ or tumblr is, but it seems like even though they don't know the buzzwords a lot of them are decent people when it counts.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Love the show. Haven't been that involved with the fandom, but I've heard a few things...

[identity profile] castorochiaro.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'd suggest that if you really want to get involved, lurk in a few different communities and look for one that fits your interests. I don't think this show is OMG THE GREATEST either, but there are parts I'm very fond of. I've found just picking and choosing communities/discussions works pretty well.

[identity profile] rococoprincess.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry the show didn't work out for you! Bronies are overall pretty nice, I know a lot and haven't met any crazy ones (I feel like most of the crazy comes from the haters, because I've never seen it). It is a great community in my opinion, but if you cant get into the show, you cant get into the show. Its all a matter of opinion. Try to befriend some bronies online maybe. Twitter is a great place, all the Twitter Bronies are really awesome.

I hope you find a nice fandom to fit into to, OP, this brony is rootin for ya!

[identity profile] bamboo.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's as just wanky as any other fandom, and the level of fake LOVE AND TOLERATE attitude a lot of bronies have is kinda creepy.

[identity profile] haruko-san13.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same way until I started the hijabi!fluttershy trend.

That being said, for every vocal rude dude, there's plenty of great people in the fandom! They may or may not identify as brony. Just lurk around until you find some cool people. :3

bronies are wretched, you're better off staying far away from mlp fandom.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
The brony fandom is, in a word, disappointing. Because you know what? It really did start out as an exceptionally nice and friendly fandom. However, somewhere along the line a love became an obsession and the fandom's entitlement levels went over 9000. I've defended bronies before and even called myself one, but after the Derpy debacle I really had to back away slowly from the fandom so that I could still enjoy my cartoon horse show. :(

I realize that every fandom has its wank and its fandumb, but the harassment of Yamino and the others who dared to voice their unpopular opinions crossed a line. The fact that the brony mantra is "love and tolerate" made the bullying (which was often downright vicious) all the more grating. It's like how Fox News has a flagrant bias even though its slogan is "Fair and Balanced."

That's right, I went there. The brony fandom has Fox News levels of hypocrisy.
