Fandom double standards. I doesn't only happen in Sherlock. If you say you hate some het pairing, it's all pats on the back. Say you don't like slash or a pairing and everyone is up in arms.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, you're right. Fandom is just really heterophobic, isn't it?

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
not ALL fandoms......just some.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No it isn't, because heterophobia is not a legitimate issue.

[identity profile] dougalbug.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Except for the fact it is. And it's statements like that which make me believe it is even more so.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
No, it isn't. Negativity against heterosexuality in niche corners of the internet isn't even remotely comparable to the shit, intentional and otherwise, that we queers have to put up with all the time in our day to day lives. It's disingenuous and quite frankly offensive to call it "heterophobia" and thereby imply that it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
^^^ this.

[identity profile] were-lemur.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
+1

See also, the fact that "straight-bashing" isn't something heterosexuals have to worry about.

While they might not need to worry about it (unless you're on say, Tumblr), that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Someone having it far worse doesn't remotely negate another problem.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Please, tell me you just didn't compare being physically attacked on the streets, discriminated against, and being fired off your job in RL with a flame war in Tumbler, and that it was a bad attempt at a joke.

Seriously, it's not the same. There's no such thing as heterophobia. And being told 'you're a bigot because you don't like slash' is rude, yes, but it doesn't belong in the same galaxy as the very real consequences of homophobia.

Tumblr? You're comparing people being beaten to death to "worrying" about something on TUMBLR?

What. The. Actual. FUCK!?

What the comment was saying was that Heterophobia does exist and is more prevalent on Tumblr which is full of slashy fangirls. Fandom is different from the real world. In the real world, het is all over the place. No one bashes it. Go into fandom and it's all slash where het is the minority, hated and scarce. Am I the only one that actually read this comment?

[identity profile] dougalbug.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. My reason for doing so is having witnessed, on multiple and separate occasions, straight men in my hometown having the living daylights kicked out of them by a group of gay men, for no other reason than the victim was straight.

I'm aware this doesn't happen in the majority, and it's usually, in fact, the other way around.
I'm 100% supportive of LGBT rights, however, I also find it offensive when some (not all) gay people act as if they're the only people in the world who can, or indeed are, discriminated against. Because that's far, far from the truth.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say misogynistic more than heterophobic. Because all the hate usually goes towards the female part of the het pairs, or any female character really.

[identity profile] oparu.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
This! Definitely this.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You need to start hanging out in other places. Fandom is pretty homophobic outside of LJ if that makes you happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh don't be an ass. Assuming that not liking slash must make it plausible that you'd be happy to find homophobia in fandom is just the kind of kneejerk petty-minded SJW BS that the OP means.

YKINMK only applies to "approved" kinks, clearly.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That may be true of your experience, but not for me. It all depends on why and how people are saying they dislike something.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I need to join that fandom now.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they just don't like you.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
you win for the dumbest comment in this thread. No wonder you're anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Is this because you got jumped on for posting in a Kirk/Spock comm with a Spock/Uhura icon or whatever?

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Get it right vs relying on second hand accounts and information. I changed my default icon to SU which happened to change in the KS comm on all my posts and NO, my comment about fandom all for het hating has nothing to do with me personally. The world doesn't revolve around me anon. I've observed this het hating in the Trek fandom in regards to SU vs KS but I've seen it on other fandoms as well (HP, SPN, Sherlock). My comment was talking about fandoms in general, not MY personal experiences.

Maybe if others would post something non-anon and use a personal icon they'd notice that if they ever changed said icon, it would automatically alter the icon for everything they've every posted. Instead, they opt to keep the "anon bag" over their head and snipe from the relative safety of the shadows.
