Now I want to know what fandom. It would be so nice to see some bi characters on TV, but they don't exist in Hollywood.

[identity profile] atheist-cheese.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
bi ladies do, but only in a "temporary break from menz to make the show hot" sort of way. Not that it's not okay to be a bicurious lady -- I'd just a like a little more varied presentation.

Off topic, but yay, Suits icon! <3

Not OP

Maybe Revenge? I don't watch it, but I seem to remember friends debating whether a specific character was gay or bi.

... GCB?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I'm thinking so. I think some of the wording is a bit off, but for the most part it seems to fit.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
DA.

I don't think so. Blake is pretty much gay. The only woman he's ever been tied to romantically is Cricket and it's been made clear that they have a marriage of convenience/appearance. It was even confirmed that they only have a daughter because they got drunk and had sex once however many years ago and Cricket got pregnant.

Oh, anon, I feel your pain. WHY does bi always translate down the line the least accepted orientation on TV/in fandom? Why aren't there more bi ladies/dudes on TV and/or in movies?

But that just runs into my issues with fandom (and society, to a similar degree) and it's obsession with "omg, likes guys/girls, must be gay! and nothing else! always gay! ALWAYS SLASH! straight/bi/more than meets the eye is NOT an option" which, are issues, lol.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a lot of slash-fic where one, if not both, of the characters in the relationship are bi. Just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But why does it require reading slash fic? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy slash, but I have issues with fandom turning straight characters bi/gay and bi characters gay with the intention of making slash pairings(because those are the most prevalent) workable for their fic.

Like I said, I enjoy slash, and I enjoy well-written stories exploring a character's sexuality, but so many slash fics try to make it into a point or an issue to pound home, that it looses a lot of the appeal for me.

I haven't read a lot of slash fic that erased the bisexuality of a character but I do agree that it's a problem in our society. As a bisexual woman, it's very hard to explain to people that while I'm attracted to women more often and with more intensity than I am to men, it does not mean that I'm 100% gay. I am bisexual and I have been attracted to men in the past. However, that also doesn't mean that I can't identify as lesbian/gay, as well. I'm all of the above! I'm bisexual, I'm a lesbian and I'm gay. I shouldn't have to spell that out to people or explain my reasoning behind identifying as all three. And yet, I do.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I identify as straight, but I have been attracted to women before. More than once. But I'm primarily attracted to men, so I just go with straight, just to avoid dealing with all the drama that arises from saying you're bi(and that's not even taking into account where I live and the opinions of people around me when it comes to LGBT issues). You have my utmost respect for actually trying to explain it to the uneducated masses.
Life's more complicated than any ONE classification, and neither TV/film or fandom navigate those waters with any level of success (so far).

I'm not positive which fandom this is about, but I think I know, and if that's the case, it's definitely frustrating to see him constantly referred to as gay by everyone when he's obviously...not. I don't know that I'd call him bi (it's really complicated, which is actually pretty awesome, even if everyone refuses to acknowledge how complicated it is), but I definitely wouldn't call him gay just because he does seem to be pretty obviously in love with a woman. But as far as I know, the actor calls him gay just like everyone else does, although the way he describes him contradicts that. And although he's clearly Something Other Than 100% Gay to me, I've only seen I think two other people suggest that he's not actually (completely) gay.

But yeah, I don't get why bi/something more complicated is never an option. I'll disagree with the "straight is NOT an option" part, especially in society (though there may be some of that in fandom, at least in certain circles), but in general I'm annoyed that there are very few characters in anything that have an orientation more complicated than can be summed up in one commonly-used-and-understood-by-everyone word.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
(it's really complicated, which is actually pretty awesome, even if everyone refuses to acknowledge how complicated it is)

EXACTLY. What makes it so interesting is that it's not a straight(lol) answer. It's more complicated than that. Real life is more complicated than straight or gay or bi.

I'll disagree with the "straight is NOT an option" part, especially in society (though there may be some of that in fandom, at least in certain circles)
tbh that part was meant to be about fandom, and a particular fandom I've been in especially(Supernatural).

Can you tell me the fandom you're referring to, anon? I don't think I recognize it, but the way you're describing the relationship makes it sounds really interesting and is making me want to watch it!

I've see more "I'm not straight, I just love him!" (which I HATEHATEHATE) but this could just be depending on fandom. I'm bi, but I'd rather see slash fic where the character made 100% gay than slash fic with two straight guys in love, though, of course, slash fic with characters as bi (if the character isn't canonically gay) would be best.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to the day when a character's sexuality won't be a big deal one way or the other, it'll just be another trait like their hobbies or interests or hair color. I know that the way things are in our culture makes it why it's such a big deal for a reason, though...it's just too bad.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say ship what you want to ship, as it's clear you're not trying to turn a gay character straight, which is what people typically object to.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom can't be compared to religion, but not in the way most people here seem to be saying.

If someone tries to get you interested in their fandom, it's a minor annoyance, and they're only suggesting that you might like something in addition to their other fandoms. If someone is trying to get someone to convert to their relgion, they are by default saying 'what you believe is bullshit, and I expect you to accept my beliefs to replace your own' which is pretty damn offensive.

Saying that religion is more important than fandom, therefore it's ok to push on other people is ridiculous. It being a bigger, more serious thing than fandom is exactly what makes it much much worse.

OP's friend is an asshole.

WHY IS EVERYONE BEING SO VAGUE ABOUT THE FANDOM.

Seriously, if you say what show this is, it will probably get more fans. Why be so coy?

Highly unlikely. If you're talking about Jack being in the closet? Yeah, no. just no.

But I want to know the fandom!
