There's a difference between knowingly deceiving people to get their money and doing it due to unforeseeable circumstances

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps the pregnancy was unexpected. Some people don't have abortion money squirreled away in case of emergency.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
the second part of OP's secret implies they knew about the pregnancy at the time they asked for money and knowingly lied about needing computer parts in order to get money to have an abortion

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Judging by the comments here? I can't say I blame OP. If the only way to get money for an abortion is to get donations from people online, and there's a chance that people won't give to such a controversial issue, better to lie than be forced to have an unwanted child.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
You mean, forced to *deliver* an unwanted child, yes? Because nowhere is there a law that says you have to keep the baby you don't want.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Have as in forced to carry and deliver said unwanted child. There's no reason you should have to do that, either.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
And, abortions not being illegal in the US (granted, I'm just assuming OP is American), OP does not HAVE to carry a baby and deliver it. But the right to have an abortion does not mean the right to a free abortion.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't free. It was paid for. OP presumably did not have the money for the abortion, and needed it, so as not to be forced to have an unwanted child.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
nayart

In that case the OP is guilty of fraud.

Which says more about the world we live in than OP.

Exactly.

Thanks, LJ, for reminding me to never give anyone any of my fucking money.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
They damn well should have the right to free abortions.

If you don't have free abortions and you don't have the money to pay for one, then yes you do HAVE to carry the baby and deliver it. Don't act like people who can't afford an abortion have the same choices as people who do.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Most people who consider abortion don't want to spend 9+ months carrying something inside they're not even gonna keep and many certainly want to avoid an agonizing birth. It's physical and mental abuse for someone who doesn't want to give birth.
And do you honestly believe that putting a baby up for adoption is the solution for everything? It may work for some, doesn't make it okay for everyone.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
it doesn't grow in a pot in a cupboard for nine months, you know. There's a bit more to it than delivery. If she doesn't want it inside her, she shouldn't have to have it inside her.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
This, basically. I hate lying, but it sure beats bringing an unwanted kid into the world.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Too fucking bad, then. No one is obligated to donate to anything they don't want to. The OP lied to get what she wanted-- to friends who were only trying to help, no less-- and that's not right. And the fact that you condone her behavior doesn't speak well of the kind of person you are, frankly.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I like me better than you. Actually, I used to like reading your comments here but now I'm judging the shit out of you, as well.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I'm crushed that someone who condones lying, deceit, and taking advantage of good people is judging me.

...It's kind of flattering, come to think of it.

Seriously, though, are you just not hearing yourself? You're basically saying that it's okay to step on and use people who're trying to help you to achieve your goals. Since when is trampling over genuinely kind people ever okay?

And for someone who is so obviously "pro-choice", you're awfully against other people's choice to not approve of abortion. In fact, you pretty much said that it was okay to deceive those people because they wouldn't have donated anyway, as if they shouldn't have had a choice in the matter because they weren't on board with you and your ideals.

God. I can't even.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Better than being on the side that forces a woman to have a child she doesn't want.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am against abortion. That said, I'm pro-choice. Always have been. The idea of abortion disturbs me, and using it as a form of birth-control disgusts me completely, but I've always understood that some people just don't share the same beliefs as me, and I respect that.

That said, I don't think it's okay to deceive people who are trying to help you. My stance on the life/choice debate doesn't matter. What matters is that the OP willingly lied to and took advantage of her friends, and that's what makes OP's decision wrong on so many levels. It's not the abortion that I'm fighting against, it's the means she chose to procure it.

What she did was wrong. Completely wrong. She used her friend's money, and the very least she could have done was be honest with them about where the money was going to.

People in this thread are fighting for pro-choice but that's not what this is about at all.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
You say the OP should have been honest about where the money was going, but if they were and then they didn't raise enough (not to mention the harassment I'm sure they'd receive - and hell people get scary on the internet and occasionally hunt down peoples home address) then where would they be?

You don't have forever to raise that money.

The real problem is that the OP lives somewhere where they don't have free abortions. Which means that people without the money to pay for abortions don't actually have the same ability to chose as those who do.

I doubt you'll find anyone anywhere who lists an abortion as a goal they want to achieve. An abortion is an emergency and probably a pretty desperate one if someone is reduced to pan-handling on the internet to fund it. I don't know where the OP lives but if this is what it took for her to get her abortion, it's not likely to be somewhere with easy access to a nearby, safe, low-cost facility. This looks to me like a desperate person in a desperate situation, doing what they had to do. If abortion was free of charge, free of judgement, safe and locally available to all women who want it, as it should be, this sort of subterfuge would be unnecessary. So, she lied to do something that in a just world she shouldn't have to lie about. Big fucking deal. Lesser of two evils.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, LJ is pretty damn liberal. She didn't have to lie about what she was doing on lj.

It's not even the panhandling, it's the deliberate lying. And no, I don't believe she "had" to. I believe it would not have been pleasant to come clean about this and it was easier to lie, but you know what? That's what makes the OP a shitty person - lying to her friends because it was easier.

And you know what? I get that. She was desperate. Whatever.

But that should be it. Not condoning the OP's behavior. Not applauding it. I wouldn't be so disgusted by this thread if people would quit treating the OP like she's some victim who had no choice in the matter. Fact is, she had a choice. She chose to deceive her friends, and I'm against that. I don't care what your reasons are, you don't do that to people, especially not good people. And this "oh well, but if the world were different..." approach is such utter bull.

Because the world is shitty that justifies amoral behavior? Because the world is shitty you should step on the few genuinely considerate people in it? Can you imagine the kind of world we'd live in if everyone were to think that way?
