too bad you've had an awful experience with it. considering how large it is, i guess it's safe to say that most people haven't, though. so either you're unlucky as heck and keep on bumping into the real loonies, whom only make up a small percentage of the fandom, or you're a crazy of a different caliber (aka, an SJW) and take offense at everything.

Oh yeah, I forgot about how ~crazy~ it is to be repulsed by the disgusting, hurtful, offensive misogyny that practically oozes out of both SPN the show and like 95% of its fandom. Because I'm an SJW and that's a bad thing because omg, she might expect us to stop calling women b*tches just for existing! AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT.

Sucks to be you. I'd much rather be called ~crazy and demeaned by strangers for caring about social justice and being a feminist than be a misogynist (or at the least, misogynist-sympathizer) and anti-social justice asshole like you. :D

I'm not the above anon, but I certainly wouldn't say that the majority are even like that. Are there loud, vocal and downright offensive areas of the SPN fandom? Of course. But is certainly isn't the majority. In fact, it seems to be largely exclusive to anonymous communities and douchey comments on youtube. Even the SPN imdb forums are surprisingly sane.

I wouldn't know them as of late, but when I was involved in the fandom, it was basically a shitstorm of sexism and racism, with a side helping of homophobia in a lot of ways. I literally could not find one single forum or discussion or area of SPN fandom available to me that didn't involve TONS and tons of gross sexist comments against the female characters, misogynistic slurs all over the place (along with homophobic and ableist slurs), and so on.

This was a few years ago (probably around when s4 was airing, I think?), but I don't really believe that it's changed that much. I still can't venture into even the most peripheral areas of the fandom without seeing the women being called b*tches and wh*res, ffs. I believe there are some nice corners of SPN fandom, but I certainly don't believe the majority is such.

And that's not even touching the actor-stalking, actor conspiracy theories, and the more disgusting kinds of fic featured prominently in the fandom, so... yeah.

I have been in fandom since the very beginning, and while I have seen a bit of what you described (but that's in every fandom), it was never to the extent you experienced. And I've been everywhere, both LJ communities and not alike.

I think the problem is that what crazies there are are *loud*. And then the SJWs come along and things get *louder*. And while those two extreme sides are battling out, the majority of fandom, most of which don't even want to get involved in all that drama, are caught in the middle and totally overlooked.

If you're in a classroom of 20 kids and three kids are having it out in a corner and the other 17 are playing quietly in another corner, who are you going to focus your attention on? The 17 well-behaved kids or the 3 kids causing a ruckus?

That's my point.

Anyway, fandom has calmed down a lot since then. It was pretty skeevy in the beginning, ngl, but it's much calmer. Not as much crazies.

they like to think they're "warriors of justice", but in reality they're all just elitist, self-important assholes who look down on anyone who doesn't fall into their "defense category". they hate men, rich people, white people, straight people, religious people (basically everyone who they feel is "privileged"), and anyone who has a differing opinion than them. they enjoy taking things out of context and making absurd assumptions and just generally attacking everything that moves (that falls under the above categories). they're hypocritical and insane and loud and should be avoided at all costs.
