McNuggetMignogna, an anime voice actor most famous for playing Edward Elric and Tamaki Suoh, and for being super religious and rather homophobic. There is a big long thread on him in some forum where rumors popped up that at conventions he would hit on underage female cosplayers of Edward.(no subject)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)Truth? He is an evangelical christian, which means yes, he doesn't approve of homosexuality. If you feel better hating him for that, it's your hate-on. But people probably wouldn't be aware of that if rabid 13-year-old fangirls didn't run up to him and show him their Roy/Ed porn all the time.

In all fairness that's gotta be awkward for any voice actor reguardless of political orientation because WTH is the 'correct' response to that anyways?

Yes, it's very unsettling when children show you porn of your character. There are ways to handle that without coming across as either a huge jerk or a huge homophobe, though, and if young, ill-behaved yaoi girls help alert the rest of us to who's homophobic and who isn't, then they play a vital role in the great ecosystem of fandom. If he's got the right to his opinions on homosexuality, then the fans- some of whom care a lot about equality, some of whom have queer friends and family, and some of whom are the homosexuals he doesn't approve of- have the right to their opinions about him. I'm not the type to go around bitching about him at inappropriate times, but I am glad it's public information now what kind of person he is.

This is pretty much my response to anything associated with him. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 05:22 am (UTC)(link)But, on the other hand, I have seen him do a couple of panels and interacted with him a few times. He's always been polite and courteous, and on the instances that he's spoken about his religious beliefs? It's either been in a direct response to a fan's question or because it was the theme of the panel he was on. (And in the case of the former, he asked the fan if they really wanted him to answer before he did.) At some point in 2010 he did a panel at Tekkoshocon that addressed most, if not all, of the big rumors about him and someone recorded it and slapped it up on youtube in 9 parts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2mLZJoGCPk (It takes until about 1:20 to actually get started, before that it's just the panel description.)
In the more recent sections of the Hetalia dub he's been Greece, and they didn't de-gay the character for him. He'll also talk---during his religious panel---about how he was removed from the leadership position he held at his church by the higher-ups because they didn't think his work in anime (specifically the character Ed Elric, if not others) created poor role models for the impressionable youth of the church. So maybe for a while he felt one way, and then his beliefs changed a bit because of his experiences? It's hard to say.
He definitely messed up when questioned about Fai in the past---and, truth be told, that and the final dub of that show are the main reasons that I got angry about him for so long. But that was years ago now and it's entirely possible that he's changed. It's also entirely possible that he's just very good at pleasing fans (and pissing off detractors), and we'll never know for certain one way or the other. Trying to figure out actors can be hard that way. But as a person who really enjoyed disliking him for a long time, when I look at all the things on the internet and think about my personal experiences, I want to believe that he's just a guy that's made some really public mistakes and is trying his best to be an okay guy. I know that wouldn't really fly for everyone, but it's the conclusion I'm currently at.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 03:25 am (UTC)(link)So Vic? Basically? Yea...he believes in his own hype BIG TIME and acts like a "rock star". His fangirls don't help either. He is one of the biggest pains in the ass as a guest to handle (heard straight from a co-staffer who had misfortune of handling him) but he's popular so in most cases he is...tolerated. Staff make effort to bend backwards to be polite to this guy even when he acts like an egotistical asshat.
As for him being polite at panels? Well...yea. He's a voice actor/actor. Of course he will be, he has an image to maintain so he's not going to ruin his precious rep with his army of fangirls so he puts on the smile and show.
Not just him, it's every voice actor. They are "on" when they do cons in front of fans. It's basic PR/image. Johnny Young Bosch, while not as bad, has been getting a little like this lately, Sean Schemmel when "off" is a mixed bag (I don't dislike him but he can come off fairly...fratboy offensive if you're a girl), going back a little in the way back con machine I remember when ADV guests (including Vic at the time) were all over and remembering that Lauren Goodnight chick (i think that's her name, she was pretty irrelevant, tbh and like didn't really do major voice acting but emceed for a while at different cons i guess to stay relevant) being super nice to people when "on" but in reality was a drama queen "offstage". Spike Spencer is...you know, I don't even know where to start with him, it's not favorable though like..at all.
Now some ARE, from my experience, actually really nice people for real. Tom Wayland, Greg Ayres, Chris Ayres, Lisa Ortiz, Monica Rial, Michael Sinterniklaas, Scott McNiel, Brian Drummond, Brad Swaile, Colleen Clinkbeard, Caitlin Glass to name a few are genuinely nice in a non-phony way.
I've seen it be a total mixed bag in terms of guests, but Vic sorta takes the cake for fuckwittery.
So OP, hate on peacefully, he is kind of a douche irl.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 04:47 am (UTC)(link)As far as his religion goes, ya he's a strong believer, but is that really so bad? If you peel back all of the rumors then I don't think he's really done anything terrible with his views. During the panel he didn't say anything about religion accept that he would be leading a prayer Sunday morning for anyone who was interested. I went to a Chris Patton panel where he spent roughly 30 minutes talking about his religious views with one person in the crowd. Which honestly I think is fine (although it did get kind of boring), but I wonder if his views had been Christian if people would have had a bigger problem with it? I feel like there's this stereotype of Christians being super closed minded that makes people dislike them. And there are Christians like that, which is sad because that's not what the religion is about "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" some Christians truly believe that but get lumped in with the closed minded ones.
Sorry for the tangent, I guess all I am trying to say is I'm not going to believe the rumors about him until I get to see proof with my own eyes, ya know?
