Wow, the load time here is so much faster. It's like having a low-grade headache go away. I had no idea how slow LJ had gotten.

+1. I don't think I'll be missing LJ.

+1

I agree with some of the Anons that DW is visually pretty old and ugly compared to LJ, but damn if it isn't speedy and user friendly.

now for all of fandom to move to dreamwidth. please. this needs to happen. i can't stand browsing on LJ anymore

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Every fandom seems to be moving to Tumblr instead. *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know how the heck you comment to someone's tumblr post without reblogging it or what? How do you read other people's comments? Are there not comments?

it's me, czeslaw, i just made a new account due to hating my old one's name

The only way you can make comments are if you have disqus set up on your blog, which is a really inefficient commenting system

or you reply to the post if you're following the person

yeah tumblr is not great for keeping track of discussion/etc but i've learned to deal with it because it's really nice for non-fic areas of fandom

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh I don't want to make yet another account on another site so I'm posting anon but anyway

Your tumblr friends have to go into their preferences and enable commenting. Then every time they post, they should have a speech bubble icon on their post that allows you to leave a comment without reblogging. The problem is that if you want to carry on a conversation thread, it's practically impossible without reblogging. Then you get those ugly comment trees that are confusing and ugly.

I have a tumblr, but it's mostly for reblogging and posting artwork. Tumblr really sucks for any kind of text-based fandom activity (LIKE FANFICTION)

Yes, this. I was seriously boggling at the sheer number of people who were like "FS should move to Tumblr!!!"

... I have no idea how the hell that would work and still be readable. And Disqus is pretty slow on a couple of my (admittedly older) machines, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so relieved I just thought I was a giant idiot.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-06-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I just figured out yesterday that ghostery was blocking Disqus. All these pages that I thought just didn't have comments!
phoebe_zeitgeist: (fire)

[personal profile] phoebe_zeitgeist 2012-06-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's one of the things that has dissuaded me from trying to use tumblr. It isn't so much that ghostery blocks disqus, as it is that disqus has chosen to require browsers to accept its bugs as well as its cookies before it will work. Disqus is blocking disqus, for anybody who isn't down with being tracked.

There must be some upside to sites for using their commenting system, but damned if I can see an upside for users.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You can scroll through the notes of a post and see if anyone reblogged with a comment. But it's not easy or simple.
fritzier: (hugo presented without comment)

[personal profile] fritzier 2012-06-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
god forbid your post gets more than 20 notes

because your notes start disappearing and then you have to go to your main post and then you have to keep loading notes and they include EVERY SINGLE LIKE AND REBLOG you have to search specifically for the reblog comments

and even then it shortens the whole thing so you have almost no idea what you're in for

needless to say tumblr is just not the best for discussion.

it's just so much easier to keep track of things + post fic + idk, have a community? unless your fandom is small on tumblr? on dreamwidth/LJ

like i get tumblr is a lot better for artists but why are people migrating from communities too my otp's comm is dead

tumblr is nicer for me as a social networking tool though + art posting is way better too + easier to get noticed?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Oh, I agree. Hence the *sigh*. Tumblr is great for posting works, but sucks when it comes to the *community* aspect of a fandom. It's so hard to reply to people, or jump in a conversation. You don't even get any kind of notice when someone reblogs your post and comments unless you check the notes! Which is fine for tiny posts, but some fandoms get thousands of notes on one work if you're a moderately well known artist/ficcer. No way to scroll through *that* and have a conversation.

I guess I feel that Tumblr is making cliques even more cliquish. And it's making it difficult to meet new people.

/boring thoughts on Tumblr
fritzier: (hugo is really french)

i need to get more icons i have no suitable ones for this post

[personal profile] fritzier 2012-06-03 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
yes, exactly! i just miss the old days, even though i was a non-contributer/lurker/commenter

from observation it just seemed like everyone KNEW each other if they were in the same community! you didn't have to go through all the trouble of everyone following each other, and that's ONLY if you have a small fandom...

what about doctor who? or supernatural? i haven't been able to make any tumblr friends in those areas even though they are/used to be my main fandoms.
