Was there anything particularly teeth-gritting about Black Widow's character treatment? I am chock full of sexism for this year and don't think I could make it through another movie I'm supposed to be escaping through without blowing up if I get that shit in my face. I really want to see this movie too.

I have a feeling AYRT will tell you differently, but personally I thought Black Widow is a kickass character, both well-written and well-acted. All in all one of my favorite things about this movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a relief. Thnx.

Seconding. She rocked, she held her own with super-soldier, Hulk, Ironman, a *god* - she was just amazing.

And ScarJo has been doing a great job of calling out interviewers for sexist questions, too. Much better than I expected from her, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any links? Awesomeness like that always makes me feel better.

Ha, I was just watching a couple of those earlier. Here's one where she's all "what kind of interview is this?!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHxzxgwJTFc

Apparently she got asked that question several times. Morons. I'm glad she calls them on it, maybe they'll learn.

Here's one where the ridiculousness of the difference between the two questions that got asked (one to RDJ and one to her) was just overwhelming: The rabbit food question

And here's another one where Samuel L. Jackson isn't helping, although this is more a roundtable than an interview.

DA

No, Black Widow is generally agreed to be kick-ass. It was all the other parts that bothered me like how both villains and heroes were really stupid. Destroy a city to save it!1!! That kind of dumb. I understand it's generic superhero fare but for characters who are supposed to be super smart it was disappointing

I thought the people who were like "Destroy a city to save it!1!!" weren't the heroes, though. They were the super secret politicians, they weren't supposed to be smart, they were just supposed to have power. Which is, yeah, a scary prospect, but kind of a realistic one IMO.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The heroes caused assloads of property damage.

Oops! I thought you were talking about the shadowy figures who decided that nuclear bomb detonating in New York City was a good idea, instead of the superheroes on the ground actually fighting the giant alien hoards.

My bad.

If you don't think property damage is going to happen in a fight like that, you are very silly.

Property damage happens in regular police shootouts all the time. In fact, the vast majority of bullets in your average shootout will do property damage rather then actually hit any flesh or blood.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It always throws me out of an episode or movie when the answer is so glaringly obvious to a casual viewer and you're supposed to be watching a genius scientist/brilliant detective puzzle it out over the next thirty minutes or so.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the Doctor not knowing what the forest was?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually saving my Dr. Who virginity... I'm just really in love with the idea of watching it for the first time with someone who really loves the show and being able to let them almost experience it again for the first time through me.

At no point is she designated the romantic interest of another character (there's a very touching scene with Hawkeye, but to me it just played out as two soldiers who've had each other's backs for so long that they just know one another and care for each other), which for an action flick, is just amazing. She also has a pretty big role in the finale (second only to Tony's, I think). And her costume, while sexy, is no more sexified than any of the menfolk (it helps that Joss Whedon apparently considered that half of his audience would/could be female and indulged some equal opportunity fanservice. Possibly more than equal...)

Also, there is Agent Hill, who only has a small, but intense role. And I was very pleased to notice that while they're in the SHIELD headquarters, it looks like half of the agents and staff are women. Just background characters, like the rest of SHIELD, but to me, seeing two women marching down the corridor in military garb when it could have just as easily been two men is kind of a big deal in an action flick.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I definitely have to see this movie now. I know it might sound ridiculous but just the idea of unnamed female extras in positions of implied power is so much more awesome to me than a 'special' woman character. Maybe just because so often they're treated outside of the norm, like they overcame their inherent handicap or something.

I LOVED Black Widow. She's one of the strongest characters in the movie, imo. If you haven't seen it, I don't want to go into too much detail because spoilers, but I thought that they did a phenomenal job. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
There *was* the mewling quim line, though. Basically it's the slightly-less modern way to say whining cunt. I might have been fine with it (it's used by the bad guy), but Whedon was so proud of getting it past the censors.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Plus said bad guy has no real reason to use it, other than "because Joss Whedon wanted him to".

I actually really loved this commentary on that whole issue.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I... wish I could believe that version of things. And if it'd just been in the movie, perhaps I could have. But his happiness at getting the phrase out there? I don't know how you can read that as anything else but someone pleased to start circulating a 'new' word to call women. There wasn't any condemnation of the term. Even if he was doing it to make a point, there are millions of people who will miss that point (because it's not well executed - indeed, I don't think it's there at all) and use it as normal. To women who *aren't* as strong or in a position of power as Black Widow.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh ICK, ICK ICK! I hate the world mewling with it's kittenish implications. I actually just prefer whining. They found the only word with even less implied power than whining. Ha ha, sneaky wordplay misogyny is so funny.
