Does someone has any recs for good animated shows/films with LGBTQ characters? (I'm game for anything)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
*have, sorry. It's getting late.

Revolutionary Girl Utena?

Sailor Moon?

most of 'em are anime, embarrassing for us Westerners

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw Sailor Moon years ago, but Utena, I've always been meaning to check out without finding the time to do so, so thanks for the recs!

(and yes, I've been trying to remember some titles, and there's a significantly higher number of animes with LGBTQ characters than western cartoons. There could be a number of explanations (a "animation is for children" mindset, "won't somebody think of the children", for one) but still.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's embarrassing until you find out that gay characters in anime has nothing to do with less homophobia and everything to do with Japanese culture not fathoming that seeing gay characters will turn their kids gay. They just make sure their kids know better than that.

Do you know of any others? For some reason I couldn't get into either of these - either as a kid or now. :c

I feel like a bad lesbian anime fan, but I seem to struggle with finding them interesting.

If you're ok with reading subtitles Card Captor Sakura. Yes, it's anime, and yes, it's for kids, but it's really quite good. Get the subbed version, though, the dubbed version was edited to shit, and (since it was intended for us kids tv) all the gay content was removed.

Mission Hill has an older gay couple who are really cool, and are the focus of some episodes.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I love Card Captor Sakura!
The French dub was unaltered though (at least, I think so? It was pretty hard to misread Tomoyo's feelings and Toya and Yukito's relationship...)

Mission Hill, I'm keeping that in mind. Thanks!

Ah yeah, another Mission Hill fan! Gus and Wally were adorable in that show.

I had no idea there were LGBT characters in Cardcaptors.. but then again, I only watched the English version.

..But then again x2, I DID kind of get that vibe from Madison/Tomoyo.. or was it Tomoya.. whichever.

No. 6 is a sci-fi anime that has a romance between the two male leads. I really love how it is similar to so many sci-fi stories with m/f pairings in that the focus is on the sci-fi plot and the romance is important, but still a side plot, and in that way it is normalized. There is also a character who I think is supposed to be genderqueer. It's really good, and I've heard that the novels it is based on are even better.

They're side characters, but Mouretsu Pirates/Bodacious Space Pirates has a canon lesbian couple to top off the loads of subtext. Despite the name, there's essentially zero fanservice, I swear! It's just really, really good and basically about women being awesome and competent in space. It's a currently airing anime (last episode airs Saturday), so it's only available subbed -- you can stream it legally on Crunchyroll, if you don't do downloading.

Not to spoil too much, but Gankutsuou has at least one male character who's (unrequitedly) in love with another, and another who's either trans or a crossdresser. It's also really, really good. :B

Yuru Yuri's cast is almost entirely gay or bi, but it's a low-brow moe comedy so idk how much you would like it?

The Read or Die OVA has hints of a lesbian romance. The main character is implied to be a lesbian while her crush is bisexual.

I'm not sure if this counts since it's a bit vague, but. There was this gay author/artist/awesome lady called Tove Jansson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tove_Jansson), who wrote (among other things) the Moomin books. They start out as children's books but get a lot more complex/philosophical towards the end.

And then there's a bunch of animated adaptations for those, and personally I'm quite fond of the 1990 anime cartoon version (Tanoshii Moomin Ikka). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomin_(1990_TV_series)
It's a weird/eccentric children's cartoon, but IMO it's actually really good. And visually beautiful. And has an amazing soundtrack. Just avoid the terrible "second season" that was made some years later. And I think there are a couple "gender role episodes" (don't know what else to call them) which are slightly problematic, which is a bit strange because the series manages to be pretty good with gender issues whenever it's not trying, ie: most the time.

I think there's a lot of LGBTQ subtext in the Moomin world, though nobody makes any fuss of it in-story, and somehow most readers/viewers manage not to notice. Jansson has based several of the characters on herself or her girlfriends. I'm fairly sure that Tofslan and Vifslan (whose English translation names I've managed to forget...) at least are meant to be a lesbian couple. And Too-ticki is probably a lesbian too, since she's based on Tove Jansson's life-partner.

Sakamichi no Apollon / Kids on the Slope!

There's het in there too but the whole thing felt like a love story between the two boys.

What's really great as well is that it's animated by a really high profile team/studio. :)
