My reason for not wanting to meet celebrities is very petty: I don't want them to think that I think they're better than me. I don't want them to get to experience me coming up to them and telling them I admire them, when there are millions of people who work just as hard at what they do and never get that kind of attention and recognition.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But... do you admire each and every one of those millions of people? There's a difference between "wow you're good at your menial job that does not in any way affect my life" and "the character that you represent has come to mean a great deal to me and I appreciate all the work you put into this show/movie that I enjoy".

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not who you were responding to, but:
I think there's quite a bit of difference between "I chose to identify with this fictional character." and "Thanks for keeping the roads in good condition, so I can get back and forth to where I need to be. Thanks for taking care of crime in my area, so I don't have to feel like I'm in danger. Thanks for keeping shelves stocked so I can eat tonight."

I think there is a very disproportionate amount of attention given to the entertainment industry.

This. It's ridiculous and I never want to contribute to it. Even if you find a character deeply moving and have a life-changing experience because of them, IMO you should be lining up to meet the writers and directors, not the actors.

Actors can give great performances just like all other artists can make great works of art. And the success of the character does rely a lot on the talent of the actor to convey whatever.

AYRT

No one said they couldn't. But, in general, actors get way too much credit. Queueing up to touch their hand or get their signature is a little silly.

Emotionally it's the one that people connect with most. And so it's the one that you'd get the biggest kick out of meeting.

I'm not sure if I'd want to inflate the directors' egos with that, but I can dig wanting to meet a writer for that reason, and I think that might explain why OP doesn't have as many issues with getting book autographs. *shrug*

While I like meeting people in front of the camera (meeting one of my favorite singers was an utterly amazing experience), writers are really really fun to see live. I got to see Paul Cornell, who (among other things) wrote some of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who (Human Nature/The Family of Blood and Father's Day). He seemed genuinely touched when I told him how much Human Nature resonated with me and that the two parter was my favorite.

Writers come to some conventions and stuff. They might not be AS high profile, but it's totally fun to meet a good writer live. I've also seen Neil Gaiman (though I didn't get to meet him, just hear him talk) and I went to a talk/signing for Tamora Pierce years ago (2003 maybe?) and both of those experiences were excellent.

Yeah, because writers like say, Joss Whedon, don't get as much ridiculous ego-inflating feedback as it is. Poor writers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand Joss Whedon, but he's a rare exception.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What is stopping you from getting the road crew's autographs then?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing. But I really don't think anyone on Earth so special that I want to keep a piece of paper they wrote on.

I used to think this way, but then I realized how much I enjoy movies, and characters, and entertainment, and the escape those things allow me to have, and how much time I spend enjoying them. I'm not saying actors should be paid as much as doctors, but they do work hard and make sacrifices so that I can enjoy their shows or movies, and I can respect that and see nothing wrong with expressing it to them when I have the chance. It's not even so much that I think they're so much better than everyone else; I'm a thanker, I thank everyone because being appreciated is definitely a good feeling.

Emotional needs and physical needs are pretty equal for me, and entertainment is definitely a part of that. I'm a total escapist, though, and I realize that not everyone is.

The whole way you phrased this is exactly what I'm talking about. Referring to non-acting jobs as "menial" and "not affecting my life." Fixing someone's toilet is just as important as playing an angel on some silly-ass, poorly written TV show (just using Misha Collins as an example here because that's who was in the secret).

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Odd to be in fandom with that much of a negative attitude toward it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a negative attitude about fandom, I just dislike actor-worship.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in ABC town. Someone fixing a toilet in XYZville is not going to affect my life at all. This actor whose show is broadcast across the world, and therefore something that I can actually experience, now that means something to me, personally.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
XYZville has no toilets? XD

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but what about the person in ABC town who fixes your toilet?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Has nothing to do with the point I made, but you're free to get his autograph if that makes you feel better about the evils of celebrity.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying you don't thank janitors or custodians? Because that's just common courtesy. If you think what someone does is important, why don't you thank them?

I don't see it so much that stars are put on a pedestal as less glamorous jobs, especially minimum wage and "unskilled" jobs, are seen as beneath everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
How did you get "I don't thank janitors/custodians" from what I said? The fact that people with unskilled jobs work just as hard as actors was my entire point.

(For the record I do thank my office cleaning lady every time she empties my trash bin.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think I replied to the wrong comment, actually. Someone said something about not thanking people for the menial job that in no way affects them. Except I don't know of many workplaces, religious organizations, clubs, restaurants, or school systems that don't have some sort of cleaning staff, so there is someone who affects their life.

Fuck me.

I'd say fixing the toilet is more important. But that's just me.
