High five, OP, high five.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, OP. I've skipped out on more than one meet and greet just for that reason. But I recently met one of my other faves at another a meet and greet, and as embarrassed as part of me was to meet them as a fan, so much more of me was thinking, "But what if I never get this chance again?" The latter won out and, in retrospect, I'm glad of that.

Yes, you're a hypocrite. But you get points for recognizing and admitting it.

Autographed books/other works of the author are different somehow, IMO. But hey, meeting your favorite celeb is fun, I can't hold that against anyone, and autographs are sort of the general way to get a memento of that.

TBH I'm not sure I would want a picture with my favorite celebrity. I would be much too nervous and self-conscious to get any enjoyment out of it. Even if I didn't have my issues, I still don't think I'd want to pay for one.

There's nothing wrong with doing this if you respect the actors and are polite and everything, but it's not for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. I see videos on Youtube from SPN cons and I think they look like so much fun, but at the same time I have this fear of being lumped in with the crazy fans. On the other hand, meet and greets and cons seem like the perfect place to meet a celebrity because it would be less awkward and intrusive than approaching them randomly on the street. It's a lose/lose situation for me really. lol.

Sorry for the long comment, apparently I have ~feelings~ on the subject.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Meeting a celebrity always feels so...fake to me (not that I've met any). I'm sure they are nice, but in the back of my head I would always be thinking 'this is their job, they won't remember me five seconds from now'. Seems a bit hollow and empty to me, and a bit sad really. But that's just me, a lot of people enjoy it!

I see your point, OP. I only once met an actor I really like. I asked him for a signature because that's what you do, but I've barely looked at it since. It's just a scribble on a piece of paper. But I am happy that I have a picture with him and I'm definitely happy that I met him because I got to ask him a question about one of his movies. So I see the appeal for that, but not for saying hi and getting a signature.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of them most likely only do it because it's a part of their job, but I do think some actors/actresses genuinely enjoy their fans and are pleased to meet them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
My reason for not wanting to meet celebrities is very petty: I don't want them to think that I think they're better than me. I don't want them to get to experience me coming up to them and telling them I admire them, when there are millions of people who work just as hard at what they do and never get that kind of attention and recognition.

I find the concept of hero worship and putting someone you don't personally know on a pedestal to be creepy, in general. For fans and famous people, alike.

I totally know how the OP feels.

ia, OP. I'm always baffled by the people who shell out loads of cash for a 30 second meet and greet then awkward photograph with somebody. And just conventions in general (excluding stuff like ComicCon) I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i feel even stronger about this than you do. i think it's bizarre that such a thing even occurs.

Idk, I don't want to come off like sounding too much like a pathetic fangirl, but one of my favorite life experiences was seeing one of my favorite Japanese singers (Aso Natsuko) live. I got to sit up front for her two concerts, made an impression since I actually knew her songs (since this was in London), babbled some Japanese to her and took a picture with her (which is pretty much the holy grail in Japanese idol fandom; getting a picture with a singer is pretty hard to get) along with some autographs. It's not so much "I have this signed poster" it's more I have this memory of meeting one of my favorite people ever. I waxed poetic about the experience on my blog, but it's really an amazing one.

It might not be a big deal to you, and that's fine/great, but meeting one of my favorite celebrities was an utterly amazing experience.

The idea of intentionally meeting a celebrity - going to an autograph signing at a convention, stalking a set, whatever - is pretty embarrassing to me too, but I think it's at least in part because I've met so many of them while working as a bartender. Kind of turns the usual celebrity-fan dynamic on end - I'm used to them trying to get my attention. I think it would feel weird to me for it to be the other way around.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the idea of autographs, either, or really want one, but I do think that it's a way of creating an acceptable, quick-to-end relationship between a fan and a celebrity. Sure, there are some fans who can just say, "hey, I think you're really cool" and leave the celebrity alone, but there's so many crazies that an autograph is very much a ritual that benefits the celebrity. Some writable surface is provided by fan or celebrity, small talk ensues while the celeb signs it, and, because the fan is given a gift in the form of an autograph, the celebrity doesn't have to feel bad about sending the fan on their way when the signing is done.

So, while an autograph has no meaning to me, if it would make a celebrity more comfortable, I wouldn't not do it.

I'm the same. Unfortunately, I found this out during a con. That kind of sucked.

I can't really relate to this. I've wanted to go to a con for as long as I've known of their existence. Sometimes I get a bit of second-hand embarrassment(SPN cons are pretty bad) from the vids, and I hate being lumped together as one big group of crazy fans, but for all the shows I'd want to go to, I know the actors really enjoy their work and they enjoy the fans, and I'd like to add my voice to the thousands saying that they're awesome. So if I ever get the shot, I'm taking it.

This is me too, though I'm not that excited about book signings.

I don't really do hero-worship, and to want to meet actors would make it about me-and-them, when really, I'm more into the projection, the entertainment, the fantasy of it all, larger than life. Whereas they're just a person, a talented person.

Urk, reminds me of the famous people I've met and how I've said embarrassing things...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I've met a few of my favorite celebrities, but I'm always super super paranoid about respecting their space and making sure I don't come across as "one of those people" because I would absolutely die if they thought I was too fangirly. There's a fine line to walk when meeting one, and I think they can always tell the difference between the ones that want to tear their kidneys out and keep them in a jar under their pillow, versus the ones that have respect and admiration for them. Recognizing the creepy fangirl/boy behavior is a great sign, OP. I think you're in the green.

As someone who's met and had positive experiences with...like, every actor I like, I find it's all about timing and demeanor. If it's something like a premiere or a convention, that's what they're for; I don't feel bad taking/asking for a photo. (I'm kinda over the autograph thing, though I've done it.) But I'm always, always extremely polite and calm and usually kinda jokey, and I find they really appreciate that, unsurprisingly, and it makes the experience far better and more fun. And if it's not a sanctioned event and I just run into someone randomly, as I have done a few times, I might briefly say hello & that I like their work, but that's it. Who doesn't like to hear that they're appreciated? I guess they don't have to be nice to you, but I lose respect for celebs who have no interest in or are rude to their fans--their polite fans, that is. If some crazy stalker turns up in their hotel room, they certainly have a right to be mad. But let's face it, fans are the employers. I think the celebs should be moderately gracious where possible. I think if it's done with dignity then everyone's happy, fan & celeb alike. Buuuuut that's just me.

I always worry about coming across as too much of a fangirl and making them feel awkward. I mean, on one hand I'm definitely loved getting my pic taken with favorite authors, and with some of my favorite actors (I have several pics from when I was a kid with various ST actors because Mom took me to ST cons) -- but I think I'm generally more interested in talking to people I admire. I went to the local SFF con and a friend of mine who knows a bunch of the authors got me in to talk to some of the people whose work I liked, and getting to talk to them about their work was amazing.
