Should I bother watching Thor and Captain America? Just wondering.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
... it probably totally depends on how much you can handle certain personality types...

Thor was pretty good I thought. Plenty of Loki / Thor interaction and some pretty CGI. The love story's a bit irritating, but learning more about Loki's motivations and personality, and the way Thor grows up a bit makes it worth it.

Capt America I found dull. If you really, really liked him in Avengers then you'll probably get more mileage out of the film than I did. It's a well-made film, don't get me wrong. It's just...yeah. The character does nothing for me.

Captain America is excellent, definitely worth watching. Unless you really dislike Steve for some reason, you'll most likely enjoy it a lot; the character development is pretty great, and it's a really well-done movie.

Thor... has a lot of relevant backstory for the Avengers. I'd suggest seeing it for that reason alone -- and pretty much only that reason. It's the weakest of the MCU movies, imo. Thor's character development, the development of Jane and the other humans, and the romance, are all really rushed and feel kind of forced. Loki was really the only interesting thing about the movie, and I'm not a Loki fangirl.

I think they're both pretty fun movies, all things considered. Not the greatest, but if you dig Avengers and you like fun superhero movies, there are much worse movies out there. Thor doesn't have the greatest reviews but I think it's a lot of fun and is definitely enjoyable.

I love how the two substantive comments on this thread give you the exact opposite opinions :D

Personally, I thought they were both highly enjoyable, but not as good as The Avengers or Iron Man.

And it just got more divisive from there! xD

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but I found them enjoyable for different reasons. Thor I thought wasn't great as a movie, but it was fun to watch, and fun to see Asgard on screen. I found the asgard-side of the movie to be much more interesting than the human-side, but I think that's mostly because I really didn't like Natalie Portman's character (I don't think she was badly done or anything, she just didn't gel with me). I'd watch it again when in a mood for watching hot guys break things and be badass.

Captain America, I was impressed with the visuals and some of the acting (rare for a superhero movie) but it is very history-centric and not as much capital-F Fun. If WWII action isn't your thing you'll probably be bored, and you do have to love Cap to really enjoy it. If you want more backstory relevant to Avengers, and wanted to meet Howard Stark, then definitely watch it. I'd watch it again when I wanted a superhero movie with an actual story, and didn't feel like seeing Iron Man again.

CA SPOILERS AHEAD

I did have some big problems with the end of Cap - I felt like where we (the viewers) left him at the end of his movie and where we met him in Avengers was a big important gap that we should have seen, and his and Peggy's story wasn't as resolved as I wanted it to be. I wanted at least a mention of whether she was alive or not, and what happened to her, and Steve's reaction. I would have absolutely LOVED a scene between old, I've-lived-an-amazing-wonderful-life Peggy and a newly thawed, bewildered Steve. I also wanted to see more of Steve's acclimation to the 21st century. But maybe that's what Movie II will cover.

I found Captain America ridiculously boring. I feel asleep twice while trying to watch it. Thor was ok, I liked the side characters.

Captain America is awesome. Thor is a total snooze-fest.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you liked Loki and Thor in Avengers, watch Thor. It also introduces Selvig.

Captain America is heavier on the history and less on the superhero aspects, but it's backstory for Steve (whom I consider to be the purest form of superhero, and the movie explains a bit why he's so idolized in Avengers) as well as containing Howard Stark and the Tesseract.

Both movies are worth watching if only because they explain some things about the Avengers that were otherwise not touched on. I also think they're both worthwhile movies on their own merits, although--as others pointed out--Thor seems a bit rushed at points and Captain America can be dull if you don't like the history aspects.

I like them both, for different reasons. Thor felt more substantive from a fandom perspective. It laid down some interesting characters and relationships, started the plot that would be used in The Avengers(Loki and his quest for power), and had some really, really good moments for Thor and Loki. And it gave me the one ship I actively ship in the MMU, Clint/Darcy, so I like it for that reason alone.

Captain America, on the other hand, I felt had more for the general population. It was a good story and had interesting characters and IMHO Chris knocked it out of the park. There was great Cap backstory and I loved it for that reason alone, but if you're not a huge Cap fangirl/boy then it might be a bit boring. I liked it, either way, and I think both are worth the time.

Hopefully this is a little helpful. I can't help but lol at the huge divide between opinions here. XD

Captain America is my favorite of all of the recent movies, and Thor was decent fun. :)

miiiiild spoilers? like, nothing specific, but more the character arcs/theme of the movies

Honestly? They're both kind of cliché formulaic.

Thor is more fantasy, while Captain America is typical action movie fare.

Where both stories shine, is in the characters and their relationships.

Captain America is a goody two-shoes who goes through rough times but who is incorruptible. The whole movie is about him triumphing against evil and making friends who accept him. AND WAR AGAINST THE NAZIS RAWR.

Thor is arrogant, but kindhearted. He does not realize that his actions have consequences for the people he cares about, and the whole movies is about him learning humility and true inner strength (as opposed to beating the crap out of everything to solve issues).

Thor focuses more on Thor's family and Thor's relationship with the love interest.

So it depends on what kind of escapism is more your thing. :P

I personally loved Captain America and found Thor numbingly predictable, but I enjoyed both and don't regret watching either.

What really ruined Thor for me, was the scenery. The buildings in Asgard were so obviously impossible in real life, that I could never forget that I was watching a movie with fake background.

It was easier for me to suspend my disbelief for Captain America, because it took place in Earth.

IMO both were boring as hell. The only good thing about both were the buff, blonde hunks.
