I never knew this was a problem? I've seen so many non-anime characters at conventions that I don't even think about it (except for that one really awesome Fifth Element cosplay, wish I'd gotten a pic :( )

wow ur such a rebel :o

Man, I almost got around to preparing to cosplay Razer from Green Lantern TAS at Youmacon later this year.

But then I realized I wouldn't have enough money in time for both the con and costume. D; Someday, though!

Anyhow, I think it's cool to see non-anime characters. I've seen TF2 characters at various places, which makes me laugh. Love it.

I don't think I've ever seen someone have a hissy fit over that...but what I don't get is the people who freak out if *your* costume doesn't match *their* standards. : /

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to Anime North this year and a couple of the best cosplays I saw were a Harley Quinn and a Jafar. There was also a Slash (like from Guns and Roses) walking around. I had no problem with it at all, same as I have no problem with people who don't wear any costumes at all.

I don't understand why people would be angry over this at all; it seems like such a non-issue. If anything non anime characters would create more variety which to me = more fun! At least in this case.

But I also don't understand why 'half your reason' to do it would be to piss people off. (You might've been joking, but this is f!secrets so maybe not, too.)

..Except I don't think anyone actually cares.

Yeah, I wasn't aware this was a problem either. I was totally going to cosplay as Pinkie Pie or a genderbent Sherlock at Animinneapolis this year until it conflicted with my summer job.

Conventions are usually just fun places to go with friends, OP. I really don't know how you met people who are so serious and exclusive about their cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people really care that much? One year I was at an anime con and someone was dressed as Jesus Christ. Complete with huge cross he was lugging around. Seemed like everyone who saw him thought it was pretty cool. I'm sure I've seen other non-anime cosplays and no one seemed to be freaking out, but Jesus is the first one that comes to mind.

This is a problem?

Dude, I love that anime cons are becoming more generalized-nerd-cons. I don't have any access to non-anime conventions, and there are a lot of anime that I really have no interest in (up to and including many popular anime that 90% of the merch comprises of), so seeing general nerdiness being celebrated is a huge plus.

I remember not long after Kingdom Hearts came out hearing "JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE IN KINGDOM HEARTS DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN GO TO CONS DRESSED AS DISNEY CHARACTERS!!!" and similar things.

Sounded like an oil tanker full of "Stop having fun guys!" I didn't understand what the big deal was at the time, and I still don't get it.

That's pretty hardcore, OP.

Seriously though, people actually have issues with that...? That's a thing? I see non-anime characters at cons all the time.

Hahah a friend of mine was one of those. Would rage if you cosplayed a video game character, even a JRPG character. Double rage at Harry Potter cosplayers. "That's what Comic Con/E3 is for !!!!"

I never really understood.

the number of haters is much smaller than you think it is, OP. Nobody cares.

unless it's a regional thing and cons here in the midwest are just entirely laid-back/don't care about it at all. I've never encountered the whole non-anime thing anywhere around here.

Anon, I used to work at cons. Trust me, the people who overreact about that kind of thing are going to find something that "ruins the whole convention" at every convention they go to. Nothing will ever make them happy when they can bitch instead.

So...actually, keep doing it. Listening to them kvetch was entertaining. And it keeps their ire drawn off other stuff, like whether or not we have their stuff in stock or we're charging more than they think the damn comic is worse.

Hell, I call manga "Japanese comics" (If they're from Japan) or just "comics" or "graphic novels" just to screw with people at cons. "THEY'RE MANGA" "Doesn't manga translate to something like 'comic book' anyway?" "RAGE RAGE RAGE" Boom, a ten hour shift just flies by.

I think people don't really care anymore about people doing non-anime cosplay to anime cons. When I went to AnimeNEXT this past June, most of the cosplayers were My Little Pony, Marvel, Adventure Time, or Homestuck, actually! Even though I mostly go to anime cons, my most popular costumes have been the Tenth Doctor and Pinkie Pie, and I've never gotten crap for wearing them.

Have people actually confronted you or like, side-eyed you for this? weird.
I always figured it was do what you want thing, like If someone went to comic con dressed as a digimon character no one would care either.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I used to rage at non-anime cosplayers (on the inside) but I don't remember why. I was a very silly child.

Even "Anime Conventions" have panels and guests and venders about things other than anime and manga. The focus might be anime, but all fandoms are welcome.
Take "Anime Boston" for example. Minecraft cosplays. Oodles of Homestuck cosplays. Steampunk galore. Stormtroopers. A Portal booth. Harry Potter characters running around. Spike holding a puppet Spike. Mostly Anime panels, but all kinds of stuff for all kinds of interest.

[personal profile] rbhudson 2012-07-18 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Is this really a problem? Because I plan on dressing as Harley Quinn to a video game, anime and sci-fi convention.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-18 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't normally care about things like this, but I do remember one anime convention where there were so many non-Japanese media cosplayers and caterings that it might as well have been a different kind of convention. If I wanted to go to Comic-Con, I'd have gone to that. There were barely any panels that catered to anime interests, and that kind of made me feel cheated. I basically paid money to not understand any jokes or references at the con.

So yeah. Don't care if you cosplay other things as long as it actually stays an ANIME CONVENTION, not just a convention with some anime in there.
