Something almost just like this happened with a fic I read in my fandom, but I doubt it's the same thing because that fandom hasn't really decresed in popularity.

Anyway, for one thing, I don't get why you're blaming social justice. What you described doesn't sound like it has anything to do with that, unless you left something out like you were using slurs in your fic or something. And what sounds like what happened is your fic got linked somewhere.

This.

It could be because sjws decided that something in the fic [which may, or may not actually be there, or be as problematic as the OP said they were making it out to be] was offensive and started dogpiling. If that's the reason then I can't really blame OP for blaming social justice.

Of course, that's just an idea, who knows if that's what happened.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more likely you just pissed someone off who was petty enough to link-spam your work. Blaming social justice that you got caught basically confirms whatever you wrote really was that bad. You should be angered at yourself for not being smart enough to take it down in all these years, not clinging to poor excuses.

Or that SJW's are that shit. I for one hope OP makes a sequel. because pissing you off is always the better option.

I'm not sure it does. OP could be saying something more like "people used to generally be chill and now they're not." But yeah, it does make me wonder what exactly was in the parody.

I can't speak to any other groups, but for the two I'm a member of, OP:

I wouldn't care if you exaggerate a queer character. I don't tend to agree with the people who think that certain representations are untrue to real gayness. But if you made a gay character stupid and not others, that might bug me, yeah.

I wouldn't care if you used ableist language either. I don't care if you call something "lame" or call someone "crazy" But if you made fun of someone for using assistive technology, or mocked a speech impediment, or made the character with mental illness the butt of all the jokes, or something like that, it might bother me.

I wouldn't care if you used gendered slurs, like "bitch" or "slut" or "cunt." I would care if you portrayed a female character as stupid or worthy of mockery if you didn't write men the same.

I can't speak to other axes of oppression really, but I think you'll see a trend in my responses: some things, I do find to be a bit overboard. But others, yeah, I'm not so gung-ho about.

So the question that arises in my mind is, is someone raggin' endlessly on you for calling someone "lame," or is it something bigger?

Either way... if it's an endless stream of complaint from people who don't listen to a reasoned "I can see why that bothers you, but I choose not to take the fic down," then they're probably overstepping no matter what.

And it sucks if they've suddenly appeared after years and won't shut up, too. That's not helpful, even if your fic is completely horrifyingly gross.

I think all those things depend on what kind of parody it is. If it's a parody of the way fandom treats the characters and you have fandom normally writing a female character of as the 'stupid chick who can't do anything by herself' and the author would have taken that and blown it out of proportion to show how stupid it is.

By that I only want to say it really all depends on what OP wanted to portray, on the fandom at the time etc.

But yeah in general I agree with you, sometimes there are just things you can't ignore.

Without knowing the story in question, or what the haters are hating on, it's difficult to say.

But imo humor is trickier to write than other genres, I think, precisely because it's more subjective than, say, romance or angst. ~ If you're really bothered, put a disclaimer/exclamation at both ends of the fic - because unfortunately, some readers miss the point unless it has Giant Yellow Sparkly Letters spelling everything out.

(And seriously: if you enjoy writing humor/parody - don't let poo-poo-heads ruin your fun.)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm seriously wondering what kind of horrible shit you wrote to actually be blaming "fandom Social Justice".

Oh yes, there's such a conspiracy against straight whites. Isn't backlash fun?

I think what bothers me the most is that the fic is six years old. It's like, you use one term incorrectly and that's it, you're considered evil for life and are never allowed to be able to move past it.

I'd wonder more about what's so horrible about the fic, but considering the state of "social justice" online nowadays, I'm side-eyeing the angry comments more. Especially because they're suddenly going after a six year old fic.

I could see it happening. Then again I could see a number of things happening. Context is important here. Although now I'm tempted to look up my old crap to see if it still exists.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, even if there genuinly is something 'wrong' with what you wrote from a social justice perspective - it's a parody fic that's *six years old* and that you (apparently) haven't been broadcasting recently. Seriously, do these people have nothing better to do?! They can't possibly think this is constructive behaviour.

I feel like there has to be more to this story. Something weird must have happened for this fic to suddenly attract renewed attention after six years. And I have a hard time believing that something minor in the fic would spur such a major overreaction after such a long time unless there was something else going on, like grudgewank.

I'm also curious about what, exactly, is in this fic that people are complaining about.

There's no excuse to harass someone over a fic, and the reviews sound like they're crossing the line.

But I'm also not ready to agree that this is simply a case of fandom SJ going awry. Dogpiling has definitely happened, but it seems unusual that it would suddenly happen in an inactive fandom six years after the fic was written.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
This. No offense, OP, but from the sound of your secret, your fic was well-received, but not insanely popular, right?

Only the "jewels" of the fandom would remain after six years. Really, six years is a long, long time in fandom time.

It's very suspect.

I don't know if there is a tool for this, but I very strongly suggest that you look into something that helps you find out what site or sites the inbounds to your fic is coming from.

Someone above said that it was probably being link-spammed around by someone with a grudge — find out if this is true.

Also, the damage is done already, but stop replying to the haters. It won't stop them and it will only make you feel more frustrated and helpless. :( Block them and delete their comments, if this is possible.

If they insist, report them for harassment.

It's actually not *that* unbelievable that something from years ago would still be getting seen. I know I've read stuff from years ago [in, yes, inactive fandoms] because I'd just discovered the show and what-not, and I know I'm not the only one who does that.

So I don't think it's completely out of the question that a sjw may have stumbled on the OP's fic, took offense to something [regardless of it was really problematic or not], and posted the link somewhere because of that. Lord knows weirder things have happened.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I can totally relate to this. My parody's always get nice reviews at first but give them a year to stew and all the trolls come a-running. Anon, you are not alone. Just people tend to get very easily offended by parody's...I see it everywhere. Unless the fact it's a joke is hammered in, people will always think you genuinely hate the show/book/movie. Grrrr...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Late to this but to the OP: humor/comedy is a very fluid and changeable thing. What might have been considered funny a few years ago might now be seen as offensive and vice versa and it's a fine line between one and the other. That said, it only takes one person to find something offensive about a piece of parody and then share that opinion with others for it to be continually referred to in that manner.
