Wait, Twilight is about Mormons...? I thought it was about vampires...? Or are the vampires Mormon...?

SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The author is Mormon and the whole series is a huge piece of propaganda for Mormon values.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The author of Twilight is Mormon (or raised Mormon, I forget if she still identifies as) and if you look at it through that lens it actually has a lot of Mormon ideas and themes within the story.

Stephenie Meyer is Mormon, and I'm reasonably certain it's very, VERY heavily influenced the happenings in the series.

I think. Someone with more knowledge of the series might be better suited to answer this. I pussied out three chapters into the second book. xD

SMeyer is Mormon. Things really make sense in the books once you know what everything's about. I'm not an expert though so there might be some mistakes.

For example:
• No premarital sex.
• Bella leaving her dad to go live with the Cullens after marriage. (Once a girl marries, she leaves her family so she can be with the husband's family.)
• Vampires are beautiful, gorgeous and amazingly white. People who turn into vampires get whiter skin in the books; I think there were POC in the movies. (Mormons believe that only white people go to Heaven, because they're "pure" and therefore perfect. Darker skin means you're dirty and a sinner. If you're black, sucks to be you.)
• There's no logical reason as to why Bella gets pregnant, until you remember that SMeyer is Mormon. (If you're a woman, you need to give birth so you can get access to Heaven. I think? Or was it that you don't get to see your family and loved ones in heaven if you don't have kids? My details are a little fuzzy on this one. But basically to be a perfect woman, you need to give birth.)
• The "vegetarian" vampires. (No scary stories for Mormons, y'all.)
• Jacob falls in love with a baby. (SMeyer herself was "introduced" to her husband when she was 4-years-old.)

There were other things, but atm these are the ones that come to mind.

Don't forget that in Eclipse when Bella wants to have sex but Edward refuses, he says his reasons are "because I want to keep you pure".

Mormons believe that only white people go to Heaven, because they're "pure" and therefore perfect

of all the freaky shit i've heard about this religion, i did NOT know that

*off to share the info with my bff whose daughter-in-law, and therefore grandson, recently decided they are mormons*

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you haven't heard it before, it's because it's not true.

I've been attending the LDS church for 26 years; you'd think if this were something we believe, somebody would've mentioned it to me before.

true or not, it wouldn't even make the top of the list as to why i find the whole religion distasteful

It's been known for a while

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't until the mid eighties that the Mormon church had to rescind the rule. You had a lot of Mormons in the West Indies trying to convert people of colour saying that they'd serve whites whilst in heaven. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that they believed that black people wouldn't go to heaven, but that they would go to heaven as a servant and have to be reborn...or something.

Petersen said, "If that negro is faithful all his days, he can and will enter the Celestial Kingdom. He will go there as a servant, but he will get celestial glory."

They believed that the black skin was a mark of sin from god and that's why blacks were slaves and servants and weren't allowed the priesthood until 1978.

OH WELL THAT'S OK THEN

...i'm lying

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I find this really interesting because my grandmother is southern Baptist and she used to spew a bunch of shit about how God didn't like black people, so that's why he made them black with a "mark of sin" or something. I always wondered where she got that, because I don't -think- it's in the Bible anywhere. Just goes to show that people are prone to use religion to back up whatever fucked up, ridiculous beliefs they have.

I've been told that they also believe that, if they repent, they become white.

not sure how accurate this is since i heard it on /r/atheism

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight is truly, truly terrible for a lot of reasons beyond the ones you listed here, but not all of the items you listed are Mormon beliefs. Neither race nor sex any bearing on your standing before God; the LDS scriptures specifically state that ALL people are alike unto Him and are invited to come unto Him and partake of all the blessings He offers.

2 Nephi 26:33: "For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile."

I remember being told by an older Mormon that they were taught that if a POC repented of their sins God would take away their burden and they would be white in heaven. This was just one guy but when I checked it out online I found quite a few things like this
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/faithbased/2012/03/mormon_church_and_racism_a_new_controversy_about_old_teachings_.html

I'm willing to accept that Mormonism has radically altered their stance recently but there seems to have been at least a history of racism in Mormonism.

"introduced to her husband when she was 4 years old"

WAT

can we maybe get a little more exposition on this?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is ridiculous. Meeting the person you're going to marry at age four is not horrific, it's a cute story. There is absolutely no evidence anywhere that says that Stephenie Meyer was betrothed from childhood, which id what this is implying. From what I've heard she dated around during college and even apparently got engaged a bunch of times to different guys before settling on the one she's married to now.

I've said it before, I'll say again: there are quite enough horrible things going on in Twilight that you don't need to start making stuff up.

You forgot Renesmee's name.

seconding the wtf at

"• Jacob falls in love with a baby. (SMeyer herself was "introduced" to her husband when she was 4-years-old.)"

This actually explains so much about her and why her brother/editor/manager? keeps ~negative~ fanmail away from her and basically shields her forever

holy fuck the whole family/community is in on it D: D: D: D: D:

The first of a series of posts about LDS and Twilight: http://stoney321.livejournal.com/317176.html

Written by a former Mormon and she breaks it all down. Some of it is reaching, but most of it makes complete sense.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually one of the first posts I saw that made me start to question everything. Originally, I just meant to find anti-Twilight stuff because I was tired of the series and its bad writing — I was breaking away from being a minor fan. I didn't mean to stumble on the critiques of Mormonism in the process — it just happened.
