I have a hard time shipping them because their friendship doesn't seem that way to me. But I'll admit to occasionally, in the dark of night, reading Abed/Troy/Annie fic.

Could another reason be that they are in a comedy? Comedies have a tendency to get less slash fiction than dramas. I don't know what it is about dramas that brings out the hot and heavy in fanfic writers though but it does.

It's because they are absolutely perfect the way they are. Their relationship is golden. They need no fic to expand or change or indulge, all you have to do is watch the show and bask.

I love Troy and Abed, and Troy/Abed, and Troy/Abed/Annie, and Troy/Abed/Annie/Britta.

I just don't really feel the overwhelming urge to write fic for community because so much of that show is fulfilling my desires right there on screen.

Thingswithwings has written some beautiful Troy/Abed fic: http://archiveofourown.org/users/thingswithwings/pseuds/thingswithwings/works?fandom_id=39628

Idk why but I simply can't ship them. Their broship is tooo perfect to be romantic. Also they have more funny than dramatic/shippy scenes...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit surprised to hear that; for some reason I was under the impression that Community fandom was full of shippers for this pairing

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just very, very hard to write Abed well, honestly. So I'm kind of glad people have held back.

I can't ship them romantically because their relationship and interaction is SO much like the one between me and my best friend that I'm just... completely unable to read sexual attraction into it. It would feel incestuous.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-14 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If it was just this pairing I would disagree (it's a comedy show, their dynamic is tricky, it's hard to write Abed, etc.) but over time and fandoms I can't help but notice a disturbing trend. Plus I still haven't gotten over the lack of Tony Stark/James Rhodes which no one has ever adequately explained to me. Fandom ships a crazy amount of white guys with way less chemistry than those two.

Lbr, when it comes to fandom it's all about white cock (Unless it's a j-fandom or the like. Altgough I've even encountered people who are convinced their favorite anime bishounen is meant to be caucasian, lol.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Troy and Abed, and can imagine writing slash for them. Except they seem so young to me. I'm sure this has a lot more to do with me than them. But I just can't imagine writing about them having sex. It feels creepy. But again, I'm sure that's because I'm so much older than they are. Does that even make sense?

They are my OTP, so in that way, I totally agree with you that I don't know why more people aren't shipping them (also that they are very pretty!). However, I do kind of know why, Part of it is that in general, sitcom shipping does tend to go to het. Another is probably the reason you mentioned involving race unfortunately. There is no denying that a lot of the super popular slash ships out there are between two white dudes, baring a few anime ones.

People get drawn into fandoms all of the time with the promise of a good slash ship, a good example of this being the recent popularity explosion of Teen Wolf, mostly from Sterek fans. That really hasn't happened with Community, and I think those two reasons are part of it. Slashers are generally more drawn to dramas and white dudes. Also, Community is just a weird as fuck show, so not many people are drawn to it in general.

At the very least, I'd say about 90% of the fic and fanart out there for them is pretty good, and I've met so many lovely people in this ship. I'm happy that at least we aren't too wanky, even if we are small!

I'm so conflicted with this pairing! I also ship them with other people, for example, and while I ship them as well I guess I find it kind of hard to imagine them doing anything particularly overt like hardcore makeout times because they seem so sort of... I don't know. Childlike? Kind of? Also there tends to be more fanfiction for shows that have been seen as dissastisfying for the viewers, ship-wise, and like one of the above comments said they are perfect how they are...??
I don't know I hardly read fanfiction these days this comment is a mess.
Basically I ship them and other things but I dont really need fanfiction for them. I am kind of surprised that there isn't much fic though.
Edit: I would totally be interested in reading potentially angsty or sweet fic about them just having little moments of being adorable or uncomfortable because unrequited angst is my jam yo

Oh, they are so very shippy. Troy's comment about having Abed's babies? Presh.

I dunno about anyone else, but to me, there's almost no room to put a fanon ship in. Everything about the two of them is done absolutely perfectly, I can't really imagine what fic could add.

Although between the Pillows and Blankets war and the end of season three...yeah, there could be some angst to be had. I just don't like imagining them angsty together (and I like my angst fic).

They are so so so very pretty, though. Anyone else occasionally get distracted from what's going on in a scene by just how gorgeous Donald Glover is? With the eyes and the smile and...what was I saying again?

I love the bromance. But I feel like the show gives you a LOT with them. I don't feel the need to read fic to get MORE!!!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. When I've been in fandoms where my biracial OTP was ignored, I was like: WTF FANDOM!!? THEIR LOVE IS SO CANON! but it could be other issues. One part of one of my mixed race OTPs was married, for instance, so I can (now) see why fandom would hesitate to ship him outside of his marriage. In this case, Donald Glover is handsome as hell but Troy & Abed are so childlike, I can see where it'd be tough for someone to think of them as anything but totally platonic (and unromantic).

Buuut, damn is it disappointing going to fandom and finding a dry spell of your preferred pairing (heyyyy, Shirley/Jeff..no, really, Shirley/Jeff..Foosball convinced me and I'm now a shipper).

Personally, there's something so child-like and innocent about their friendship that I actually kind of shudder at the thought of reading or writing porn about them.

Wouldn't have any kind of problem reading Donald/Danny RPF however.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2012-08-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
While I do think that race plays a notable part in a lot of shipping dynamics and probably has an effect on Troy/Abed, I don't think that's as much the case here as it would seem at first glace.

As someone who ships them a LOT and has actually written a bit of fic for them, I feel that A) canon fulfills a lot of my Troy/Abed shipping needs, and B) Yeah, it really, really is hard to write Abed right. And to generally capture the tone of the show while also keeping things well characterized to any extent.

Plus, it's not like there's a pretty white boys slash pairing that's taking the attention -- Troy/Abed is by FAR the biggest (read: only) male slash pairing in the fandom. It just that the fandom skews very het with a bit of slash and femslash on the side, which tends to be true in a lot of sitcom fandoms, for whatever reason (see: Sheldon/Penny in BBT, Leslie/Ben in Parks and Rec).

And while Jeff/Britta and (mostly) Jeff/Annie do get the most fic, there's also a notable amount of het shipping with Troy and Abed (esp. Troy/Britta, Abed/Annie, and also Troy/Abed/Annie).

So, yeah. Not to say there isn't a racial element (for instance, why haven't bromance shippers flocked to the fandom?), but I think there are a lot of other factors at play here, too (part of the answer: bromance shippers tend to flock to genre dramas, not weird little sitcoms).

Don't have much to add to this secret except that Danny and Donald are gorgeous, but I just wanted to say that I LOVE that everyone had a rational, civil discussion about this secret instead of people flinging accusations or devolving into wank?

IDK, it's restored my faith a little bit. Way to go, anonyns!

my god I love them. I truly cannot decide whether I ship it like hell or just want them to stay beautiful BFFs forever. ♥

Though idk dude, are you not looking at AO3 for them? Cause I've seen fic around, and a lot was good (throw Annie in the mix and there's even more that's also quite good) but unfortunately this just isn't an incredibly fanfic-y fandom. Even back in the days when there was that legit sort of Jeff/Britta vs Jeff/Annie ship war, people just don't throw a lot of fic out there. I mean, it's out there, but I've been kind of spoiled by incredibly fic-heavy fandoms so when there's a lighter one like this you really notice. But in any case, as slash goes, this is the biggest pairing in the fandom by far - possibly the only one. So although the whole white-cock thing is sometimes a very reasonable complaint, I don't think it's the case here.

Eh, could be that, but they're also just generally kinda hard to write for/about--the show's so quick and clever and they have such distinct voices and all. Personally I adore them, but I wouldn't know where to begin writing fic, unless it was totally a comedy/parody.

I'm in a ridiculously good mood right now and I don't want to ruin it by digging through my very complicated Community shipping feels, but I'm just chiming in to say that Troy and Abed are such quality POC representation and that yeah, I think that you might unfortunately be on to something.

And yes, they're both absolutely fucking beautiful and I could honestly stare at them both all day. Absolutely gorgeous, oh my god.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-15 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I'd agree that there's relatively little fic for them, actually. 88 of 469 works on AO3 are tagged with Troy Barnes/Abed Nadir; 19% isn't a bad showing at all for a fandom with so many pairing possibilities. Jeff/Britta has 22 works, a quarter of the Troy/Abed amount (and almost equalled by the 20 Troy/Annie/Abed works), and Annie/Jeff has 103 works, which isn't that much more. I'm assuming that you're using 'relatively' to mean 'relative to this specific fandom', though, rather than 'relative to fandom in general'. In any case, I hope this is reassuring; I don't deny that non-white characters can be neglected in fandom, but it doesn't seem to me that the Community fandom is guilty of that. (Although admittedly I haven't been deeply involved in the Community fandom, so all I can offer are these statistics; others with more experience of the fandom will probably know more about it.)
