...But Doctor Who isn't a reboot...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's as much a reboot as the Star Trek reboot is, considering that in the interim he did some timey-wimey nonsense and changed some fundamental things about the universe...

Well, the difference is that Star Trek started over, and Doctor Who picked up later with basically the same continuity (if anything in the Whoniverse can be called continuity). It's not a do-over in the same sense that Batman Begins, Amazing Spider-Man, or even Star Trek are.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's arguable that it's basically the same continuity considering how much is different. :P Although it did overwrite Shalka which was iirc originally meant to be main continuity. But yeah Whoniverse continuity is special - by that same token it'd be silly to do a 'hard reboot' because why bother?

Most of the DCU reboots have had various levels of timey-wimey explanation, too, and various amounts of carryover of old continuity. And meanwhile you get fandoms (like Stargate) that start over with major changes and no explanation and nobody calls it a reboot, just a different canon. It all depends.

...come to think of it, why does nobody but me call MLP:FiM a reboot?

It sort of is.

It takes place in the same continuity as the original, but there's a decades-long gap, a completely new writing and film team, and a very new, modern-day view on the character.

For many people it was their first experience with Doctor Who. I'd consider that a reboot.

Perhaps it's just that I've always seen the term associated with continuity, in a "please re-install universe and reboot" kind of way.

Although now I've got an amusing image of rebooting one's audience.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'd consider a reboot something that goes back to the very beginning and retells the story. Like the Star Trek movie.

This is just..New Who, not really Reboot Who.

Well, some people don't equate continuity reboot with show reboot. It wasn't a continuity reboot, but it was a reboot of the show because it was like "okay, lets do everything with a new audience and new actors and new writers and production and aesthetics and stylistic choices and reintroduce everyone again with new stories, but let's keep the established continuity there in the background and in the characters' memories."

Might as well be. They made the Doctor younger (seriously he was over 1,000 when he was the Fourth Doctor), killed off his race, made the show more about romance, etc.

(seriously he was over 1,000 when he was the Fourth Doctor)

No. In "Ribos Operation", Romana says he's 759 (he himself says he's 754). I don't think 240+ years passed between that episode and "Logopolis", the 4th Doctor's last story.

I think the tv movie (which is four regenerations later) has him say he's over 1000 year old, but he also says he's half-Human, so...

His age has jumped all over the place in canon, though. Leading to the dictate that the Doctor always lies about his age.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's a reMOOT!

...I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I can tell it's not any part of growing older. I'm in my 50's and I know fans who are older and still love it and have that feeling.

It might be just the shine wearing off of stuff. I've been a fan of Star Trek since the very first show, but it lost something over the years. Next Generation brought it back some what; Deep Space Nine brought it all the way back. Yet it's been fading again. Oh, I've seen the latest movie and I like it and still looking forward to the sequel, but things do fade.

You'll find something new. Just keep an eye out and watch everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel OP. My best best suggestion is to leave yourself open to things your friends are giddy about, it might not be series anymore but other things can be awesome too! (I randomly started in on comics that way, after a period when I really not excited/interested in the things I used to be)

Also, maybe try to see if there is anything in your life right now that makes you feel down? it could be bleeding over into fandom too.

As you get older, the Same Old Same Old ... gets more and more boring.

As to why this is ~ I can only speak for myself. As time goes on (talking decades here) I think my standards became higher and higher (especially as I was exposed to truly, magnificent creative works) I've become far more impatient of spending/wasting time with the mediocre. I save praise for those things that I truly find exceptional.

So have faith. I think there'll still be things that will fill you with glee and squee and enthusiasm: they just might not be the same places/media where you found joy when you were younger.

I agree. Once you're familiar with the best of a genre, it becomes harder to be satisfied with just anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm exactly the same. Life is way too short. I seriously can't suspend my disbelief for most SFF these days (with very few exceptions)

I could have written this myself...

Well season 6 was awful, so that may have something to do with it.

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-08-23 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing has been the same for me since Tennant left, tbh. I was never an super fangirl or anything and I really like the old series as well. Just... I like Matt Smith and I think the show is still fun... the magic is just gone. Can't pinpoint it. It's not the same as it used to be. :\

When I started falling out of love with anime I felt the same way. But then I discovered Western TV series and now that's my addiction. Maybe you'll find your passion in a different medium too.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
+1, maybe anon just isn't watching the shows/movies that anon might be able to get excited about these days...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought this, until my boyfriend made me watch Farscape :) It was like waking up all over again, finding something I could love that way. Not involved in fandom any more though (got older, time commitments, etc), but I've gone back to reading in one of my old fandoms and it's not the same (canon expanded), but it's still good. Gives me hope I might find new things in the future to get excited about :)

that sucks. But I don't think your capacity for nerd-joy is dead, I'm sure it'll come back when you find a new thing that strikes just the right chord within you. Magic can't ALWAYS happen, right, or else it wouldn't be so special when it does. (The Avengers did this most recently for me)
