I recently watched my second and third episodes with them. It was the episodes The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone. Really had only Amy but I got Rory in the first episode I saw with them.

Anyway, I was a little... disappointed she chose to attempt to cheat on her fiancé right before her wedding night.

Also, what is up with every woman on the show falling in love with the Doctor (Except Donna)?

Anyway, I was a little... disappointed she chose to attempt to cheat on her fiancé right before her wedding night.

As was I. There was all sorts of debate about that after the episode aired, a lot of people were trying to justify Amy's actions with, "Well she was scared! She had cold feet about the wedding!" But to me none of that really justifies the fact that she tried to jump the Doctor right before her wedding night. She didn't just kiss him, she was trying to have sex with them. It really soured me on Amy for a while and it took me quite a bit of time to like Amy and Rory together.

Also, what is up with every woman on the show falling in love with the Doctor (Except Donna)?

Yeah the new series could stand to ease up on the romance angle every once in a while. Donna's story worked and I don't see why we can't have more companions like that. It's okay if a companion falls for the Doctor but it's nice to have a break from that for a series or two.

I understand getting cold feet but like you said, I don't let that excuse trying to sleep with someone else on her wedding night. I mean, it just isn't right. Also, the Doctor was very clearly not into it but she kept pushing and that was kind of skeevy to me. Also, let's be honest, if a man had attempted this on his wedding night he would most likely be the "villain" in a bad romcom or something. No one would sympathize with him.

Donna was my favorite companion specifically because she wasn't obsessed with the Doctor. She just thought of him as a good friend. Without the romance I felt that left a lot more room to focus on her as an individual. I felt they developed her a lot more in a shorter amount of time than a lot of the other companions.

But yeah, I agree. Romance is nice and I can understand people falling for the Doctor but it loses its impact after a while if everyone is doing it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree. I think people were making excuses for Amy because they wanted to like her character (she was still a fairly new companion at that point and Who fans tend to want to be attached to companions) which is fine, I just felt it needed to be acknowledged that what Amy did was completely wrong and there's no excuse for it.

I love Donna too. We got so much from her in so little time that it actually just made me crave more Donna. I still wish we would have gotten a Ten/Donna series 5 instead of the specials with the Doctor alone.

Romance with the Doctor also never ends well, I'm one of those people who can't get into shipping something if I know it's doomed so romance for the Doctor is not really something that draws me to Who.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-08 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wish we'd had Donna for longer too.

Same here! I just can't ship the Doctor with anyone human. Maybe if they were another Timelord, but even then I think another Timelord would just be an excuse for angst so they could kill that character off. I highly doubt they would introduce another Timelord as a stable and consistent character. (I'm not even going to get into the Master.)

But yeah, I'm not drawn to DW for the romance.

I'm just bored of young female modern-day-Earth companions in general. I wanna see more dude companions. Or old companions. Or companions from different time periods or planets.

SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THAT SERIES

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It is never as specifically addressed as it needed to be, but I am pretty sure the intention was that

SPOILERS SPOILERS REALLY ENORMOUS SPOILERS FOR THE SERIES

this is showing the disturbing effects of the crack in Amy's wall, which is erasing everyone in Amy's life as if they never existed, so she forgets the people in her life. Amy is forgetting Rory, and acting in a disturbing manner that disturbs the Doctor.

They didn't play this quite right, or explain it properly, but the Doctor is disturbed. I don't think they should have put it in if they couldn't do it properly, but I think this is what they were going for. Amy becomes less callous about Rory after the crack is dealt with.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Um but she wasn't forgetting Rory?

I get what you're saying that maybe her behavior was different because she didn't remember her family and huge chunks of her life were missing... but like you said the show really did not address that. For all we know that was just Amy being Amy.

But honestly Amy's characterization throughout her entire run is a mess, she's constantly having memories taken from her, or inserted, or she's not really there because she's a doppelganger... etc etc. I don't think we even know who Amy is.

See, that seems like a really good idea but it was portrayed very poorly if what you say is true.

While an audience isn't stupid and we don't like being talked down to we can't read minds so a writer does have to properly convey their ideas.

I'll take that as my personal head!canon so I can like her character more.

Thank you.

It's being spearheaded by Steven Moffatt, of course it was portrayed poorly.

Ahaha, all I hear about that guy is negativity. Does anybody like him anymore?

The fanboys on the big Gallifrey Base forum probably still like him, the ones who don't just complain for fun and/or bcos it isn't Old Who, that is. (But I've run screaming for the hills and won't come back.)

I have not heard of that place but you make it sound like a hive of evil.

Does this hive represent the majority of viewers?

Nope.

Or, at least, most people have a love-hate relationship with him. He's very good at a few tricks that get people hooked, and he's also a completely awful person.

Tbh, Moffat is pretty much a glorified troll who is paid to write fanfiction (seriously, everything he writes is fanfiction. Sherlock & Dr. Who and Jekyll. Coupling is literally just his life rewritten.). It's pretty impossible to actually completely like the guy, his whole thing is that he's a troll, and he's one of those racist, sexist ones too.

And this makes him different from JNT, how, exactly? /blasphemy-burn-the-heretic-etc

I see him as a lot like George Lucas. Has some great, compelling ideas as long as he has superiors to wipe off the stupid.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Were that Oswin were actually gay and not just I'm-Moffat-lololol-fancying-girls-is-a-phase!!!! so we could avoid awkward one-sided companion/Doctor romance for a bit.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm up for anything to avoid the perpetual companion->Doctor.

BTW, is Moffat still defending his writing as being 100% awesome even with rising criticism? Do you know?

Sorry, just wanted to point out that Moffat making a female character "gay" doesn't mean she won't end up wanting to fuck the Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's weird, but I identify as Bi and that line doesn't bother me on its own. I feel like it describes me. I go through phases. I'm not constantly 50/50 with men and women, I switch, and there are weeks where I wonder why I ever liked men, and women are all I can think of, but then I switch back and it's all about men and wow what was I thinking I need penis.

So the line isn't my issue, really, it's the fact that it comes from Moffat... who's got loads of other issues regarding women and such.

In Series 6, when she's kidnapped, over a commnication device (Doctor rigged it post-kidnapping to transmit her words to them so they could keep an eye on her health or something like that), it turns out the person she wants to rescue her is Rory. and later, when she was kidnapped and her child about to be taken, the story she tells is about Rory. Not the Doctor. She doesn't even mention the Doctor either time. When she's alone and scared, it's always Rory.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great. She grew out of it.

But she still had the, "I want to bang the Doctor phase." Why did she even have to through that phase to begin with?

Also doesn't excuse the almost-cheating. :/

I guess I just wish that I didn't have to go through crap to get to the good part.
