I don't watch the show, but I've been told that one of the reasons Wincest is so popular is that the writers keep killing off every woman who gets in the way of the brothers' relationship.

it's funny cos a lot of the people i know who ship it enjoy it because of its fucked-up-ness. i mean, i don't like the ones where it's all "whoa, you gave me a boner dude!" "whoa, you're super hot let's fuck bro!" fics where it's not really acknowledged what the brothers are to one another. the angst-fests where all the fucked-up shit is acknowledged? i'm so there. i'm not a fan of the dub-con/rape stuff so as long as it's two consenting adults i honestly don't see the issue. get over it.

Sometimes it's just the fetishization of incest though.

Anyway, I just started watching Supernatural recently and I still don't get the idea OR the appeal behind Wincest. (Or any kind of incest pairing, really.) It just weirds me out.

Eh, I'm okay with it in fic and such if it's actually portrayed as fucked up (because it is, but this isn't addressed in fic all that much) although I will admit that I am more willing to read it than any other slash ship in that fandom because I cannot stand Castiel. Personally, my favorite type of SPN fic is gen fic either before or just after their dad died that's full of man angst for one or both of them, preferably while on a hunt. Basically I like fic that's essentially the first couple of seasons of the show. Oop.

Yeah, usually fans decide their ships by the ritual casting of the runes, except, of course, the Teen Wolf fandom, which decides by peering through the smoke of a sacred fire on the full moon. What kind of new deviancy is this, choosing a ship because you think it's hot? Sacrilege! You let people start picking their ship-choosing methods willy-nilly, and we'll be in for another LoTR, where they decided ships by reading the entrails of BNFs.

I haven't watched much SPN, but when I ship incest pairings it's because I find the idea of what's normally a strong, nonsexualized bond become twisted and unsettling and dirtywrongbad, not just because the people involved are attractive. :/

I do get annoyed when fic tries to gloss over the taboo nature of incest pairings, though. I LIKE MY SHIPS FULL OF GUILT DAMNIT.

I...don't know. I'm really not a Wincester at all, but I get it--I mean, the nature of their jobs (lives, really), is so inherently lonely, and they've literally died for each other and been through shit that no normal person could possibly understand, and they're really isolated and always alone together and have all these issues with responsibility for one another...isn't it canon that they're actually soulmates? I don't think soulmate necessarily = romantic/sexual, but really, I see where the shippers are coming from.

Lots of canons that have interesting sibling interactions have smatterings of incest fans. The amout varies based on how popular the canon is, how developed the characters are, how attractive they are and so on - but Supernatural is far from the only thing to have a prevalent incest fandom.

Add to that the fact that they're the main characters, hot, and have an amazingly codependent relationship where their personalities and so on are basically wrapped up in each other, not to mention the show's recurring theme of family being everything - and yes, I can totally see where the Wincest is coming from.
