You are that prolific mediocre author. You're also that prolific shitty author. And that prolific awesome author. At the same time. It just depends on who's reading.

Haven't you ever bookmarked something, thinking it's the most amazing thing ever? Then you go back years later, and it's really not that good? It's still the same fic. Yet, the quality's changed without any alteration to the writing.

Someone's going to scroll thru fics and go "ugh!" every time your name appears. And someone else is going to squeal and show all their friends when they're done. You shouldn't worry about it too much. (I'm personally pleased at the thought my work drives someone up the wall. It's kinda like payback.)

You can't please everyone, but that's okay.

This is a good comment and you should feel good about it. +1

Yes! This is very true, and what a beautiful way of saying it. You can't ever please everyone nor should you spend your time trying to, so just do your best and hope it pleases someone. If it has, you've succeeded!

Agreed. You just can't please anyone, OP. But it's okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, now that's depressing.

"You are that prolific mediocre author. You're also that prolific shitty author. And that prolific awesome author. At the same time. It just depends on who's reading."

This. I remember wank about me some years back, complete with how bad my writing was, and just feeling completely crushed -- but there also have always been people who read me and appreciate my stuff. So... that's a reason to keep posting it, regardless.

Some people really are just good, some people really are just bad. But the vast majority of everything is a matter of taste and interest.

and I totally get the sentiment of getting some enjoyment from "the thought my work drives someone up the wall". especially in fandoms where fans seem to spend more time whining about the lack of fanworks than actually contributing to their production.

I know my work does. It's part of what inspires me to write my OTP and post the stories everywhere.

Your concern is probably justified.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Haha yes. There is ALWAYS someone like this in fandom, always.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
To an extent, popular writing also tends to be accessible writing, meaning it will appeal to a lower common denominator and is probably not going to be an arrangement of words and themes fit to make the angels weep. But there are different kinds of good and 'entertainingly good' is one of them. Don't sweat it if you're not elevating fanfic to an artform. There's nothing wrong with being an author people consider to be a fun read.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Way to tell the OP they're a shitty writer. Prolific /= shitty. There are some people who take three months to write what takes other people three days. The speed in which the work is done isn't necessarily connected to the quality of the work. Why is it being faster than other people is a good thing almost anywhere but in writing?

This 100%. Not sure why it matters, so long as you're enjoying yourself. And clearly, a good number of other people like it too. Measure in love, not hate.

Sometimes it's difficult to find even a mediocre writer in some fandoms, even more so depending on which characters or scenarios or ships you want to read about. So even if you feel your writing isn't great it still may be better than most in your fandom.

Though I think you should just go with what the first commenter said, it's probably more accurate. :)

On the off chance that you chose that pic because you write or know any Sakamichi no Apollon fic, could you link me to some? :3

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-10-12 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, first off, if you are getting recced at all you aren't mediocre. Most authors never get recced. It's an honor, so be honored.

Secondly, yes, there is a type of writer who mistakes ease of writing for inspiration and churns out fic after fic of poorly thought through, never edited, banal tripe. They are easily recognized by the fact that they proudly spam the hell out of their communities and archives, despite receiving few if any reviews. But the thing about them is they they don't bother to reflect or reread what they've written -- they are already on to writing the next bit. The most important thing to them is not the plot, but the word count.

So think: do you just write whatever comes off the top of your head, hoping it contains an interesting idea, and then publish as soon as you see a stopping point? Or do you actually plot your stories, write, then sit on what you write, go back, and then make an attempt to edit to improve what you've written. If you are doing the second, you are not one of the people you fear you are.

I know an earlier commenter said Kaoru but whats the character off?

Sakamichi no Apollon, I think.

Oh same, and I'm not even recced. I'm sure I'm /that fan/ for some people, but others enjoy my work and... I don't know, but I'm not going to stop writing and drawing the characters I love either. I just wish my fandom was bigger so that it'd be easier to avoid me.
lemiru: Heisuke didn't ask for this ([Flat - Blushu])

[personal profile] lemiru 2012-10-12 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the exact same fears, only concerning my fanart. There's barely anyone drawing for the same characters as I do, so I tend to turn up a lot more than I'd like to. It's silly, but I've started to leave out some tags on tumblr because of that sort of thing already...

all that to say: you're not alone. But hey, at least you get recced! So you must do something right for at least a few people. And if it's anon-fic, it probably means they really like the fic, regardless of the name behind it.
