hm.. I can totally understand that!! No fics? That's really sad! Which fandom is it? (if I'm allowed to ask)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker has actually doubted himself sometimes though. If you were right, those moments would cause a reality BSoD.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You have pretty much all your life to find that. I just hit 40 and I feel like I've only found (little by little) a set of friends from different places in the last 5 years or so...

There's been others, but people come and go, and long distance don't help, and even at work sometimes you find people you click with, though most of times you're relieved you don't have have to spend more time with them than working hours...
Really, never give up hope.
Good people you can get along with exist, they are out there. You just need to give people a chance. And also not stay stuck with others who might shoo away the nice ones.

That does annoy me, but to be honest, when I see it, 9 times out of 10 I attribute it to anglophile American nerds using slang terms picked up from Terry Pratchett, Dr Who, and QI. Because those slang terms are SO COOL and make you seem SO SOPHISTICATED, even though they clearly don't have any real command of them. You're absolutely right that it's extremely jarring. But I mean, seriously, you've never seen some American nerd using "bloody" or "arse" or something like that?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Supernatural, and one character calls Sam a moose all the time.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate that one. It literally takes me completely out of the story when they used obviously British phrases.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are called epithets.

And I just flat out refuse to read any fic that uses them. Unless there is a really, really good reason for it, the moment an author uses anything other than a character's name, I back button.

I mean, when there's so much fiction out there that I could be reading, I'm not going to waste time reading fiction that keeps irritating me. (I am a liiittle more lenient with fic for tiny fandoms or rarepairs, but not that much, TBH.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Using names never sounds stupid. There's always the pronouns option, but just be careful with those too so the reader knows who's who.

Anything is better than epitaphs. Anything.

LOL, I am like this. And then I go back under my lurking rock, scrolling down my flist until I feel brave enough to do a commenting spree again.

Gonna hold off on the meme though. Perhaps until the next one, or I'm a little more freed up at school.

If you really want to write, write and don't post it for now.

The sexism was in-setting though. Heller's writing was quite self-aware about depicting the sexist antics as pathetic/ridiculous/compensating for something and Aarfy as a complete horrifying monster, even if the sexist humor was as tasteless and black as all the other humor.

I gotta say though, I'm not sure the format of the book would work for a good film. Some of it would be awesome (like Clevinger's trial OMFG) but there's so much description and backstory that informs the characters' actions I feel like a lot would be lost. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the bigger question is does this mean Danny/Sam overall or Sam/Phantom vs. Sam/Fenton? I can see why they would hate someone if they only ship Sam with "the Ghost Boy" and not with 'normal' Danny.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've heard little hipsters say that stuff, but the point is, if the characters they are writing about don't speak like that it's completely jarring which completely escape me this very second dammit. Bloody is just one of the words but there are many more that aren't as obvious that are actually worse for me. Yes I'm whining, but it's a characterization issue for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but would somebody please name the book? I'm curious

I like that about Community. *sniffles*

The only time labels like that should be used is when the POV character or narrator doesn't know the character's name. And even then, sparingly. Things like, "The taxi driver", "the waiter", "the bank robber"--but when it's a named character, use their name.

Please. Please please please.

God bless Japan

Oh my god I am so happy this exists

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am honestly suprised.

Who wouldn't love a short, misogynistic, creepy jewish mommas boy.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Catch-22. Fairly iconic cover design, I guess most people thought it was clear.

It's a pretty good book! I would recommend it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not exactly worse than normal life if you know how to play your cards right and have no problems sacrificing human life in order to let witches become stronger and grant you better loot; Kyouko lived longer than any normal person by "playing the game": letting people kill themselves and become witch fodder, for example.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What didn't you like about it? I haven't seen it (although I'm sure I will when it inevitably airs on Masterpiece Theater) but I've always been interested in the different ways that play is interpreted.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah it's an issue either way

I'm just saying, I don't think it's all Brits doing it, it's probably some Americans too, which to me makes it even more annoying / infuriating. Because it's a conscious put-on instead of just obliviousness about slang.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They did Henry IV, right? What did you think of that one?

I know what you mean. I actually don't have a problem with characters having very few flaws and actually being extremely morally sound and trustworthy, but I hate it when they do have flaws and they're treated like paragons anyway. And with Cap it happens disappointingly often in the comics, (although I'm a little curious if you mean the movies because fans don't treat movie!Steve as infallible in my experience).

This happens to Superman a lot too, btw. It's, like, implied that everything he does is perfect and moral and pure, which would be fine if it was, because Superman is just a really nice guy with no bad impulses and I don't care if he is basically perfect, but if he isn't, and is still treated as such, it's ten times worse than if he did the same thing and it was actually treated as a bad thing.

Can you give us a reason why you don't like it?

Even so, ending friendships over who they ship is really stupid.
