Do you really expect them to be able to write 4-5 new songs per episode? Hell, at least the actors have to be able to sing a bit - that's more talent than a lot of high-school shows have.

They write an entire script for each episode. Would it hurt to hire another writer to help write original songs?

Though they aren't going to do that. Most of the fun is watching to hear band covers. The producers know that. So, covers it is.

Logically, they could focus LESS on the songs, maybe one or two per episode, and focus on PLOT.

And this is coming from someone who identifies as a 'gleek'

*shrugs* Jem and the Holograms wrote that much per episode. So does Phineas and Ferb, and their songs are AMAZING.

I wouldn't watch it, then.

Not a minority opinion... go to LJ's ONTD_Glee and you can hate on all the Glee you want

I don't even watch Glee, so everything I know about the show I learned from FS. Isn't Glee about some high school group that's like a choir or something? Writing their own songs isn't really realistic for something like that.

I feel like no one's really arguing that it isn't a karaoke show at heart...I do agree that the extensive use of racial stereotypes marketed as "humour" is offensive though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I could never get into this show for these reasons. It felt like watching Moulin rouge all over again.

Eh, they at least got good songs like Somebody That I Used to Know on the charts, so I don't begrudge them for covering songs instead of writing originals. I do find the characters unfunny and uninteresting, so I'm not going to watch the show, but I don't really care too much about them covering songs.

So, so your high school wrote and performed its own original songs? Because mine sure as hell didn't.

And the orchestra didn't write its own songs.

And the band didn't write its own songs.

Each musical ensemble *GASP* covered the work of others. How awful!

I sure wish I'd gone to your school, OP. That would've been super exciting.

NOT EVEN GOING TO COMMENT ON THE MUSIC

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-14 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried so hard to like Glee. I actually really enjoyed the first season with its over-the-top humor and interesting cast of characters. Then the second season came out, and I got the feeling that what had previously been intentional stereotypes and satire, now was unintentional. But maybe hey were trying to be offensive on purpose? They had with the first season, and it often worked (to me, at least). But this seemed sincere, and therefore extremely problematic. Still, I persevered, and even when the third season brought unheard of levels of undisguised prejudice and heavy-handed morality tales within the same hour, I watched, because despite characterization issues, I still loved the members of Glee Club and wanted to see them succeed. By the time the season had ended, I felt....wounded, and a bit betrayed by the creators who had taken good characters and made them a mishmash of offensive stereotypes. Double standards were the rule, not the exception.

Still, I looked forward to the new season, hoping against hope it might improve with the departure of some of the core members. I wondered how they would handle both the Glee storyline and the New York storyline. Despite my hopes, I watched what could have been such a GOOD show writhe in its death throes, with completely unrelated stories for some reason being jammed together simply because the creators wouldn't let go of their clear favorite character. Meanwhile, the audacity and spectacle of some of the things in the high school story contrasted sharply with the depressing mess that was the "Rachel and Kurt in New York Show".

Finally, watching Blaine have an emotional breakdown on stage was the last straw. I couldn't stand what was happening to him. His character was nice and friendly despite being a bit too perfect at times, and his boyfriend was breaking his heart. Then, because it would be impossible for Kurt to do any wrong, Blaine's character was completely derailed into that of a cheater. WHAT? It's too much. I loved Kurt at first, and now he is this over-the-top perfect Gary Stu...monstrosity. I hated Rachel from the start, but now she is such a bad person that I don't believe she could ever deserve a happy ending. Yet for some reason Glee refuses to let the two of them go, or admit that they are anything but perfect.

After the Breakup Episode, I officially said goodbye to Glee. I only wish I had given up sooner, like after the second season, to save myself from the heartbreak of seeing what had started so well ruin itself so completely.

TL;DR GLEE WAS GOOD AT FIRST, BUT IT DIDN'T LAST AND I AM SO SAD BECAUSE OF HOW AWFUL IT IS NOW.

The show has actually done a few original songs.

They were pretty bad.

Glee is terrible, but it would be even MORE boring if they did original songs. The covers can at least be kind of fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I will say that while Smash's first season was a hot mess, I generally loved the original songs they wrote for "Marilyn: The Musical" (eventually called "Bombshell"), and that's probably why I prefer it to Glee, though it probably isn't much better.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Although I don't think they should write their own songs, I agree about the show. The whole thing is just one huge mess. I usually just record it and then I end up fast forwarding half of it till it gets to a character or song that I like. I didn't even realize I did this till the new season started. =x

"Zero effort", lol. I remember when the actors on Glee were overworked and underpaid for the work they did while Fox raked in millions of dollars every week from iTunes sales.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, do not want, because then I'd have to listen to Kelly Clarkson's singing to enjoy the catchy songs others wrote for her.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing so hard with this secret. I'm tired of these punks butchering the classics I grew up on with their American Idol Reject Pile voices. I really wish the show would just die the fuck out already and take its ridiculous stereotypes and shitty singing with it. Glee's like a reverse King Midas: everything it touches turns to shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
There was a UK show which was set in a Performing Arts high school that did all original songs, but it was axed after 9 episodes. Britannia High.

Um, isn't the point of Glee clubs in real life to sing/do vocal covers of pre-existing songs, not sing original stuff? Or am I mixing things up/missing something?

I was excited for Glee when I thought it would be like Sister Act. I don't know why I thought it would be like Sister Act. It's nothing like Sister Act.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I watch it when I'm drunk and there's nothing on and their squeaky autotuned voices become white noise, and I still don't know what the fuck's going on in that show.
