Unattractive either way.

There are reasons to think original Holmes was.

I'm not a BBC Sherlock fan. I want a female Holmes. Hello.

Re: Young adulthood status recs?

The one that really comes to mind is Reality Bites and that's from 1994. I guess Igby Goes Down sort of fits. I feel like a lot of Cameron Crowe movies deal with this. There's also St. Elmo's Fire (1985).

There's a fairly recent movie call Jeff, Who Lives at Home that might work for delayed adulthood, but it's not exactly about a young adult.

As for shows, I think pretty much any teen show that goes on long enough has to deal with this - Beverly Hills, 90210, That 70s Show, etc.

Raising Hope does this to a point, but it's a very quirky sort of comedy, so that might skew it a bit.

I still don't think that he thinks it's all real. It's a game to him, which makes his character damn infuriating.

Actually, I think one of his more human moments was when he was saying to Charming that now he was supposed to be learning swords and quests and that it hadn't turned out right. If Henry's spent the past year or so thinking that he's the son of a fairy tale princess and they just need to break the curse to make everything go back to normal, then maybe he's been pulling away from his peers because, as you say, they're not real to him.

It's still really annoying, but if Henry stops being a plot-device and actually becomes a slightly spoiled kid who thought that breaking the spell would give him the magical life that every kid dreams of, then at least he'll seem like a person.

You're absolutely right about the other kids. It's surreal that he never ever interacts with them. I mean, I very social at that age, but I still had peers, if not exactly friends. Henry's just...weird.

Definitely. Dylan (Stiles) has said that he doesn't get the ship and that Jeff likes to tease the fans, but most of the Sterek fans have yet to comment on it.

TW: Depression & Self-Harm

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've been going through a lot the past five days. Everything from the anniversary of my Grandpa's death to my abusive father and grandmother somehow getting my address and sending me an empty package to my Mom telling me that she was getting an official divorce from my father. I've been feeling emotionally and physically drained to the point where I feel as if I'm on the cusp of a depressive episode. The urge to self-harm has returned, as well as thoughts of death/dying in general. I've never self-harmed before and don't plan on starting, but the idea of it is certainly appealing.

My school has a mini break this week, but I just can't stand the idea of seeing a school counselor because I don't want to be made to take a leave of absence after I fought so hard to get back into school in the first place. I feel like if I tell them there's something wrong, they'll tell the Dean of Students about me, and he'll think I've gone off the deep end, and I'll end up "punished" for it. I would talk to my Mom about it, but she has a lot on her plate as well. She's going through the same things I am except at least she's at home, and I'm stuck at college and won't be going home until the end of Thanksgiving.

I also have a relative who is also in the midst of a mental breakdown, and she might have to leave school like I did last year from cracking under the abuse and pressure I was living with. My uncle's evil wife is also having a child at the end of this month. My uncle (Mom's brother) and her adopted a baby a few years ago, but she said she wanted "her own" baby, which "had better be a girl" so now she's having this baby to replace the boy she and my uncle adopted.

I just feel like my life is a mess right now, and I don't know how to handle it. I just want to pick up my razor blade and slice until this urge and anxiety goes away.

This! It really sounds like the usuall "Stop liking what I don't like!" Yeah, I have read these 67 volumes of manga just because I don't want to feel shallow. I totally don't care about the characters, the plot, the art. Of course not. I think it's all shit but I still read it. Totally. -_-

yay another troll

Re: Tired, no appetite

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I get like that when I have too much to do and I'm stressed out it makes me so worried I just don't feel like eating. After things slow down a bit you'll get your appetite back, don't worry.

I'm a female and I pretty much always play as male characters. I'm a traitor to my gender! OMG!

Yeah, sideeying hard, here.

Loved her in Get him to the Greek.

SPOILERS in here

I started reading it early on when the drama/angst wasn't laid on as thick, but now I only keep up just to find out what happens in the end. I'm just not invested any more.

*SPOILERS SPOILERS*

Plus personally whenever I can see a child sexual abuse plotline coming in a story, part of me just goes "...oh no." I think some part of me just disapproves of fictional treatments of the subject (even though it has never been part of my life). Maybe I've just seen it played for cheap drama too many times to react any other way :\

The generally awful representation of adoption in mainstream entertainment media is something that's bugged me for an age, but over the last couple of seasons it's really started to anger me.

This and Teen Wolf have made me really quite ranty for the year or so.

And hand waving away the problems with how they address the issue of adoption because Regina's evil is just lazy and not wanting to admit that the show has a real problem with it.

Yes! That is exactly my problem with Henry. He's remained stationary while all the other characters have had at least a pinch of development.

All of this is so spot on about why Henry as a character bugs me. He's the least child-like 10 year old I've ever seen. Ever.

And, yeah, if they'd give him an actual storyline, that would be awesome but I really can't see it happening.

I liked it too

I'd argue that the whole 'throwing her mum into a magic mirror' showed that she did hate her for what happened to Daniel. Just, it's easier to act out against someone who can't really fight back as opposed to a really powerful witch who has been emotionally manipulating you your entire life.

Anon, please go see the counselor. They won't kick you out of school just for being depressed.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the good Doctor ain't neither a cute lil' twink or a big sexy hunk so he clearly don't count, see.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yet you and I both know that it's easier on the internet to find people who are more accepting. I think you're creating a false dilemma with this "get close to people in real life and get killed for my deep dark secret OR have shitty online friendships based on literally nothing but anime and lies" choice you're presenting.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
(I would almost certainly be in jail if that was the case)

This I need to remember. Heh.

Seriously though, the main reason I hate most fat Beat'em up characters is because they are so. damn. slow. I prefer speed over strength in the characters I play. Doesn't have anything to do with my attitude towards fat people in real life. (I should know, I'm quite fat myself but far from slow.)

How is it weird, under the circumstances? Henry was brought into town as a baby, and as he's grown up, all these kids have stayed exactly the age. Until Emma came, they were all frozen in time by the curse. Kids that were his age in first grade are now 3-4 years younger than him. He's smart enough to have eventually figured out that this was not normal. I don't blame him for withdrawing and keeping to himself. Now that time is flowing normally again, maybe he will eventually start making friends, but he's still pretty caught up in the excitement of what's going on, and of course he wants to be involved. That doesn't seem weird to me.

This so much. (Except that luckily I do like Mac and DB, who I didn't expect to like, but CSI: Miami is my favorite by far.)
