Same here.

First person fic is awkward as hell to me.

I came across a story I really wanted to read once, but couldn't until a friend went through it for me and changed it to third person because she knew how much it annoyed me, but wanted me to enjoy the fic :)

Agreed so much. I always feel like I'm reading what the author thinks, never the character. I know all fanfic is like this but first person pov makes it more obvious somehow.

I avoid them too. I don't care for first-person even in original fic. There's been some exceptions, but as a rule it's third-person only (because I dislike second-person even more than first-person).

Fanfic shmanfic, I'm in despair that so many published YA novels are on the 1st person POV bandwagon now. I don't want to live in the head of these teenangst people, arrgh!

Usually it sounds like a teenager to me. Since I'm not in fandoms with teenage characters, it always sounds immature and unnecessary.

I actually like it. Not always, or for every fandom/character, it all depends on the author.

I felt this way too, until I started writing fic in first person. It was meant to be an experiment, but I enjoyed it so much, I'm finding it hard to go back (third person omniscient was my preference before now). Sucks if that means I'll have less of an audience, but I write what I like to write. So yeah, I feel ya OP, but I'm a little sad for all the potentially awesome fic you could be missing.

I don't backbutton immediately, because two of my favourite fics across all fandoms are first person - however, considering the amount of fic I've read in my lifetime, that's a tiny amount of first person fic that has actually worked for me.

I give it about two paragraphs. Then I usually backbutton. ;)

I can read original fiction in first person perspective, but that's it.

With fics it weirds me out and I normally end up thinking, "No, that's not who they are. That doesn't work. That doesn't fit."

Characterization is easier to do in fics in the third person because you're not constantly in the character's head.

I find first person especially awkward if it involves porn. And that goes for any type of fic, not just fanfic.

Thank you for this staggeringly unique opinion. At least you seem to have put some thought into why you hate it besides the assumption that it's all self-inserty.

Depends? First-person POV is super tricky, but it can be done right. While I usually find it done wrong, I'd be lying if I said I never read a good First Person POV fanfic.

I agree completely anon. I also really hate how popular it's becoming to write fiction in the second person. It ALWAYS sounds awkward as hell.

Not particularly because I think they sound wrong, or OOC, or anything like that. I just really can't get into first person POV fics. As soon as I see that a fic is first person POV fic I hit the close tab.

The only time I can really put up with it is if it's for something that was already in first person, like Dresden Files. But mostly...no, it's just kind of squicky.

Well, despite apparently everyone here agreeing with you, I will continue to write my Sherlock Holmes pastiche/fanfics in first person, because if it's good enough for ACD...

Personally, if something's in first person POV, I'd give it a shot until it sounded very OOC.

I'm the anon that brought it up yesterday in the general comment thread, but I'm more bothered by fics that switch tenses. If the fics in the fandom switch from second (I mistakenly said first yesterday, but it's the main character speaking in the second person about 95% of the time) to third (because of the show's narration), I backbutton. It's too jarring in fic. The narration's really used to describe what's happening in a scene for the most part, and I feel people who switch tenses in fic miss the point of the narration. And as I said yesterday, even the fandom's official books keep a consistent first person POV (from the main character).

As for me, I started writing first person POV for this fandom because of an online blog written in first person POV (that has since been discontinued by the network). I at least strive to keep the tone of that blog when I write this particular character (not the MC).

tl;dr, but personally I feel not all first person POV for fic is horrible and OOC, and I'm tired of the prevalent attitude of writing it off because "oh noes, it's in first person!"
