I am tired of people complaining about too much Sterek. Or *fill in the blank* about any fandom ever.

LET PEOPLE FAN THE WAY THEY WANT TO FAN.

Trying to get people to stop liking the things they like is an exercise in futility. Might I suggest instead:
- Accepting that you can't change some things.
- Ignoring things that bother you.
- Focusing on things you enjoy.
- NICELY (tip - blanket accusations of being racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, whatever: not going to get people to listen to you) promoting parts of Teen Wolf (or whatever) that you think should be emphasized more.
- Be the change you want to see in your fandom or stop stressing about it.

Some people like to complain. That's the way they want to fan. Hush.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This is quite true. However, the hush is unnecessary and patronizing. If they're allowed to complain, I'm allowed to complain about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, if fans like to fan by hushing people who like to fan by complaining about people who like to fan by complaining, WHY YOU GOTTA HATE?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
*applause*

Hush.

When the ENTIRE FUCKING FANDOM treats you like shit for not shipping the main pairing, then there's a problem.

Fuck, one of my best friends got angry and personally offended when I said I don't ship it. Someone I thought would be perfectly fine with it.

Teen Wolf fandom is quickly turning into a combination of the Supernatural and Glee fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience (and I should point out that while I'm a fan of the show and so follow things, I'm not really in the fandom so I don't have a pony in this race), there's far more hate directed at Sterek shippers for monopolizing the fandom/harrassing actors and JD, etc. than there is hate directed at non-Sterek shippers for not liking the pairing. But nonetheless, here are some other suggestions:

- Hang out in corners of fandom that share your interests and opinions.
- Point out when people are behaving rudely while also attempting not to sink to their level.
- Stop caring what strangers on the internet think about you.
- Tell your friend to grow up/shut up.
- Accept that wank is part of fandom.

[personal profile] pynapel 2012-10-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Could you not treat me like a child? You probably think you're being helpful, but really it just came across as very condescending.

I'm a big girl. I can figure it out. And if I can't, I will ask for help. Please don't throw it at me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when people respond to a post containing suggestions on how to deal with things in fandom with problems they have, the natural progression of the conversation is to address those problems in the same manner and tone of the original comment.

Or I wasn't trying to be helpful and was trying to be sarcastic and condescending.

Or C) all of the above.

[personal profile] pynapel 2012-10-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
You know what? I tried to be nice. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, and chose to believe that you are truly a nice person. I exploded at first, but felt I was polite in your condescending asshole post. Of course, now you show your ass.

And I'm not in the least bit surprised.

DA No, not the "natural progression" - the progression when one of the parties is being supercilious and not listening properly.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's... a very bad combination.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
don't even bother. if you try to point this out, sterek fans will just boo hoo about how they are so oppressed and they aren't all bad!! a lot of SPN fans jumped ship to this show, so i am not surprised.

also i have seen fans (sterek shippers lol) admit that they DON'T EVEN WATCH THE SHOW, or only watch stiles/sterek parts and they still do fan works for it. go figure huh.

[personal profile] pynapel 2012-10-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of SPN and Glee fans. Glee ends in early summer, which is when Teen Wolf begins.

Cue disaster.

Teen Wolf fandom is quickly turning into a combination of the Supernatural and Glee fandoms.
Oh fuck that's SO TRUE. /o\

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship Sterek either, and yeah, some people get really bent out of shape if you tell them as much and I'm really sick of having it shoved in my face. That being said, there are some of the anti-Sterek people who are just as ridiculous about being asshats to others, but they think that not being a majority group somehow justifies their hate. There are people being assholes on all sides here, honestly, and it's making the fandom a not very fun place to be.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
uhhh those of us TRY to focus on the things we like. it is hard when sterk is EVERYWHERE, and some sterek fans feel the need to interject themselves in spaces they are not welcome. i have seen posts about pairings and characters besides sterek be derailed into sterek. i've seen fan art of other pairings be assumed as sterek even when it clearly states it is not.

but wow, yeah. how dare people call out racism, sexism, and all that stuff. so not nice!! because you know, being called a racist is worse than being one and the like.

[personal profile] pynapel 2012-10-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
yes
yes
yes
i love you

you took my words and said them nicely and yes

four for you

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not going to bother engaging you on the first paragraph because your second paragraph is pissing me off too much. That's not what I said so don't put words in my mouth. Obviously concerns about isms should be raised and discussed. However, assuming that all Sterek shippers are racist (for example) solely based on the fact that they ship Sterek is not only inaccurate, it's rude as hell. IMO, it makes people who use that strategy apparently only for the purpose of trying to "guilt" others into changing their shipping preferences come off as ridiculous. The same can be said for shippers who use issues of gay rights and representation as justification for trying to make slash ships canon, as far as I'm concerned. Hiding ship wars behind important issues is counterproductive to the aim of having real discussion about them.

None of this has to do with my point above - getting people to engage in polite and productive discussion and debate by insulting them is never going to happen. And like it or not, accusing someone of prejudice without foundation is insulting them.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
oh well, then i guess i will be rude as hell. all my interactions with sterek shippers have been negative, upsetting, and at times triggering not only for myself but others. when it comes time to point out someone being fucked up, the person calling out is the bad guy and all the other little shipper friends rally around, complaining about how it's so terrible to call so-and-so homophobic or racist or whatever. it makes my life easier to assume someone is an asshole until proven otherwise....and that has yet to happen.

i also don't give a FUCK if i hurt someone's poor little feels by calling them out as racist or whatever. maybe they shouldn't say terrible shit if they don't want to be assumed to be a terrible person :)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake. Yes, if people say terrible shit, then call them out on it. If people are happily writing fic/drawing art/what have you of a pairing that's not your cup of tea and not actually saying or doing anything fucked up, don't accuse them of something horrible and then complain about them taking offense at it or not responding to your objections in the way you want.

I deal with assholes all the time. They're incredibly easy to...manipulate.

All I read was

"wah someone didn't use an inconvenient disclaimer and therefore called all sterek shippers racist, which as everyone knows is the WORST THING IN THE WORLD TO BE CALLED"

i bet you're the guy who says "BUT WE'RE NOT ALL LIKE THAT" when someone makes a legitimate complaint about a group of people

go home

Yes, thank you! This is increasingly becoming the new way to fight ship wars, and I'm not even talking about Teen Wolf fandom now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. My admitted argumentativeness aside, this aspect of fandom is disgusting, and the trend needs to stop. I completely believe that fandom is absolutely fantastic for educating people, increasing tolerance and changing the world. That will never happen if people appropriate and abuse such issues simply to ship and/or flame.
