Even as a fan of Sterek, I can see why it would be irritating if you wanted to read something else. It is EVERYWHERE. Want a zombie AU? Well there a ton of those if you don't mind that they're all Sterek. Want a funny Buffy crossover? I can find that for you, but it'll be Sterek.

I think it's entertaining to read Sterek fic (bc it's basically J2 imo) but I wish that meta on tumblr were about something other than them :\ The show has so many well fleshed out characters and I wish people talked about them as much as they did while the show was airing. :(

I have never seen a single minute of Teen Wolf and even I'm sick of Sterek just from incidental stumbles and osmosis. Can someone explain to me what their canon vs fanon relationship is like and why people ship them so hard?

I do sympathize though. I remember how, for some people, every single thing in Avatar the Last Airbender was viewed through the lens of shipping and ship-support and ship-sinking and it was like they thought every character besides Aang/Katara/Zuko/Mai and the entire plot and all the storylines and events and were just there as pointless filler or as plot devices that existed for the sole purpose of enhancing the (very minor, btw) romance angle and the shipping wars. Argh. Same for those ultra-fanatical Barney/Robin shippers too, who make me embarrassed to ship Barney/Robin because they're literally convinced that HIMYM is actually the story of how Barney and Robin met and the other three characters exist solely to give Barney and Robin someone to talk to when they're busy ~yearning.

I think you kind of just have to take it in stride at this point, that fandom is going to randomly get obsessed with some pairing or show. It's, like, a natural phenomenon. The tides will go in and out, a show will randomly develop an extremely fanatical fanbase around one ship. It's just the way of things. Gotta accept it and work around it.

Canon: Stiles and Derek tolerate each other...somewhat. Derek tolerates Stiles more. Stiles on the other hand has occasionally mentioned that he would not mind one bit if Derek would die because werewolves, with the exception of Scott, seem to do nothing but destroy everything they touch.

Fanon: Derek and Stiles are secretly in love. Like some forbidden Romeo and Juliet type deal. Derek watches out for poor, helpless little red riding hood Stiles. (He is often pictured with a red hoodie.)

Okay. In canon, Stiles and Derek have a comedic, antagonistic, reluctant allies, trust issues type of dynamic going on, which is entertaining, but there's really no mutual affection there. It's kind of a thing wherein one calls the other up for help a few times a season, they yell at each other, and then they save each other's lives. It's not slashy in any of the usual ways; there's no ~beautiful devotion~, or strange obsession, or anything like that. The thing is that there's a ton of slashy potential, and it's easy to see a million different ways in which the relationship could be deepened and explored (or lbr, just exploited for porn). What's not to love about the idea of a broody werewolf with emotional trauma and a teen genius with ADHD fighting evil and having kinky underage sex? There is everything to love about it. So it became a great big fanon Thing.

And then the creator of the show smashed down the fourth wall with the power of twitter when he cheerfully declared that he could be persuaded to make it canon, and it's been a bucket of insanity since then.

This is kinda long, but you asked about fanon vs. canon and it's kinda hard to explain

When I first watched Teen Wolf, I shipped Sterek. I think it's because I usually fall for the dynamic of ~broody frown monster~ and ~peppy snark monster~.

After thinking about it, they have nothing in common. Oh, wait, they both know the main character. And...that's it. They don't like each other. Stiles constantly alludes to how he wishes Derek would die, but fangirls play that off as "oh he's just being tough! he' really does care about him!" Which, no. He doesn't. Stiles cares about three things in the world: Scott (the main character), Lydia (the girl he's "in love with"), and his father. Everyone else can fuck off a cliff and die for all he cares. Stiles is an asshole.
Derek doesn't care about Stiles, either. All Derek cares about is avenging his dead sister and being a good leader. A job which he could use some improvement in.

Fandom, however, thinks they are in ~twu wuv~, which irks a lot of people because Stiles and Derek are literally the whitest dudes on the fucking show, and they aren't even confirmed gay. There's been some allusions as to whether Stiles may be bi or pan or something, and yes, I know that sexual orientation has never stopped fandom before but it's kinda gross.
Because the canon gay character just so happens to be named Danny Mahealani, as in, he's not white. And so he is glossed over by the entire fandom, or killed in fics for an emotional punch. Then they cry "but he's so boring/underdeveloped!" well, that's the writers' fault, and can't you develop him a bit more in your fics? You have no problem elaborating on Derek, Isaac, and Erica, all of whom are mysterious without a lot of backstory, but when it comes to Danny or Boyd (a black character)? NOPE. THEY'RE BORING I DON'T WANNA.

And the creator, Jeff Davis, says that he doesn't expand on Danny or Boyd because he "doesn't know enough about such minority groups so he's not comfortable writing them." Okay, then why are they even in the show? Better yet, HIRE WRITERS WHO ARE POC. And some more women, because you suck at writing women, Jeff Davis.

Worse is that Teen Wolf has fallen into queer-baiting; Jeff Davis and the other creators know that people ship Sterek, so they just love to tease everyone with it, even go so far as to have a fanfic contest, where like 1 out of 10 winning stories wasn't about Sterek.

I just feel there's a lot of hypocrisy in the fandom, and the slash goggles are on so tight that many Sterek fen are blinded to the fandom's problems.
And god forbid you're not a Sterek fan! If you don't ship it, then you may as well not even be alive, because you are a heartless piece of shit.

And don't get me started on the Sterek fen creating false meta to make it seem canon. Ugh. Meta is supposed to make you think about the world of the story, not reinforce your stupid ship.

While Sterek is really the only couple I read in the fandom (but I don't actually ship it in the context of the show. Just some of my favorite fandom writers have flocked there, and I enjoy reading their work) - I understand this ultimate anti-Sterek backlash, because even on my tumblr dash it's getting freaking ridiculous.

Especially the meta - which turns into just grasping at straws and weird inanimate object porn. I mean - I agree with another commenter above - they have a great antagonistic, reluctant allies relationship and for some reason shit like that drives the fangirls mad. Ijust don't understand why it can't stay a fandom thing and why everyone is chomping at the bit to make it canon - and using really bad reasoning for it to become so.


It doesn't help that Stiles is the fan favorite and Derek is so fucking hot - add in the possibility of hate sex and fangirls are excited.

I am tired of people complaining about too much Sterek. Or *fill in the blank* about any fandom ever.

LET PEOPLE FAN THE WAY THEY WANT TO FAN.

Trying to get people to stop liking the things they like is an exercise in futility. Might I suggest instead:
- Accepting that you can't change some things.
- Ignoring things that bother you.
- Focusing on things you enjoy.
- NICELY (tip - blanket accusations of being racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, whatever: not going to get people to listen to you) promoting parts of Teen Wolf (or whatever) that you think should be emphasized more.
- Be the change you want to see in your fandom or stop stressing about it.

It may be frustrating, but there's a fairly simple solution: love the pairings you love, write about them, blog about them, do graphics, spread your love, make friends with other people who love the same thing, and focus your energy there instead of worrying about what the fandom as a whole is doing. People who love many Teen Wolf pairing are out there, and the more we all love our pairings and spread that love, the better chance we will have of finding each other.

It's kind of sad that this fandom is so dominated by one pairing. It seems to me that it's the perfect fodder for everyone x everyone. They are all hot, young, and uninhibited. There's a lot of fun to be had with all the various dynamics. Sterek is nice, but sometimes it seems shoe horned and a lot of it is getting pretty damn repetitive.

As someone who comes from a fandom where one pairing is about 95% of the focus, I get the frustration. It sucks when you don't ship the pairing that everyone else does. It sucks when people who do ship that pairing ignore/bash/dismiss the pairings or characters you do like. But at the same time, people are going to ship what they want so the only thing you can really do is try to ignore it and/or avoid the fandom in general. If you can find a community devoted to or friends who also like the characters/pairings you do, just play in those areas and talk to those people.

I wouldn't ask for less Sterek (I totally enjoy it myself), I just want more of everyone and everything else.

Seriously, there's an amazing cast, a variety of interesting characters and there's a lot of different plots going on. I love to see more fandom focus on that stuff.

Just as a bit of clarification, I honestly don't want people to stop writing or liking Sterek (and this secret was not meant as a "STEREK SHIPPERS ARE THE WORST AND WHILE I'M HERE LET ME TELL YOU WHY ANYONE WHO DISLIKES SCOTT IS AWFUL" thing, but I probably should have known that's where people would go with it). I'd just like it if some of the more enthusiastic parts of the Sterek fandom took it down a notch and realized that taking meta, posts, and discussions that are not about Sterek and making them about Sterek is both annoying and rude. It's also pretty exclusionary and makes the fandom feel a lot less welcoming to people who don't like Sterek or don't primarily like Sterek. The answer isn't so much that there needs to be less Sterek, as it is that there needs to be more other pairings/characters/things, but sometimes it's kind of hard to make more of the other stuff when every time you try there are a dozen people jumping in and getting Sterek all over it.

That, along with a lot of the general cluelessness about issues like race, gender, and sexual orientation, and the tendency of people on both sides of the issue to misappropriate causes and terminology to prop up their character and ship arguments, has made the fandom a pretty frustrating place to be at the best of times. I love the show and the characters, but lately I just tend to ignore the fandom at large and only bother talking about it with the friends I already have who like it. I'm currently hoping it just need to hit critical mass before the Sterek fervor can die down a bit and everyone on all sides will calm the hell down so I can enjoy my show about shirtless teenage werewolves without the residual fandom-induced headache.
