yes. a lot of feelings. from having to deal with bullshit any time i want to wander into TW fandom.

most sterek fans end up being scott haters, or at least they enjoy putting him down/making fun of him/acting like he is terrible and stupid. a favorite term is to call him a potato which is ableist and gross. not to mention dragging him down for his grades and generally calling him dumbass, dumb fuck, etc.

COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

Ok, but I am COMPLETELY UNFAMILIAR with the characters. So is this Scott dude disabled? And what does "potato" refer to, exactly?

Re: COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
no, he is not. at all. in TW he is bitten by a werewolf, turns into one, and his life goes to shit. one of the parts of the plot is that because of that his grades start to slip. parts of fandom like to crack jokes about this, call him stupid, useless, and other negative shit (even though it is CANON that before becoming a damn werewolf he was a good student with good grades...but even then, measuring someone's worth and intelligence on their test scores is not good).

they also make fun of his personality. he is a very happy kid (most of the time), very nice. he is also prone to playing captain obvious and saying stuff that fans also call him stupid for. they see him as an airhead and totally worthless and lost without Stiles (his bff, and half of Sterek). and even in canon on the show when he pulls the rug out of under the season's big bad....people refused to believe he came up with the plan on his own. because he is 'too stupid'. the term potato is supposedly used as a term of endearment, like "aww he is so stupid look at how cute he is" but it's not endearing. at all. it's also been used to make fun of people with downs so using it to describe someone....ugh.

(fandom also likes to compare him to a dog, and draw him and only him as a dog, which a+ comparing a POC character to an animal and inanimate objects)

DA

I love Scott and hate all the negativity toward him, too - especially calling him "potato". :/

When was it mentioned that he was a good student before getting bitten, though? I thought he was always on the average/below average scale, and it tipped after the bite, but I never saw his grades as a reason to hate him, regardless, since he's such a sweetheart. In fact, he's one half of MY OTP, but I just don't recall it being mentioned in canon that he had good grades before?

If you could fill me in, that would be awesome. Since he's one of my favorites, I tend to write him a lot, and more insight into his character from details I missed would help. Thanks! :)

Re: COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
in the scene where you see the grade on a test he is handed back (sorry, i don't recall the episode) it says right in red on the top of the paper THIS ISN'T LIKE YOU, or something similar, implying that getting bad grades is abnormal and worries the teacher. but of course most people don't seem to notice that....they only notice that he got a bad grade.

also, and this is something that you could argue for or against, he is in the same math class as lydia. i imagine that lydia would be in a math class that is the higher level choice (for example, in my HS it was normal to take algebra I in freshman year, but if you wanted to you could take one level math higher). if he is on par with lydia clearly he is not 'below average'. but again that is more fanon than canon.

Off Topic - but what is your OTP? I actually really like Scott/Allison but I am interested in the Scott/Issac dynamic.

Ah, I see the problematic issues there. Fans are prone to picking characters that they don't like, though, and twisting them every which way so that they aren't a "good guy" or so that they are so incompetent that they just get in the way, etc.

I mean, look at all the entries under Ron the Death Eater at tvtropes. Obviously it's different when the insults and whatnot aimed at a character are actual slurs and offensive language, but the general underlying intention seems to be the same. People don't like someone, but they don't have a solid rational reason to dislike them, so they exaggerate any slightly negative trait (bad grades, short temper, clumsiness, etc...) to such outrageous proportions that the person becomes a caricature to them. If enough people do the same, fanon interpretation of that character eventually becomes unrecognizable when compared to canon.

I've never seen Teen Wolf and had no desire to watch it based on what I saw on my tumblr dashboard...because I thought Sterek stuff made up the bulk of the show and it sounded boring as fuck.

But hearing that the actual main character is a happy nice kid dealing with being a werewolf has actually piqued my interest! Happy characters dealing with shitty things is my bulletproof character trope, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE IT.

Re: COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
that's happened to a lot of people :( many folks think Stiles and Derek are the main characters, when actually, they have few scenes together lol. Scott is a bright ray of sunshine and tbh my favorite character on TV right now so I hope you enjoy him!

There is so little Sterek feelings in the actual show that I think you will enjoy it a lot. At most they have six scenes together just the two of them over the first two seasons.

And Scott is pretty much always adorable throughout. And badass at times.

Seconding the whole "all I've seen is boringass Sterek so I have NO INTEREST" thing. Never even knew that the main character wasn't either of them.

Granted, it's been on the reading list here on DW just as much as Tumblr. (Ahahahaha FILTER BY TAGS, I LOVE YOU)

I'm a Sterek fan and... which fandom corners you guys hang out? I've never seen much hate at Scott (sure, there's been few tweenies on tumblr who don't appreciate him) but... that much hate - never really crossed my dashboard.

Re: COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Scott is not disabled at all. I like to think of him as the very typical jock/frat boy cliche. He's not a scholar and is occasionally slow on the uptake.

Scott just doesn't happen to be people's favorite character and some parts of the fandom find this upsetting. The potato thing is really really stupid in fandom - but I haven't seen one of the big shippers mean it maliciously or in an ableist fashion. The first commenter is just stirring shit up.

Its precious that SJW fans ate so concerned about "potato," a slur based on an obscure internet meme, but could care less about the constant use of "spazz" and "spastic" in regards to the white best friend.

He would be if that was all he was. But then he was turned into a werewolf, so...

Seriously, all the characters are cliched tropes, and intentionally so, because it's on MTV. The creators know who butters their bread, honey, and they pander to cliches every day.

but I haven't seen one of the big shippers mean it maliciously or in an ableist fashion. The first commenter is just stirring shit up.

NTAYRT but what does it matter who says it, whether it's a 'big shipper'? Is that supposed to make it less offensive that only 1000 non-BNF's are using it daily? I guess that's acceptable then?

Wow, put down the coffee. I think you've had enough.

And I'll say it a million times. The guy is an airhead. It's a running joke how he isn't swift. Like the "Alison" password bit. "You still want him in your pack?" And when the writers are serious, they go with the threat of him having to repeat a grade because he was failing so many classes.

I agreed. He has some of the best lol lines in the season - and it's nice to not have a SUPER SMART GENIUS as a main character. He is a very typical high school sophomore.

Plus, he fucked up Gerard in the season finale. He's not stupid - he's just a little bit of an airhead.

Scott's the guy in the secret below about the "crazy jawline". He's not disabled. I have absolutely no idea where the potato thing came from or what it refers to. Scott's not stupid, but a lot of fans in S1 got really frustrated with him because of his obsession with his girlfriend and his complete lack of perspective. The show itself even poked fun at this ("His password is also Allison?" "Sure you still want him in your pack?") Everything with Scott in the first season pretty much revolved around his feelings about Allison, and that turned off a lot of fans, especially when people are dying, people are being tortured, and Scott's all AllisonAllisonAllison.

Re: COMPLETELY SERIOUS QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the main reason I never warmed to Scott and to this day, while I like him more, I still have issues with him. His single-mindedness and lack of perspective tended to annoy me. His focus on Allison was limiting to his development as a character and made him less appealing to me.

you should read the On Fire book and see how Derek acts towards Kate. it's very similar, and it's alluded that this is in part due to the werewolf side of them. the desire to latch onto one person and focus on them. Derek dreams of marrying Kate and having her be a werewolf and all these strange day dreams lol.
