Roseanne doesn't believe that transsexuals shouldn't have the same rights.

But I haven't seen South Park in years so I'm not too clear on what that is about. But South Park is an equal opportunity offender, so it wouldn't surprise me.

NA

What does South Park have to do with Roseanne? Was she on South Park and made a trans joke? It's South Park. Next week they'll be making jokes about Cartman going on a strict diet of shit. It's what they do.

Roseanne got into a twitter fight because she feels that pre-op transexuals should use the mens or ladies room based on the genitalia they currently have. There is a huge wank in some feminist circles that trans women are not real women and therefore cannot be feminists.

I *think* what the op is saying is that both Roseanne and SP are both guilty of transphobia.

IDK, I can acknowledge that things in the media are *problematic* (I hate that word), but I'm not going to go on a rampage on how horrible everything is.

I like South Park, I like Roseanne. I wish Roseanne was more open minded when it came to gender identity, but I'm not going to let that ruin my weekend Roseanne marathons on TV Land. I sometimes think South Park goes too far, but it's South Park, it's what they do.

In my opinion, that's the beauty of South Park--pretty much anyone could find at least one episode that they'd be offended by. It's fair that way. It might seem like they're going too far insulting one community one week, but then another week they'll go too far insulting the opposite side. I love it.

ITA. One episode can be horrifically offensive to me, and the next one will be hilarious.

I kinda like that they are equal opportunity offenders, it reminds me not to take some shit too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I just choose to not be offended. It's satire. As others have said, "it's what they do".

If the creators honestly believe every single thing they've portrayed in an offensive way they are truly horrible people. However, I am a rational person and recognize that they DON'T believe it, they're just dicking about. Because that's why people watch the show.

This. South Park insults everyone. Obviously, not everyone likes this, and that's fine, but they're never biased to one group.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if they insult everyone, they still make episodes where they say certain groups or issues are wrong. They don't treat everything equally.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Certain episodes clearly have messages or morals they're trying to show. Did you see Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina? The whole episode was about him getting a sex change, and how it was unnatural, how he was wrong and perverted, ect ect.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Did YOU see how at the end he was happy with "the new me" and ran off to find a man, and how for the rest of the season the character was called MRS Garrison and referred to as "she" with no further fuss? SO PHOBIC OMG.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Please, the whole point of the episode that it was unnatural and wrong; that they kept Garrison as a woman to use for more humor in later episodes doesn't negate that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not seeing it.

It's fairly obvious when SP is lampooning something or when they have an actual agenda-- like the episode aout Terri Shiavo.

This episode was just them using transgender surgery as a launching pad for jokes about black people and dolphins.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, with the joke being that wanting a sex change was as ridiculous as having surgery to become a black person or a dolphin.

In the beginning of the episode, the doctor giving Garrison the sex change tells him "I think if more people could just see a sex-change operation, they would know how perfectly natural it is." Then we see graphic real-life footage as the doctor explains what he's doing. The joke is that it's unnatural.

When Garrison sees Mr. Slave, Mr. Slave is upset and tells him "It's great that you feel better, but you never stopped to think about how other people around you would feel!" Garrison is portrayed as being selfish or wrong.

When Garrison is told that he can't get pregnant, he says "But I paid five thousand dollars to be a woman. This would mean I I'm not really a woman. Ih, I'm just a... I'm just a guy with a mutilated penis!"

Etc, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
if I was in a long-term relationship with someone and they got a surprise!sex change, I'd probably be a bit dismayed too, especially if I preferred the sex they used to be. just sayin yo

I don't think the episode had a "point". Matt and Trey admitted that they didn't have much of an idea of what to do so they said "Hey, let's do an episode on sex changes."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And their opinions didn't influence the way they wrote the episode?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. It is kind of hard to believe that they share the feelings of every episode they have. Their job is to make fun, and take the extremist view. If they didn't know what to write about, then they might have once again looked at that view.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Which episodes have taken an extremist view? Most of their viewpoints are libertarian.

Right. Did you see the episode where he gets his penis back? It was all about how genitals -don't- determine what gender you are.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was that Garrison was never really a woman even though he had a sex change. Which is how the show treated him the whole time he was Mrs. Garrison.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like they don't get that the point of South Park is to be offensive! If everything in that show would reflect the creators opinions there would be nothing those two would like and approve off. Honestly, is there anything SP hasn't made fun off? Anything?!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Even when they make fun of everything, they still treat different groups and issues better than others.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Which groups are these?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Just a couple of examples, but Christians, Jews, and gays.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

I don't think they are particularly nice to Christians. There was an entire episode about how literally every Catholic priest was a pedophilic rapist to the point that it was regarded as "normal" by the Catholic Church to sexually molest and rape boys. And let's not forget that the Christian god is portrayed as a fat hippo-cat.

And while gays aren't portrayed as abnormal abominations, gay men are portrayed as annoying fairies with a lisp and gay women as mostly butch, fat and conventionally unattractive (see the episode about "LesBos").
