Honestly, I'm over the "I refuse to watch Elementary because" secrets. You don't like Elementary, you don't like Elementary. Move on.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Did you even read the secret?

lol. Right? If you don't want to watch Elementary then just... don't watch it.

No need to make an announcement.

But idk. Maybe these secret makers are hanging out in parts of fandom where all their friends are watching it and thus they are the odd one out? IDK IDK

...nearly twenty years...

Shit. I'm old.

I love The X-Files, but I've never seen Mulder as a Holmes stand-in.

[personal profile] septimalshenanigans 2012-11-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
There actually were some trivial references to ACD in the show though, so it's possible that Chris Carter did.

I thought maybe the OP was seeing Scully, with her logical rigour, as the Holmes stand-in. But I can see why you'd see it the other way round, with Scully being the doctor of the pair.

Films (I'm including television because they're very similar media) rarely pass the Bechdel test (two or more female characters must talk for at least one minute about something other than a male character). The assumption is that, unless there's a man involved, on one will care!

Check out this article on Cracked: http://www.cracked.com/article_20082_6-insane-stereotypes-that-movies-cant-seem-to-get-over.html. Or don't, since you'll table flip out of rage.

I'm East Asian and the "our white guy is better than the natives who has been training all their lives" trope pisses me of so fucking much.

I know people who are blind and are productive members of society. There are blind people who use echolocation to navigate as well or better than non-blind people. The depiction of disabled=awkward pisses me off too.

Actually, everything in the article pissed me off. Imma get a beer >:|

Sorry, I don't see it. And no, not because they don't use the names "Holmes" and "Watson", but... what about either of them seems like Sherlock Holmes to you? You want modern, US-based Sherlock Holmes aside from Elementary, you should watch Bones.

X-Files is not a "modern Sherlock Holmes in America" in the same way Elementary is. you could say X-Files is influenced by ACD but only in the sense that all mystery writing pretty much is. I really don't see either character as a Holmes or a Watson stand-in, and I think it's kind of insulting to reduce them down to that.

This comparison actually kind of annoys me, because X-Files was awesome, all on its own. It doesn't need to be an adaptation of a way overused source material (which ACD is, feelings on the stories themselves aside) to be an awesome thing.

Also, like a previous comment said: you don't have to like Elementary anyway. You aren't obligated to do so because on of the mains is female.

"It makes me sad to see that we still struggle to find complex, well-rounded female characters"

>> implying Joan isn't

>> stating you don't watch the show

ok

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't struggle. Four of the five shows I watch regularly have complex, well-rounded female characters: The Good Wife, Once Upon a Time, Elementary, and Revenge.

And then there's Arrow, which is terrible with female characters but has one of the best African American male characters I've seen in that kind of show, so I take what I can get.

Well what do you think about Joan from all the Elementary episodes that have been around so far? The show is still young, and I think they're setting up a good scenario to explore her with.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought: "It hasn't been twenty years, not by a long shot. It's been... holy crap, almost twenty years. Good lord, I'm old."

I think I can sort of see where you're coming from with the comparison between the characters, what with Mulder having a kind of gift for what he does, and Scully being the medical expert, and the two of them being close and supporting each other. However, I don't think that's quite right. Holmes is all about the observation of small details, while Mulder uses intuition and empathy. Watson is more of a direct assistant to Holmes, whereas Scully helps Mulder by holding him accountable to, well, lots of things. Besides, I kind of think that Mulder and Scully deserve to be their own legendary duo. =)

Yes, Mulder was a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes. But neither he nor Scully are very Holmes-like.

I really just...I don't know what you see. You know how there are slash goggles? I think maybe you have Holmes goggles.

There have been plenty of well rounded female characters since the X files. And by the way, the X-files and Elementary share just about nothing in common with each other. Not even on the most superficial level. They aren't even in the same genre.

Edit: Erg -- I'm tired. I pretty much misinterpreted what you meant. You really literally think that X-files is a good stand in for Elementary. I have no idea why. Except for having a male and female lead characters and having something remotely to do with solving crimes, everything from the atmosphere, the characterizations, the dynamic, the crimes, nothing is remotely similar. It's like saying when you want a show that has a lot of novel weaponry in it you substitute Saw for Avengers.

I dunno... I read this and was annoyed at first, but I kind of see where the OP is coming from.

As an Elementary fan, I'm definitely over all the unnecessary backlash, but in any case, I kind of like the Holmes/XFiles comparison. You've got the medical doctor throwing their lot in with the reclusive, somewhat unbearable, unpopular genius, to form a kick ass partnership. I mean, the ultimate destination and eventual relationships are somewhat different, but I can see the premise as similar.
