This is why I avoid the forums and discussion threads and just look at the trope pages. I really don't have any interest in reading that crap that I am sure goes on in their forums.

This is exactly what I do too. When I hear about all this wank I am so glad I can say, "Wank? What wank? I only see tropes."

Trust me, that is the best possible decision you could make.

+4. Even though I have problems with the biases of people editing fandom-specific articles, I find the actual trope pages useful. I've seen enough on Encyclopedia Dramatica to avoid the forums.

I have never been to the forums and I really don't plan on starting. I do enjoy the tropes pages, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've found that the forums are OK as long as you stick to a select few threads. But that depends on how willing you are to go through all the awfulness to find those select few threads.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hate everything that site represents. I hope it crashes and burns.

+1

Also, anytime I see anyone using tropespeak, I kind of wince a little, and it makes it just a little bit harder for me to take them seriously.

Pretty much.

There are a lot of problems with the community, but without fail basically all their critics are equally as awful - and more interested in attacking them then reasonable critique.

The online community for the site (mods and admins included) killed a lot of my interest for the site, I'm sorry to say. I'll still go there to read pages sometimes but I've stopped editing. It's just way too frustrating and confusing to try to keep up with all the rule changes and the drama.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't ventured the forums much (... kind of not sorry reading all of this), but have any of the mods or admins ever tried to reign people back in? Or is it the sort of thing where they a, like the drama, or b, are pretty much MIA mods?

The TVTropes community is fucking godawful. I use the site solely for the trope pages. Never ever look at the forums.

As much as I love that site, I have to admit, it's crawling with creeps, idiots, and egotistical jerks.

Oh yeah, and delusional "writers" who don't actually know anything about writing compelling stories. I can count on my fingers the number of times that I've found useful writing advice in the TV Tropes forums.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It appears that consuming nothing but anime and religiously adhering to the idea that a good story is a set of rigidly-defined cartoon and video game cliches smashed together without the background to understand why they are unnecessary, how fiction actually works, and why you don't need to put RPG health mechanics in a fucking work of literature ends up stunting one's writing abilities.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who used to post on the forums for a while...good idea. Seriously, that place was fucking awful. It's even worse if you're female, because I swear every single girl who posted in the more chatty sections of the forum had a legion of creepy fanboys that would hit on her all the time...myself included, unfortunately.

I could only post there for about a year before I couldn't take it anymore. I was pretty much only there for the delicious wank caused by the It Just Bugs Me forum, and after that got removed all that was left was the creepy guys hitting on me, so I got the hell out of there. One of the best decisions I ever made I think, considering the site started spiraling downward even further after that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I like browsing the trope pages when I get bored, but the forums... Oh dear god the forums...
This guy's done dramatic readings of some of the shining examples of the TV Tropes forums community, if you feel like laughing and crying at the same time. (TW: everything)

They are also hugely biased in the trope sections themselves, at least in some cases. I noticed it with Wheel of Time. They are so negative about poor Rand, and while the ranting about Egwene and Elayne does reflect the fandom it is shocking that Cadsuane is only mentioned once in a bad light that I know of, and it claims that Egwene and Elayne are worse, and it gives her credit for Rand's revlation at the end of ToM. Which was done by Rand, alone, after being collared (by Semirhage, but Cadsuane kept the collar nearby Rand and failed in guarding it from her), going crazy because of that and some other things, than being so shaken by his behaviour that he goes to a mountain, thinks, and has his big revelation. Note that when he explains what happened, she denigrates it. Also, they seem unaware that Rand's issue is Dissasociative Identity Disorder, not schizophrenia.

...I am really not going to be able to read the end of this series without going back and rereading all the earlier ones, am I.

I'm still mad about them axing the Fetish Fuel pages, and the Troper Tales pages.

Wait... the elitists aren't making progress, as in the elitists on TV Tropes?

I know about some of the more creepy and horrible shit that the abomination that is TV Tropes' forums, discussions, Troper Tales, Fetish Fuel etc. etc. have produced, but I have not seen its own members "making autism jokes for the sake of making autism jokes".

Are you saying that one of the most unanimously autistic sites on the internet that isn't explicitly about autism is populated by elitist Social Darwinists who make autism jokes?

Anyway, I'm not sure what you expect, as I'm not sure TV Tropes can improve. It would have to cease to be TV Tropes, basically.

The problem is your trying to discuss why TV Tropes has issues....on TV Tropes. It's a losing battle. You wanna discuss it's issues? Come to LJ/DW or even Tumblr.

Just not TV Tropes.
