So I went to Books A Million today to use a gift card and quickly remembered why I didn't like BAM. No chairs to sit and read, a teeny hardback for 17$...their clearance items are very interesting, though.

How often do you frequent brick and mortar book stores,FS? If we had B&N, I'd be in one a lot more.

I go to Half Price Books every once in while, but I buy DVDs and VHS instead of books. I don't buy books too often because I'm really, really picky.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like browsing in bookshops, I like the atmosphere and that you can handle the merchandise, but the prices are usually around double what Amazon offers and I just can't justify that.

I don't think I've ever read more than a couple of pages in a shop though, that's always seemed slightly odd to me.

Not often. My downtown did just open a new independent bookstore that I'm going to check out, though. But the big places like Barnes & Noble and Books a Million (dude, I almost said Borders)...I don't even have one in my current town (or the one before it, or the town I grew up in or the city where I went to college) any more. There is one where my family lives, but it's expensive.

I do like to wander used book stores, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I try to limit myself because I have no space in my apartment for more books, and every time I go to a bookstore (usually one of a couple local used bookstores), I end up with a stack of new books.

I go to the library all the freaking time, though, it's great. And they usually have places to read. I also request books online to pick up from the library, but going in person to browse is an experience that I find enjoyable.

Fairly often, but that mayyy not count since my fiancé works in one?

I go to them fairly often just to poke around and look at books too, though. Often Black Bond Books, but there's an Indigo not far from where I work and I end up there sometimes.

There's a bookstore a couple blocks up from me, I go in just about any time I'm at the mall. And it's got a Starbucks so I can spend too much money on books and caffeine all in one place.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I started applying for a job there once, on their website (or something similar, but I'm pretty sure it was them).

The questions just started getting weirder and weirder and I had to stop.

There's a nice locally owned store an hour away from me, but I haven't been since my friend moved to a new location and I stopped working in that town. I go to the (crappy) B&N nearby when I just want to go out to a bookstore, but usually I want to save money so I order online.

I wish we had more bookstores around here.

The only things I remember about Books a Million are that they're all over Florida and they have a ton of Jesus stickers.

I prefer buying books in brick and mortar stores. There's something about seeing all those books in once place... and I always end up with at least twice the number of books I intended to buy. Browsing in actual stores is much easier than online, though I will turn to Amazon if I can't readily find it in person.

RIP Borders.

Hardly ever. The really good one around my area closed after B&N moved in a block away, and then the other bookstore in the nearby mall closed too. I've never forgiven B&N for that, so I don't go there.

Biased 'cause I work at B&N, but I also peruse BAM's clearance when I'm nearby. Those $2 and $3 racks are too tempting. Unfortunately our prices are a lot like theirs, at least as far as hardcovers and trade paperbacks go, but we do have more seating :D

I used to go to Barnes and Noble all the time, but the closest one I know how to get to is a couple hours away by bus (I can't drive), so now I rarely go.

I used to go all the time but then I realized the three library systems in my area pretty much cover everything I could want. So I stopped going and chill at libraries now.

Also, my local book store has now become my local nook store. And toys. And coffee. But they got rid of CDs for some reason. I don't have a nook so there's really nothing left for me there.

I like going to Chapters to browse, there's one not that far from me and they have neat items other than books. I agree with some other comment though. Amazon can be WAY cheaper.

Where I used to live there was a fairly big independent store as part of a mall, I thought that was pretty impressive that it even exists. And attached to a mall. Sadly I forget the name.

Not very often. And like you, I prefer B&N over BAM.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
There is a book exchange in my city that I stop by about once a week or so. I'm still on the lookout for independent shops (we haven't lived here long), but they're hard to find anywhere even when they exist. I don't shop at B&N or BAM because their prices are high and their selection isn't anywhere near as impressive as the size of the stores would lead someone to believe. I mostly buy books on Amazon because it costs so much less.

I used to go to Borders a TON before it closed down, but...yeah. It's gone now. Barns and Noble is OK, but a lot of the books I buy are manga, and their selection isn't as good as what Borders' was like. These days I honestly mostly just buy stuff off of Amazon.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I get most of my reading material from the library these days. The local library chain joined some sort of state consortium which gives me easy access to the catalogs of some 40+ libraries across the state without having to deal with any inter-library loan tedium.

I pretty much never buy anything from BAM unless it's on the clearance tables/racks, and I go in the store maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Most of the books I've bought recently have been clean, super nice but used copies. We've got a pretty awesome Goodwill Bookstore in my town that sells the bulk of its stuff, even like-new hardcovers, for $3-$5----that opening was a thrilling day. A whole Goodwill! Just for books! (And some CDs and movies.) The Salvation Army in town also has a decent sized book section, with most paperbacks 50 cents a pop, but the copies aren't generally in very nice condition. And then there's an independent store that sells new and used, but the prices are generally at least twice Goodwills so I'm pickier about what I get from there. I go physical book shopping about every other month and load up on a dozen or so books at a time.

For book shopping online, I generally turn to bookcloseouts.com or Amazon.

If the nearest decent UBS were a little closer, I'd be there a lot more often. Instead I usually settle for the local BAM and B&N stores. I don't go to either of them very often now that I have a Nook, though, except when I need a manga fix.

There isn't one nearby and I think I haven't been in one for months. I miss them, though I can't really afford to buy books right now.

Fortunately we have a great library system.

I don't go often anymore simply because I've used up most of my book space. I keep wanting to buy books then I look around and go, "But where are you going to put them?" I don't have a kindle or a nook and I don't particularly care for reading books on my phone, so...I'm out of luck.

And I don't care for BAM either, but that's usually where I end up going. :/ It tends to be easier to find what I want there, but...damn, they're expensive.

Like others, I miss Borders.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
There's a really good local bookstore here that I usually use for all my hard copy book purchases. I'm pretty poor lately, though, so I don't really get to go often and most of my recent purchases there have been gifts for friends and family members.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I go at least once a month to Barnes and Nobel with a friend. He usually buys stuff more than I do but I do like to look. I have gotten some cheap stuff in the sale section.

Back in my hometown there there's a store called Hastings. I think it's a decent sized chain so other people might know of it. Anyway I went back home a few months ago and found it was still there but now they also have used books. They were also having a sale when I was there so I ended up buying about $20 that amounted to 6 books at least 2 of them hardback. I was quite thrilled.

I also go to the comic book shop at least once a month and try not to spend too much.

Although I've never sat and read a book in the store so I can't say I feel for you there.

I haven't since switching entirely to e-readers. Both my partner and I have RA that just got diagnosed in the last couple years. What it's hit worst for both of us has been our hands. I can still read some types of physical books, if they are mass market paperbacks or lightweight hardbacks (as YA generally tends to be, so I still get a lot of reading material from my library) but my partner can't hold a physical book without a huge amount of pain.

Prior to switching we used to go probably a month or so, maybe more often if we had a good paycheck. This is going to change once the whole agency pricing settlement goes through and online vendors can actually offer discounts for ebooks but, we used to buy a lot more books when we were buying physical because of all the "buy three get one free" type deals. I don't see them as much in B&N but Borders had TONS AND TONS of sales like that.

If we HAD more in the city, I'd go more often. But after Border's went out, we lost most of our mall bookstores and main Border's store. Now there are LITERALLY 2 B&N in an hour driving distance.

:C

I MISS MY STORES.
