economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I was watching Doomsday Preppers and one of the kids on that show was convinced economic collapse was in our near future (in the USA). Got me to thinking, I actually would not mind if the country went down into a fucked spiral of economic collapse and crazytown. Mostly because lately I've been contemplating killing myself to get out from the mountain of debt I will have sitting on me for the rest of my life, and collapse would be like a fresh exciting start for me!

What about you? Do you think something like a total economic collapse is a real possibility where you live?

Yeah.

And fuck no I don't want it to happen. Many people would suffer. There'd be a great deal of violence and starvation. Wanting that would be pretty damn childish!

You will not win Thunderdome, anon.

Many people are suffering now. Lots of violence and starvation going on as is. We have very different ideas of what will happen. Nobody can say for sure.

I don't think it's childish. Selfish maybe. Unrealistic perhaps. But not childish.

Wishing apocalyptic scenarios on the world is very childish, stupid and shortsighted. Just because some people are suffering now doesn't mean all people should be suffering later.

I'm still not seeing the childish aspect? And all people wouldn't be suffering. And I do not equate economic collapse with "apocalyptic scenarios".

It's actually not stupid or shortsighted either as I've thought this out quite a bit but I see how you could assume that based only on the bit I wrote above, which was actually supposed to come off more tongue in cheek or sarcastic than I guess it did. Oh well!

The childish aspect is you putting yourself before others.

Re: economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I see that more as selfish than childish. I guess if you think the two mean the same then I can see what you are saying, but I see them as different terms.

It's childish because of the scale of situation itself. Selfishness could be small scale. Everyone is selfish at some point. Childishness is when that selfishness reflects "The world revolving around you" aspect.

Another childish aspect could be your attraction to seeing the economic system get torn down completely. Almost like toppling a tower of blocks.

Re: economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm but I think you're assuming a lot about my motivation and reactions. It is interesting how much people assume based on small amounts of data. No real assumption is necessarily wrong, but neither are they right. Fun!

I'm with chard. This ends with Tina Turner making an example of you to prove who runs Bartertown.

Economic collapse in my country s not something I worry about, we got enough oil money squirreled away to last us a while. We barely noticed the credit crunch to be honest.

Any of the superpowers running out of oil before us, and then deciding that we are a "tiny country who are kinda defenseless and we got oil in heaps" so we get attacked is a much more real possibility.

Which kinda scares me, but not too much, we're buddies with everyone, so I guess one superpower would protect us, then as thanks steal our oil...

But even if you don't care about whether you live and die, if the economy goes to shit, what will become of your wife? :(

Re: economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
My imaginary wife? She will live on, most likely retreating to the wilderness to live off the land. She's good with her imaginary hands so I imagine she'd be fine building her own badass log cabin in the woods. And she's a well rounded and talented lady so you know she's got all sorts of trapping, hunting, gathering, and planting skills. She'd probably take the imaginary chickens and our lone imaginary dairy cow with her when she goes, so she'd be set for food for at least a little while. Then maybe some time in the future she'd meet another nice imaginary person and fall in love all over again and together they'd raise a lot of imaginary children off in the wilderness.

I think it's a fun scenario to think about but I'm unsure how I'd realistically cope if it happened. Basically on par with zombies etc.

I sure hope not. I, my entire family and the rest of the physically/mentally disabled population would be screwed six ways to Sunday without access to modern medicine. A lot of people would die horribly if the economy collapsed. Why would you wish that on anyone?

Re: economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the US also and I think an economic collapse is inevitable, but it won't happen in the next 20 years. Probably with the next 25 though. The loss of skilled labor jobs combined with the necessary debt incurred by getting a useless piece of paper degree and the younger generations' inability to start in any industry (never mind compete) due to everything from inexperience to diminished capacity for responsibility, will definitely drive the economy further down than it already is.

Re: economic collapse

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well...Yes and no? The entire country, yes. The specific part I live in, no. The part I live in actually has never stopped hiring and has, mostly, recovered and been building our economy even stronger [and making economic ties with countries whose economies are, at the moment, growing]. So, while I can see the *country* collapsing, it's more likely that here, we'll end up having to change our government and that would be what causes chaos/panic for a while before things get back under control.
