I wouldn't expect this flop movie to know better than this

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hiddleston was the saving grace of that movie. Seriously.

Do you expect the flop comics to know better? Because they use the same turn of phrase.

Bye!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly the movie had so many problems story-wise this really isn't the thing that stood out to me the most...

And weren't they mostly referred to as Frost Giants?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Pluralization can change across languages, though. There are multiple instances of loanwords into English being given alternative plural forms. Jötuns has been an accepted plural in English since 1907.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's wrong since 1907. Congrats.

Offtopic, but too bad that despite they use Aesir a lot as a synonym of Asgardians in the comics, no one uses the singular form. I wish we could make constant DAT ASS jokes all the time.

Did they pronounce the J properly?

Were they speaking English?

Then 'jotuns' is completely correct. Just like 'ninjas', or 'cherubs' - or 'jotnar', 'ninja', or 'cherubim'. The thing about English and loanwords is it's completely acceptable to pluralize like the source language, or like English.

In fact, in some cases, it's more acceptable to go with the English than to try to pluralize it like the source language - you're less likely to end up with abominations like octopi, virii, or peni/penii - properly octopodes (octopus is from Greek, not Latin), viri (virus, not virius), and penes (penis, not penus nor penius). Octopusses, viruses, and penises are all also acceptable.

Especially relating to octopi. I hate the use of the word "octopi" so much, as a Latin student.

While I know it's technically correct, I hate the word "octopusses". Hmm, my computer thinks that's a misspelling. Let's try "octopuses" -- okay, it's good with that one. "Octopi"? Yeah, it's good with that, too. "Octopodes"? Nope, alas. I usually end up saying "more than one octopus".

Interesting how no one ever tries to pluralize "bus" as "bi". (Not that they should, since I believe "bus" comes from "omnibus" which is possibly plural and definitely something other than nominative but I can't remember what...)

loki_of_sassgaard: Harry Lockhart covering his eyes in frustration with "*Facepalm*" written over top. (This is exhausting)

[personal profile] loki_of_sassgaard 2012-11-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Except, it's canon. They've been doing it that way in the comics. Cry moar.

I don't mind when it see it either way in fic. It's a loanword at this point. Loanwords are conjugated by English standards; not in Old Norse or Icelandic, as the case may be.

What annoyed me even more was how they said the names. It's ok when an english speaking person says "Thor" like they did in the movies, but when even the character himself or all the other Aesir say it like that, regardless of the fact that they should know better since it's a nordic name, then to me it shows that again, people don't give a fuck about the source.

Not that it's a new problem, every time a name not from the english language or even used in that language is used in some movie/Tv show the just decide to speak it however they want, never mind that it's completely wrong. Where I'm from we say names not from our language how they are said in that language and not in our own. And don't even get me started on Latin, Harry Potter was painful because of that.

And now, thanks to you, some people who were perfectly happy to enjoy the movie in ignorance will probably be bugged by it too. Congratulations.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I... genuinely didn't know that. I'mma start using that from now on because GRAMMAR! :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to say that it's a weird thing to get annoyed by, but then I remembered I cringe at incorrect Elvish grammar in Tolkien fics, which I suppose is vastly more pathetic, so...

[identity profile] antialiasis.livejournal.com 2012-11-18 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm rather puzzled you're getting indignant over pluralizing a loanword according to English pluralization rules but not over them pronouncing loanwords according to English pronunciation rules or, way more importantly, the whole Laufey being male thing.

I mean, I'm Icelandic and find it kind of hilarious when they go BI-FROST, but Laufey is ten times more hilarious than that. "Jotuns" doesn't even register.

I don't think Marvel ever really gave two shits about sticking true to Norse mythology.

[personal profile] error_page 2012-11-18 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Why are you attempting to reinvent the dative case in modern English? Jötni/jötnum couldn't work because the grammar structure for them doesn't exist.

2. The singular nominative ending is often dropped in translation, so there's no need to differentiate between jötun/jötunn.

3. If you want to inflect nouns, you also have to inflect names. You'd just look silly if you started saying, “Thorr did X to Loka, so Loki did Y to Thor”.

4. English. Just, English. Jotun is a loanword, English will happen to it.

5. If you really want to correct peoples' Old Norse grammar, go around reminding them that Thor is an áss, not an Æsir. It's much more fun.
